ANGLETON — On a night when defense was an ugly word, Brazosport Christian battled from behind to take a nail-biting, 103-97 victory over stubborn Magnolia Legacy to keep its unbeaten record intact in a TAPPS 1, District 5 barnburner.

And for the third time this season, the Eagles (3-0, 7-0) broke their own scoring mark in a game with their 103 points. Earlier this season, BCS beat Bellville Faith (102-59) and Orange Community Christian (101-78).

With senior quarterback Dalton Stickley spearing the visiting Lions with five touchdown runs along with eight touchdown passes to fellow senior Nathan Alexander, it still would not have been enough if the high-octane pair had not come up with a pair of crucial interceptions in the fourth quarter.

Stickley, who also recovered a fumble in the wild first quarter, stepped in and made a beautiful interception late in the game to set up the winning score, while Alexander swiped a pass near his own end zone in the final two minutes to give the ball back to the Eagles.

Trailing 97-95 after Legacy had scored a go-ahead touchdown with 3:47 remaining in the shootout, Stickley marched his revved-up team down the field on exactly one play, a 47-yard catch and run to Alexander with 3:23 remaining.

As they had all night long, the Lions countered but for some reason went away from their powerful running game, electing to pass the ball on the BCS 15-yard line. That is when an exhausted Alexander swept to the middle of the field and made the biggest take away of the contest.

It still took some heroics from Stickley to get his squad out of the woods. With the clock running, the Eagles faced a crucial fourth-and-14 from their own 18. But Stickley avoided a would-be tackler then stormed down the right sideline for a crucial first down at the 33-yard line. Stickley then zipped off another first-down run moments later before he took a knee to end the marathon.

Legacy (3-3) gave the unbeaten Eagles all they could handle, running back two kickoffs for touchdowns and recovering two more that led to touchdowns.

The Lions had a pair of equally effective offensive weapons in sophomore quarterback Travis May and hard-running sophomore back Ben Bargainer.

May had touchdown runs of 33, 20, 35, 50 and 4 yards, while Bargainer blitzed through the Eagle defense for touchdown trots of 50, 34, 45 and 11 yards.

The visitors only went to the airways 10 times for the game, with the two interceptions coming in the second half.

Stickley finished out his gala night with touchdown trots of 20, 10, 10, 15 and 5 yards, while Alexander finished out his eventful night with touchdown grabs of 23, 44, 18, 45, 20, 15, 37 and 47 yards. He finished the night with 18 catches for more than 300 yards.

Stickley finished his performance by zipping off 202 yards rushing, with the biggest one on the crucial first down to end the game.
