Both quality schools. Seen them both. Should be a great game. I like seeing Cuero getting some of that "attitude" back in them. Big Green 61 mentioned it to me the other day as we traveled together to the EC/LG game, and I agreed with him. Back in the day, Cuero had opponents beat before they even took the field. The name of Cuero alone, was a big advantage. Cuero will have to make each back pay, on each snap of game. There will times you have no idea who has the ball. So, pound them all--over and over. Navarro will sneak in some passing though, to keep ya honest. They do run the slot-t very well. As I said, this will be a good one.

Gotta go with our fine feather friends to the south here, 38-35.

What the hell? You show all the signs of a pure adolescent. Could you please translate this part of your sentence..."By the way if u show this Cuero senior calls their freshman yr " because it has all the signs of being anal retrieved. If you have kept up the past several years you should know I've supported the Gobblers and always shared respect for their tradition and program. I also have friends that live there. Bottom line, I'm supporting a D-27 brother so get over it.

Cuero was much better last week at tackling and making their reads on defense. First half Columbus had 98 yards rushing 9 yards passing of the 98 rushing yards 61 came on one play where a wrong read was made Columbus got some yards and points late in the game when coach put in second string.

Back to topic, game I saw Cuero in like how they played the run and scheme in pass coverage. Like Cuero chance on stopping the run some but how's the offense since the Ingleside game? steady improvement or clicking at where they should be?

Our RB has gotten better every game big physical runner. The young RB's we have steadily been improving taking some pressure off of Hopkins. QB looked really Good Friday nite. If our D plays like they're capable it should be a great game.

Navarro 's play action passing game was what got wharton last year.
Usually Navarro will need 3-4 key third down conversions to maintain clock and drive control.
They also surprised with their " football pads " speed.
Not the blazing " track " speed that most brag about.
Call it deception or whatever but once their rb or rec got in open field, they were hard to catch.
I'm speaking of what I saw vs wharton last year.
Side note
Gonzales-Bellville first half was played in less than one hour.
This one also could go fast.

Just curious

How many variations of the slot t are there?

Is navarro's slot t identical to Bellville's?

Gonzales' effort vs the slot t might get their coaches on the spring and summer speaking tour.
Do district teams share during playoffs( cuero, GZ )

Just wondering

gobbla4life
11-20-2013, 07:02 PM
It's always easy to explain with the slot t , you have to tackle anyone who has the ball or may have the ball. That being said , misdirection offenses are very hard to key on , you must play assignment football or you will pay. In my opinion , if Cuero plays D like they are capable of they will be fine.

bag-o-chips
11-20-2013, 07:11 PM
Easier said than done esp. at the speed Navarro can run the slot. You get through tackling everybody it may be 10 -15 yards down the field. Watch the highligts against C Lake who runs the slot also. They should have had a clue to stopping it. Hard to replicate the speed hich it is run in practice if you have not played it much.

At times he will go uptempo esp. near half or if he sees that it is getting to the defense.

Most of the time it is all ball control and milking the clock. Not unsual for a 6 min. or so drive.

Could be the making of a great game bag ! We are a run first team as well , but we can pass well as well ! I think it will be a chess match , whoever can make the needed stops and not turn the ball over will be in good condition .

Watched some game tape of Navarro, their O line does a very good job of pulling and getting to their gaps creating a numbers mismatch at the point of attack. It will be imperative for the Gobbler D to make a correct read in an instant and react at top speed hitting everything that moves, the Goobler D will have to shed their blockers and seek out the ball carrier.

The weather may keep both teams from airing it out as much as they would like this could be tough for the team that has to play from behind.

Yessir your right nursery , controlled team speed is something we do have. Like you said , no one knows who's gonna win. Both are good teams , and the weather will be great for the running game , which both teams have. So it's gonna come down to , who makes the right adjustments. Safe travels to all , and an injury free game for both these teams.

All it takes is the right combination of players. They have the coaching staff and a system in place. This program is on the rise and trust me...they can easily be the newer version of Liberty Hill but that is not what they want. They are the Navarro Panthers. Okay bag-o-chips, you can correct me if I've stepped over my boundary here.

Honestly we are still building. To tell the truth we only had 2 returning starters on offense this year. Never did I say we were Liberty Hill although our Coach was there with Vance at one time. Tejas is right we our Navarro and this was actually a rebuilding year for us. Not many Slot teams can also drop out a shotgun and trips but it has been effective this year. I guess we really may be outmatched according to some on here but we will still show up. Best of luck to both teams and safe travels to all involved. Win or lose we will be proud of our team and know that in the 4 years sice we have moved from 2A to 3A this will be our 10th playoff game. Not bad for the new kid on the block!

