Columbia crushes KIPP, closes in on playoff berth

By BUTCH McREYNOLDS sports@thefacts.com | Posted: Saturday, October 26, 2013 2:00 am

WEST COLUMBIA — Bullish sophomore running back Dakarius Bell stiff-armed his way to a game-high 190 yards on 19 carries, while dancing across the goal line three times as Columbia got a huge step closer to a playoff berth with a crunching 57-14 victory over visiting KIPP Sunnyside Friday night.

Bell, who had touchdown gallops of 14, 44 and 24 yards, was joined by teammate Lamarquis Fields as the Roughneck infantry scooted to the finish line with 454 yards rushing on the night.

Fields closed out the night with 115 yards on seven carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter as Columbia mounted a 22-0 lead, then stretched it to 36-7 at the intermission.

Columbia (1-2, 3-5) played brilliantly on defense during the entire night, with its only two hiccups coming on long passing plays by the Senators.

KIPP (0-2, 3-5) could not do anything on the ground against the Roughnecks, finishing with only 34 rushing yards on the night.

KIPP did manage 162 yards through the airways, thanks to big-play touchdowns in each half. In the first half, quarterback David Lopez launched a deep pass to 6-5 wide receiver Lawrence Mallet, who managed to out-jump the smaller ’Neck defender and then romp down the sidelines to complete a 47-yard touchdown with less than four minutes remaining in the half.

The only other bright spot for the Senators came with 1:12 remaining in the contest when Lopez unloaded an 84-yard pass to teammate Jared Johnson against the Roughneck reserves.

While those two plays accounted for the bulk of KIPP’s yardage, the Roughnecks spread the wealth as Bell and Fields both ran wild and were helped along by Broderick Thomas’ 48-yards rushing and Eugene Sims’ 36 yards, which included the final Columbia score of the night on a 12-yard run straight up the Senators’ gut.

Luis Paniagua also did some damage off the Roughneck bench, with runs of 32 and 5 yards, to help set up the final score.
Fields not only glowed on the offensive side, but he came up with an interception while playing defense.

Columbia took the opening kickoff and swept 92 yards on 11 plays as junior quarterback Jarius Kesee culminated the drive by punching it home from a yard out and the Roughnecks led 7-0 after kicker Jacob Comer started his perfect night with a kick between the uprights.

Bell came back moments later and bulldozed his way home from 14 yards out. Then Fields pulled off his sparkling 48-yard scoring run to complete the first-quarter scoring.

Kesee, who had two sure touchdown passes dropped in the game, connected on a 23-yard scoring toss in the second quarter to Jarron Freeman as Columbia stretched its lead to 29-0.

A 4-yard scoring romp by Thomas finished out the first-half scoring.

Bell continued to whip through the Senator defense by zipping 44 yards on Columbia’s first offensive play in the second half.
Moments later, Bell might have pulled off his finest run of the year, a highlight-reel moment when he wiggled past a couple of would-be tacklers, stiff-armed another, then leap-frogged another en route to a mouth-dropping 24-yard touchdown trot to make it 50-7 in the third quarter. Bell’s final dagger of the night came with 5:20 left in the third quarter.

Columbia wraps up the regular season by hosting La Marque next Friday night.

Never expected us to finish in fourth place.

Not the way I wanted to get in, but I'll take it.

These young guys will get at least an extra week of practice and experience a playoff game.
