Class 3A

Stafford at La Marque

7:30 p.m. today, Etheredge Stadium

LA MARQUE — The District 24-3A title will be up for grabs when the Cougars host the Spartans tonight.

Stafford comes into the game sporting an 8-0 overall record and 3-0 mark in district play, while La Marque is sitting at 6-3 and 3-0.

Though the two teams are both undefeated in league action, the Spartans have had much closer games. Stafford took out Columbia, 34-27, and nipped Sweeny, 50-49, before blowing out KIPP Sunnyside, 50-7.

Meanwhile, La Marque took out the same opponents by 31-0, 17-10 and 58-0 counts.

Stafford’s offense is a stout one and averages 362 yards per game.

The Spartans have trotted out two quarterbacks this season, with Sampson Bankole getting the bulk of the work. He’s thrown for 645 yards and seven touchdowns while rushing for 395 yards and eight scores. Kyle Thompson has thrown for 486 yards and seven TDs.

Stafford’s rushing game has been spread around over multiple carriers, but Adrian Seales has been the go-to guy. He’s rushed for 735 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The Spartans’ defense has been especially good at smelling out the football. It has recorded 13 interceptions, with Wesley Huff snaring four on his own.

La Marque comes into the game on a roll, having pitched shutouts in two of its last three games.

Last week, the Cougars’ 31-0 smacking of Columbia saw running back Daquan Jones come into his own, gaining 103 yards on 11 totes and scoring a pair of touchdowns.

After some growing pains early this season, quarterback Ladarrian Ellis-Jones has steadily grown into the position. Last week, he was nearly mistake-free, completing seven of nine passes for 94 yards, while rushing for 58 yards and a touchdown.
