3A D1 Reg I Finals: Stephenville 11-1 vs Lubbock Cooper 11-2

I expect to see more votes for Lubbock Cooper this week. Since Stephenville had a close call yesterday. ;)

I watched the 2nd half of Lubbock Cooper/Burnet game.

Short observation.

Cooper plays as a power run team. Line up in the spread some, and play action. Good sized OL. QB #15 is a hoss. He is a run threat and has a good arm in a passing situation. Inconsistant passing game though. They like to run up the middle a lot. They don't pass much. RB is good sized and has good speed. Defense looked stingy. Good sized DL, good LB's and avergae DB's. They run run run, then play action pass. I thought of their offense as a Texas panhandle version of Kilgore. ;)

Should be a good match up with Stephenville! Looking forward to it.

Side note: This match up is fitting. Why? Their baseball team knocked Stephenville out of the playoffs to go to state. Hopefully, it's payback time for the athletes that both played in that series. I know Stephenville has football players that play baseball and have a bad taste in their mouths. :flaming:

Stephenville will clean up the turnovers and beat a good lubbock cooper team. Kilgore will be the real test and hopefully they play that one in Mansfield again only 20 minutes away. Don't let the Big Spring game sway your opinion. This team can hang 50 on anyone.

I just talked to one of the ville coaches and it doesn't look good for moving game. Lubbock just played Sat and they feel it would be a disadvantage. I don't think the cold really bothers them.

I would seriously doubt that. Coach G does NOT like playing teams in non-district he may face in the playoffs. Sville does not have a very good record playing teams twice in the same season.

A very good assessment Sville! Seeing them play on Saturday I am in total agreement that their OL/DL play very physical. QB Keane is a hoss and a tough runner. RB Gruben is runs tall and has good speed. Defense can lay the wood. Very solid team and well coached. They play disciplined football.

yeah, they did the same thing 3 years ago when we beat them in the reg.1 final...the refs finally put a stop to it...it just depends on the crew..

I notices that too! They were almost on the hashes at some points in the game, multiple times.

Teams that want to have the best opportunity to beat teams like Stephenville, Graham, Burnet will try anything and everything to disrupt the fast tempo offense. Watch the Auburn/Alabama rerun... Bama tried some tactics that almost worked until that last second missed FG return for the game winning TD.

I was kinda thinking the same thing about Wylie's coaches last year in that Regional Finals game. Must have been the intensity that game brought on. It's easier to see the opposing sides coaches from the other side of the field.

I will admit we got away with some DPI and they got away with OPI as well. While the refs did not call many penalties that should of been called both ways they were consistent IMO in letting both teams play physical. For the record Sville had 7 penalties for 77 yds while BS had 5 for 35.

He was literally grabbed and held on every pass play. Saw his jersey pulled out 8-12" more times than I can count (course I can only count to 3 if you don't let me use my fingers... :p).

The only team I saw beat the snot out the jackets this year was Aledo.. Aledo would beat Carthage or La Grange worse..we saw the "paper Wildcat" that Whitehouse turned out to be...

First and foremost, we made it home safely. I-20 was smooth sailing until we got to Hwy 6. Black ice in several spots. Hope everyone else made home safe.

Secondly, congrats Stephenville on a solid win against a solid Cooper team. Conditions were miserable.

Thirdly, congrats to the Cooper Pirates on a great season! Very disciplined and well coached team. Gave it a championship effort. That D-line was nasty. Good luck to all the seniors. They all gave it their best.

Stephenville blasts past Lubbock Cooper

After three days of waiting, Stephenville and Lubbock Cooper were finally able to play their Class 3A Division I state quarterfinal at Shotwell Stadium.

Although it was a frigid 25 degrees at kickoff with a light rain coming down throughout the game, Stephenville (12-1) found a way to fight the elements and pull out a 42-28 victory.

With all the delays and unfavorable weather, it was going to be tough for everyone on the field.

“This one worried me, I’ll be honest with you,” said Stephenville coach Joseph Gillespie.

Stephenville junior quarterback Jarrett Stidham put an end to any worries Gillespie had, finishing 19-of-30 passing for 330 yards and a touchdown.

“We were focused and ready to go,” said Stidham.

On the second play of the game, Stidham pitched the ball to freshman running back Kaegun Williams for a 77-yard touchdown run.

Williams was equally effective, finishing with 157 yards on the ground and three scores while providing another 77 yards receiving on five receptions.

Lubbock Cooper (11-3) gave the Yellow Jackets all they could handle in the first quarter. The Pirates’ defense held Stephenville on its next three possession after the first touchdown. Between those stops, Cooper found the end zone on two touchdown runs to take a 14-7 lead, a 2-yard run by Stanton Keane and a 36-yard run by Jordan Salas.

That would be the last time Cooper saw the lead.

Stidham ran for two scores in the second quarter to spark 28 unanswered Yellow Jackets points.

Leading 21-14 at halftime, Stephenville came out in the second half and put the game away.

Williams’ 11-yard score and Stidham’s 46-yard touchdown pass to Ben Martin pushed the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 35-14 in the third quarter.

Stephenville will continue its pursuit toward a title repeat when it faces Kilgore (13-0) in the semifinals Saturday in Corsicana.