Navarro facing tradition-rich Cuero

SAN ANTONIO — The Navarro Panthers (10-1) will try to extend their season for at least one more week when they face the Cuero Gobblers (7-3) Friday night at San Antonio’s Gustafson Stadium.
The second-round playoff game is the first-ever meeting between Navarro and traditional power Cuero. The Gobblers have been to the state finals 10 times in their history, which is the second most in the state. They have won three state championships.
Navarro head coach Les Goad, whose teams at the school have gone 62-20 and qualified for the playoffs in six consecutive seasons, said Cuero is what his program aspires to be.
“Their tradition motivates them,” he said. “And it gets their community behind them and they feed off it. But it is also motivation for us because we want to reach a higher level like that.”
Cuero opened its playoff run last week with a dominating 42-21 rout of Columbus. The Gobblers led that game 35-0 going into the fourth quarter and rolled up more than 400 yards of offense.
They are led by running back D’Anthony Hopkins, who has rushed for 20 touchdowns and more than 1,500 yards this season. Hopkins, who is listed at 6-3 and 220, ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns against Columbus.
Goad calls the junior “a great running back in the mold of ones Cuero has had in the past.”
“He is big and strong and he can really run,” Goad said. “The majority of their plays go through him. They run deep tosses and leads and counters out of the shotgun for him.
“They also use him in the wildcat and he has thrown a few passes from that formation.”
Goad says Cuero is “a very physical team” that will have a decided size advantage over his Panthers. He said the Gobblers have good speed with “two or three guys with an extra gear” that Navarro will have to contain.
Defensively, Goad believes the Gobblers are strong at all positions, but especially along the line. Their base is a split but they will move their front around, according to Goad.
The Panthers also give opposing coaches plenty to worry about. They have outscored their last two opponents by a combined 123-20 margin. For the season, Navarro is averaging more than 42 points and 439 yards per game.
Cuero coach Travis Reeve, whose father Mark served as defensive coordinator at Texas Lutheran in 2010 and 2011, is impressed with what he has seen of Navarro.
“They are an excellent, well-coached football team,” he said. “They do a great job running their Slot-T offense and they’re really good on defense. They’ll be a really good challenge for us.”
One concern for the Panthers is their struggles on extra point kicks. Navarro has used three different kickers and is just 36 of 51 on PAT kicks this year, including three misses in last week’s win over Sam Houston.
Since the start of the 2011 season, the Panthers are 0-5 in games determined by two points or less or in overtime. They have missed at least one extra point kick in each of those losses.
Goad knows that as the playoffs continue and games likely get closer, those kicks can make a big difference.
“It is the most frustrating phase of our game,” he said. “I wish we had an answer, but it still is not solved.”
Goad said the team is mostly healthy. Tight end and middle linebacker Justin Harless will return after a bone chip in his elbow kept him out of last week’s game. Goad is concerned about one of his defensive leaders, linebacker Ty Wright, whom he says is “day to day” with a twisted knee.
Tonight’s kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
PANTHER NOTES: Navarro fans will sit on the home side at Gustafson Stadium.
Navarro receiver Desmond Smith was named a “Top Performer” by the San Antonio Express-News for his six catches, 135 yards, and four touchdowns against Sam Houston last week. Quarterback Ty Durham was named honorable mention on that list for tossing those four touchdowns to Smith while completing 8 of 10 passes for 159 yards.
The winner of this game will meet the winner between Sinton and Zapata. Those teams meet Friday night in Corpus Christi.

"Goad says Cuero is “a very physical team” that will have a decided size advantage over his Panthers."

I don't know if this is true or coachspeak. This year's Cuero version is probably one of the smallest (on average) teams it has fielded in years. I don't think Cuero has had a size advantage in any game played this year.

... I guess we really may be outmatched according to some on here but we will still show up. ...!

This is at least your third reference in this thread alone that insinuates a perceived lack of respect for Navarro. As a Cuero fan and member of this forum, I don't see or hear evidence of what you perceive. At the time of this posting, the poll results on who will win are evenly split at 19-19 and I don't see anything in the threads that support your stance.

Are you trying to play the lack of respect card as a motivational tool for your team or do you simply - as your name implies :D - have a chip on your shoulder?

Cuero respects all opponents , no different this week with Navarro. If these two teams weren't any good they wouldn't still be playing. Bottom line is it's not about the opponent , it's about taking one game at a time. GO GOBBLERS

Saw LH in those days too. Navarro is very similar to LH in the perfection of running the slot-T and very well coached in the believing of the system just like LH. Only difference is Navarro throws 20% of the time out of it and keeps the defense very honest. I only remember LH throwing it 1 or 2 times a game or never.

I have watched them close for the last four years, in 10 we played them in district and then regional final, beat them again 11 and 12, but they were good each of those years and this year they beat us 24-10. What I notice about them and good slot T teams is their guards and tackles are more the size of normal fullbacks and pull and are quick and strong for their size (good for Slot- T systems) What impressed me the most this year though is how they completely stopped our run. I know ya'll have a good RB but their run D was very good. Good luck, if it stops raining tonight I would throw on them. JMO.

Panthers’ furious rally comes up short

SAN ANTONIO — Temperatures were low and points were high Friday night as the Navarro Panthers (10-2) saw their season end with a 51-44 loss to the Cuero Gobblers (8-3) in a second round Class 3A, Division II playoff contest.

The Panthers fell primarily because they had no answer for the Gobblers’ offense, especially running back D’Anthony Hopkins. Operating much of the game out of the wildcat formation, Hopkins ran for 171 yards on 22 carries, with three rushing touchdowns and one touchdown on a kickoff return.

