SWEENY — In a wild game filled with excitement from beginning to end, the Stafford Spartans escaped from Bulldog Stadium with a 50-49 overtime victory over Sweeny in District 24-3A action Friday night.

Stafford was up 50-43 when the Bulldogs (1-2, 5-3) got their second possession of overtime. Running back Dorland Fields scored on a 10-yard run to put Sweeny within a point.

But a bobbled snap forced Sweeny into a fire drill on the extra point, and a pass on the attempt failed, handing the Spartans a one-point win.

There was a bit of controversy on the Spartans’ second offensive possession of overtime, in which they scored on a 2-yard Adrian Seales run. Stafford benefited from a pass interference call on the previous play, but instead of placing the ball at the 10-yard line — which was 15 yards from the 25-yard line where the play started — it was placed at the 2-yard line. Stafford ran the play and Seales scored.

Sweeny had the ball first in the overtime period. Dorland Fields, who finished with 204 rushing yards, finished off the Bulldogs’ first possession with a 4-yard touchdown run. The extra-point kick was blocked originally, but an offside penalty gave Sweeny another chance. This time, the Bulldogs went for two points and got them on a run from Fields to go up 43-35.

Stafford was beset by penalties on its first offensive possession, but on a third-down play, Brian Imarenezor scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Thompson. On the two-point conversion, Imarenezor fumbled but picked the ball up and ran into the end zone to tie the game again, 43-43.

The Bulldogs needed a big comeback in the second half to force the extra session. Down 28-14 with 8:22 left in the third quarter, Sweeny started to rally.

It started when Sweeny defensive back Derek Davis intercepted a Stafford pass at the Bulldog 26 to stop a Spartan drive. One play later, Fields scored on a 74-yard run with 5:14 left in the third quarter to leave Sweeny down, 28-21.

With 11:04 left in the fourth quarter, Sweeny linebacker Zedrik White stepped in front of an attempted Spartan screen pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 28.

The Spartans didn’t quit. They marched 59 yards to regain the lead when Wesley Huff caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Thompson with 8:19 left in the fourth quarter to put Stafford up 35-28.

Sweeny bounced back to tie the game, 35-35, with a 63-yard drive. Cody Erikson finished off the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:03 left in the game to tie things up again.

In the first half, Stafford took a 14-0 lead. A pair of Sweeny turnovers led to Stafford scoring drives.

Taylor Robertson scored on a 1-yard run and an 19-yard run to leave Sweeny only 21-14 at the half
