WEST COLUMBIA

Momentum shifted in a number of different ways in the Battle of the San Bernard between the Sweeny Bulldogs and Columbia Roughnecks Friday night.

The last big swing went the Bulldogs’ way as they rallied to take a 34-21 District 24-3A victory over the Roughnecks at Griggs Field.

The Roughnecks (0-2, 2-5) held a 21-13 lead with 9:40 left in the third quarter after running back Dakarius Bell scored on a 14-yard run. On that drive, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Sweeny bench helped the Roughnecks move into the red zone.

That seemed to help fire up the Bulldogs, who went on to score 21 unanswered points to win the game going away.

“It changed from early in the game,” Sweeny coach Paul Kilby said. “They had tremendous momentum in the game early. I was so proud of our kids and how they battled back to regain the momentum.

“It was nerve-wracking. (Columbia was) doing everything right. That’s a character-building win for our kids. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

After that Columbia score, Sweeny (1-1, 5-2) mounted a 65-yard touchdown drive that was capped when Anthany Simmons scored from 5 yards out with 7:42 in the third quarter. After Cody Erikson scored the two-point conversion to tie the game 21-21, the momentum seemed to stay on Sweeny’s side.

Columbia had a chance to regain the lead on its next possession. The Roughnecks moved the ball down to the Sweeny 25, but the drive stalled there. Sweeny took over on downs and mounted another drive to take the lead on its next possession.

“We didn’t execute like we should and we knew it was going to be who had the ball last,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “We had our opportunities to score down here. Give them credit, their defense played well and they stepped up when they had to.”

The 75-yard drive that gave Sweeny the lead was finished off when Simmons scored on an 11-yard run with 9:29 left in the fourth quarter. Blayne Bailey’s extra point put Sweeny up 28-21.

After the Bulldog defense forced a three-and-out, the Sweeny offense went on a 71-yard drive. Dorland Fields, who rushed for 250 yards in the contest, scored on a 9-yard run with 4:04 left in the game.

Columbia mounted a drive into Sweeny territory, but turned the ball over on downs with 2:20 left at the Bulldog 37. Sweeny went on to run out the clock.

The first half had several swings of momentum alone. Columbia’s Quinn Hendrick recovered a Sweeny fumble at the Roughneck 48 with 6:39 left in the first quarter to put the Roughnecks in great field position.

Columbia moved the ball to the Sweeny 7, but the Bulldog defense stopped Roughneck running back Dakarius Bell on a fourth-and-2 play to get the ball on downs with 3:28 left in the quarter.

But later, Columbia quarterback Jarius Kesee connected with Brock Bailey on a 53-yard pass down to the Sweeny 1 at the end of the first quarter to set up the first score of the game.

Kesee dove into the end zone from a yard out with 11:56 left in the opening quarter to help put Columbia up 7-0.

Sweeny marched 70 yards to tie the game. Simmons, who rushed for 90 yards, capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 9:07 left in the second quarter.

Sweeny’s Zedrik White intercepted a Kesee pass at the Sweeny 35 to set up the next Bulldog score. On the next play, Fields busted through the Columbia defense on a 65-yard run to put Sweeny on top 13-7 with 5:40 left in the first half. The extra point was missed.

Columbia battled back with a 67-yard drive to take the lead. Bell, who finished with 85 yards rushing, scored on a 5-yard run with 32 seconds left in the first half to tie the game.

Jacob Comer kicked the extra point to put Columbia up 14-13 at the half.
