LM mainly running the ball. Jones is starting to run all over Kashmere.

They have completed a few passes. A big one on 4th down for a TD to Hardeman.

End 3rd, LM up 30-7.

HOUSTON — It’s not every game you win by 43 points that the coach calls the performance sloppy.

Led by quarterback Ladarrian Ellis-Jones’ three touchdown passes and running back Daquan Jones’ two touchdown runs, the Cougars opened the Division II-3A playoffs Thursday with a 50-7 victory over Kashmere at Barnett Stadium in Houston.

Despite the win, La Marque coach Mike Jackson knows his team can do better.

“We knew it would be taxing to get up (for this game), no matter how much you preach about it,” Jackson said after his team dominated the overmatched Rams. “We were sloppy.”

His junior quarterback agreed.

“We came out a little shaky,” said Ellis-Jones, who was 8 of 13 passing for 110 yards with three scores and an interception. “The (offensive) line did its job, and we got going.”

The Cougars had two lost fumbles, an interception, nine penalties, and a turnover-on-downs 1 yard away from the end zone. The defense also gave up several third and long plays that allowed Kashmere to extend drives that should have been three-and-outs.

Down the stretch as La Marque pulled away, Ellis-Jones completed four consecutive passes, three of which went for touchdowns.

Mike Hardeman had two of those catches, each with a bit of flair. The first came late in the third quarter as he was well covered but used his height advantage and jumped to snag the catch over his shoulder for the 10-yard score.

On the next touchdown in the fourth quarter, the ball was tipped by the defender and appeared to about to become an interception when Hardeman reached over and grabbed it before scoring on the 28-yard reception.

Dailon Richard got into the scoring action going uncovered for a 19-yard scoring drive for six points.

As “sloppy” as the game may have been in the mind of the coaches and players, there were plenty of other highlights, and the Cougars scored seven touchdowns.

Jones had 25 carries for 232 yards and two scores — a run of 8 yards in the first quarter and 20 yards in the second quarter.

The other scores came from Alan Cooper, who had a 5-yard scoring run in the first quarter, and Dalvion Grismore, with a 14-yard scoring run to close out the game in the fourth quarter.

The defense also got into the action forcing a Kashmere safety in the first quarter and grabbing four interceptions. Reggie Franklin, Tommy Young, Chason Douglas and Daitron Cole each had picks for the Cougars. Three of the interceptions led to scoring drives for La Marque.

Up next for La Marque is the winner of today’s Coldspring vs. Orangefield contest. In the third game of the season La Marque was nipped by Coldspring, 24-22.

Ellis-Jones didn’t hesitate when asked whom he’d rather face in the next round of the playoffs.

“Coldspring,” he said. “We want Coldspring to give them what they gave us.”
