Sweeny's defense has improved the last two weeks. I think that will be the difference. Stafford hasn't played a strong schedule at all. It will show IMO.

SWEENY — After a 34-21 win against rival Columbia, the Sweeny Bulldogs will not get any rest this week as they take on a tough Stafford team that has yet to lose this season.

The Bulldogs (1-1, 5-2) are still in the hunt for the District 24-3A title but need to keep the momentum going after beating arch-rival Columbia last week. This week’s game is homecoming at Bulldog Stadium, and festivities will precede the 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday.

Stafford (1-0, 6-0) is coming off a bye week and will present quite a few problems for the Bulldogs.

Sweeny played exceptionally well last week against Columbia.

“We sure did,” Sweeny coach Paul Kilby said. “I give full credit to Columbia. They played great, and I’m very proud of our boys for stepping up.”

Offensively, Sweeny is led by talented running backs Dorland Fields, who now leads the district with 156 carries for 1,270 yards and 17 touchdowns, and Anthany Simmons (105-878 yards, 11TDs), who is third overall in district.

Fields is coming off a great performance against Columbia where he rushed for 250 yards, but this week will be facing the top defense in the district.

The Spartan defense is limiting opponents to 135.7 yards per game and also has grabbed a league-best 10 interceptions. Wesley Huff leads the team with three interceptions, while Christian Jordan and Jerick Pitre both have two.

“They are very good,” Kilby said. “I think they have only allowed 61 points this season. Offensively we just have to run good fakes and execute properly.”

That is Kilby talking about his slot-T offense, which is creating 424 yards of offense a game.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kilby said their game against Columbia will help them this week against Stafford.

“Very similar to our game plan to last week; we had to stop Dakarius Bell,” he said. “This week we will turn our attention to No. 5 (Adrian Seales).”

Seales has rushed for 734 yards on 76 carries for a 9.66 per carry average. He’s also scored 14 times. His effectiveness is helped by dual-threat senior quarterback Samson Bankhole, who has 478 yards and six touchdowns passing and 315 yards rushing this season.

Sweeny’s defense, ranked fourth in district with 331.9 yards, will have its hands full with Seales and Bankhole.

“The main keys of the game for us is having ball security, tackling No. 5 and slowing down the rest of the team,” Kilby said.

Sweeny and Stafford are meeting for the 21st time, with the Bulldogs holding a 16-4 series advantage. One of those wins by the Spartans came last year, though, a 41-22 decision that broke a five-game losing to the Bulldogs.

Sweeny drops overtime heartbreaker
Failed extra-point try hands Stafford thrilling 50-49 win.

SWEENY — In a wild game filled with excitement from beginning to end, the Stafford Spartans escaped from Bulldog Stadium with a 50-49 overtime victory over Sweeny in District 24-3A action Friday night.

Stafford was up 50-43 when the Bulldogs (1-2, 5-3) got their second possession of overtime. Running back Dorland Fields scored on a 10-yard run to put Sweeny within a point.

But a bobbled snap forced Sweeny into a fire drill on the extra point, and a pass on the attempt failed, handing the Spartans a one-point win.

There was a bit of controversy on the Spartans’ second offensive possession of overtime, in which they scored on a 2-yard Adrian Seales run. Stafford benefited from a pass interference call on the previous play, but instead of placing the ball at the 10-yard line — which was 15 yards from the 25-yard line where the play started — it was placed at the 2-yard line. Stafford ran the play and Seales scored.

Sweeny had the ball first in the overtime period. Dorland Fields, who finished with 204 rushing yards, finished off the Bulldogs’ first possession with a 4-yard touchdown run. The extra-point kick was blocked originally, but an offside penalty gave Sweeny another chance. This time, the Bulldogs went for two points and got them on a run from Fields to go up 43-35.

Stafford was beset by penalties on its first offensive possession, but on a third-down play, Brian Imarenezor scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Thompson. On the two-point conversion, Imarenezor fumbled but picked the ball up and ran into the end zone to tie the game again, 43-43.

The Bulldogs needed a big comeback in the second half to force the extra session. Down 28-14 with 8:22 left in the third quarter, Sweeny started to rally.

It started when Sweeny defensive back Derek Davis intercepted a Stafford pass at the Bulldog 26 to stop a Spartan drive. One play later, Fields scored on a 74-yard run with 5:14 left in the third quarter to leave Sweeny down, 28-21.

With 11:04 left in the fourth quarter, Sweeny linebacker Zedrik White stepped in front of an attempted Spartan screen pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 28.

The Spartans didn’t quit. They marched 59 yards to regain the lead when Wesley Huff caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Thompson with 8:19 left in the fourth quarter to put Stafford up 35-28.

Sweeny bounced back to tie the game, 35-35, with a 63-yard drive. Cody Erikson finished off the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:03 left in the game to tie things up again.

In the first half, Stafford took a 14-0 lead. A pair of Sweeny turnovers led to Stafford scoring drives.

Taylor Robertson scored on a 1-yard run and an 19-yard run to leave Sweeny only 21-14 at the half.

3 fumbled snaps 2 of which we lost and some highly questionable penalties. Yet we still could have won the game. 3rd and goal in the 1st overtime (I believe); Stafford fumbles the hand off and the backup running back scoops it up among several Bulldog defenders and dashes to the end zone from about 8 yards out and later converted a 2pt conversion to tie the game. Sweeny had an eight point lead at the time.

Was the PI in the end zone or does that matter?

I don't think it matters. In hs and college it's a 15 yard penalty, right? Only nfl has the spot foul thing if I'm not mistaken

It was in the EZ. But the ball was thrown 5 yards out of the back of the EZ.

According to NCAA rules, if the line of scrimmage was outside the 17 yard line, it's a 15 yard penalty. If inside the 17, it's placed at the 2. If your LOS was the 25, the refs blew it if they didn't place it at the 10.
