Mustangs race to district

championship at Lamesa

LAMESA -- While Sweetwa-ter has consistently produced outstanding individual boys track athletes over the years, a the Mustangs hadn't won a district championship in the sport since 1996.

But that all changed when Coach Joe Paty's team put on a stunning, record-setting performance Thursday at Lamesa.

The Mustangs scored 157 points to run away with the District 3-3A title. Sweetwater finished with a 41-point edge over Snyder, which scored 116 points, while Merkel was third with 99.

Paty, who is retiring at the end of the school year after serving as Sweetwater's boys track coach since 1988, watched his team win eight of Thursday's 12 events including all three relays, and set five meet records.

Sweetwater's individual meet records were set by Josh Guzman in the shot put (57-6 1/2), Jon-Eric McDonald in the 400 dash (49.99) and Randyn Tenery in the 300-meter hurdles (39.70). Guzman's mark also set a new school record.

Tenery, Jeremy Thompson, Josh Jackson and Michael Williams ran on the 400-meter relay which had a meet-record time of 42.90 seconds; Mc-Donald, Thompson, Jackson and Williams were on the 800 relay which recorded a meet-record time of 1:30.04; and Williams, Bryson Oliver, Tene-ry and McDonald were on the 1600 relay which was timed in 3:28.08.
