I never could find any stats on the Sinton / Oso game.

Let's hope for an injury free game on both sides if the ball.

ROBSTOWN — Robstown’s last shot at making the playoffs quickly turned into a show of force by Sinton.

Behind quarterback Tyler Handson, the Pirates (8-2, 4-1 in District 30-3A) compiled 377 yards of total offense on their way to a 34-8 win Friday at Cotton Picker Stadium.

Handson didn’t need much time to show why he is the Coastal Bend’s leader in total offense.

Handson left the game in the first half because of hurt ankle, but managed 108 rushing yards on eight carries. He scored once on the ground and once through the air.

The injury was described as minor by Sinton coach Tom Allen. With the Pirates, who tied for a share of the District 30-3A championship, playing in the postseason next week, pulling him from the game seemed like the right move.

“We’re playing next week and we need to be as healthy as we can be,” Allen said. “You can’t prevent injuries, because this is a contact sport.

“It was a little ankle (injury). It was enough of a wake-up call to get him hanging out with us on the sideline. He’s a really good football player and a difference-maker for us. We certainly need him healthy in the playoffs.”

The Cotton Pickers (3-6, 1-4 district) came into the district finale needing a win to try and sneak in the postseason. However, Sinton wasted little time setting the tone of the night.

Handson softened up the Robstown defense with four straight carries for 25 yards and then delivered a strike to Nick Zepeda for a 23-yard touchdown pass with the Pirates’ first possession.

Handson scored again in the next series, this time by slicing through defenders and outrunning the Robstown defense for a 62-yard touchdown run with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

The Pirates didn’t miss a beat with Colton Cohea in for Handson. The tall and lanky sophomore capped off a seven-play Sinton drive with a 32-yard sprint down the sideline for a score in the second quarter.

Sinton did provide Robstown with a couple of opportunities in the first half, but the Cotton Pickers failed to capitalize on the two turnovers.

“Sinton is one of those teams that you aspire to be like,” Robstown coach Enrique Gonzalez said. “I think they’re one of the top three programs in South Texas. What can you say? They’re fantastic.”

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Cotton Pickers, who missed the playoffs by just one win.

“I told our seniors that they’re the ones that got the ball rolling for us this year,” Gonzalez said. “We weren’t good enough to get there this year, but it’s because of them that we will in the next few years.”