That helped Cuero put more points on the board than the Panthers have allowed any opponent to score since they moved up to Class 3A in 2010.

But Navarro’s offense kept them in the game by racking up 527 total yards. Sophomore fullback Anthony Grant led the way with a career-high four rushing touchdowns.

After the Gobblers took a 51-28 lead with 7:35 left in the game, the Panthers staged a furious rally. A late onside kick recovery gave them the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead. But they were stopped on that drive, ending hopes of continuing their playoff run.

Navarro head coach Les Goad, who is averaging nearly nine wins a season in his seven years at the school, said the comeback showed his team’s great character.

“We had some shoot-ourselves-in-the-foot kind of plays earlier in the game that put us in a hole,” he said. “But I’m proud of how they fought back and were just a play or two away at the end.”

He especially credited his seniors.

“I’ve been coaching 32 years and been a head coach for 17 years and I’m not sure I’ve ever had a better senior leadership group than this,” he said.

The Panthers got the game’s first break when linebacker Desmond Smith recovered a Cuero fumble at the Navarro 19-yard line. But the Panthers could not move the ball from there and a short punt gave the ball back to the Gobblers at the Navarro 38-yard line.

Cuero scored three plays later when quarterback Jared Vernor hit receiver Brenden Pupi on a third-and-9 for a 37-yard touchdown pass. That was the first of six consecutive possessions on which the Gobblers would find the end zone.

But the Panther offense got hot as well. Navarro answered that score with a touchdown drive, which was keyed by a 38-yard completion from quarterback Ty Durham to receiver Desmond Smith. Grant put them on the board with a 4-yard run and Conner Roe’s extra point tied the game up.

Following Cuero’s next touchdown, the Panthers again put together an impressive drive, marching 63 yards in seven plays. Durham got the score this time with an 11-yard sneak with less than five minutes left in the first half.

In what Goad would later say was “huge,” the Gobblers managed to match that score with just 39 seconds remaining to take a 21-14 lead into the locker room.

Part of the problem for Navarro’s defense is they could not get off the field. In the first half, the Gobblers were 5-for-5 on third down conversions.

Cuero extended that lead to two touchdowns on its first drive of the third quarter.

The Panthers responded when running back Jay Leal, who led his team with 125 yards on 16 carries, broke loose for a 46-yard touchdown run.

But the extra point attempt would prove disastrous for the Panthers. The snap on the kick was fumbled and recovered by Cuero’s Colby Ebrom, who returned it to the Navarro end zone for a safety.

That kept the Gobblers up by two scores and killed the Panthers’ chances to establish momentum at that point.

The Panthers had Cuero in a third-and-16 at the Navarro 32 on their ensuing possession. But Vernor completed a touchdown pass on that down as he was being hit, building the Panthers’ deficit to 37-20.

Grant answered for the Panthers with a 13-yard scoring run on the last play of the third quarter. A run by Leal added the two-point conversion.

Navarro then attempted an onside kick that unluckily bounced right to Hopkins, who returned it 49 yards for a quick Cuero score.

After the Panthers coughed up the ball on their next series and the Gobblers’ added another score to take a 51-28 lead, the outcome of the game appeared certain.

But Navarro thought otherwise. The Panthers quickly moved down the field to set up another touchdown run by Grant, this time from 14 yards out with just under five minutes left in the game. Durham then hit running back Luke Jaroszewski for the two-point conversion.

The ensuing onside kick failed but the Panther defense was finally able to stop Cuero on its next possession when they stuffed a fourth-down run at the Navarro 23.

That gave the Panthers the ball with 3:04 left and two timeouts. A sack and two incomplete passes put them in a hole, however, as they faced a fourth-and-16 at their own 17-yard line.

That is when Goad decided to listen to senior tight end Justin Harless and dust off a play they had not used.

“He said ‘Coach, we need to run the tight end screen here,’” Goad said. “I hesitated because of how many yards we needed to get. But he talked me into it and he made a great play.”

Harless took the screen for 75 yards to the Cuero 8-yard line. Two plays later, Grant crossed the goal line again with a 4-yard run. And when Grant added the two-point conversion to reduce the Gobbler lead to seven points, the victory celebration for Cuero was abruptly placed on hold.

Things would get even more interesting moments later when the Panthers recovered an onside kick at the Cuero 44-yard line. They took over with one timeout and 1:50 remaining.

But they could not complete the miracle. An incomplete pass, a 6-yard completion, and a run for no yards left them with a fourth-and-5. Grant’s run on that down netted just 4 of the 5 yards needed. The clock then ran out as Cuero took a knee on its last three plays.

The Panthers will again be left to ponder the what-ifs. They scored the most points they have ever scored in a loss. They also managed to gain 314 yards on the ground and 213 in the air, which was significantly more than Cuero’s 397 total yards.

But a handful of plays earlier in the game proved to be a little more than they were able to overcome.

The game completes a season in which the Panthers reached the playoffs for the sixth time in a row and won 10 games for the fourth time in school history.
