SWEENY — The Sweeny Bulldogs need to come away from tonight’s game with either a win or a loss by less than eight points to guarantee a playoff appearance.

The situation is far simply for their opponent, the KIPP Sunnyside Senators, who need to win to keep their season going.

The Bulldogs face the Senators at Bulldog Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Sweeny comes in after beating KIPP Houston in a nondistrict blowout game that featured Dorland Fields with a five-touchdown performance. The Bulldogs are 1-2 in District 24-3A and in third place in a district that will see only one team left out of the playoffs. Columbia is 1-3 and Sunnyside 0-3.

Sweeny coach Paul Kilby has stressed the importance of the game to his players.

“We need to win,” he said. “We said, ‘Don’t let this be the your last week of practice’ for Tuesday practice. On Wednesday we said, ‘Don’t let this be your last practice.’ We have a good team and we just wanted to create that desire.”

The Bulldogs have relied all season on Fields to power its offense. The senior running back last week showed his ability by rushing for 190 yards on 14 carries and stretching his district-leading touchdown total to 25.

“He has had an outstanding season this year,” Kilby said. “He has been right around 1,700 yards on the season, and if we make the playoffs, he could very well make it over 2,000 yards rushing.”

“There is no one thing about him. His athleticism, his drive, his desire, he is just a great player all-around.”

When Fields needs a rest, the dropoff isn’t much with Anthany Simmons, who has 133 carries for 1,065 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Despite the Senators not having a win in district play, the Bulldogs are not overlooking them.

“I think they are pretty dangerous,” Kilby said. “No. 1 (Willie Gabriel) is outstanding on defense and we have to watch for their quarterback as well.”

Sunnyside’s David Lopez has been one of the bright spots on offense. He ranks third in the district with 696 passing yards. His two favorite playmakers are Lawrence Mallet (36 catches, 365 yards, five TDs) and Crayg Smith (16 catches, 216 yards, two TDs).

Gabriel is the team leader on defense and can play at several positions.

The Bulldogs also can’t let up on special teams, with Smith having returned both a kick and a punt for touchdowns.
