Why do sprinters do it?

Sprinters have blocks which creates leverage in the legs when they start. I agree, it's extremely pointless.

I know a couple of coaches who use it in season if they have a rash of offside on kick off but they usually do not stay with it more than a couple of games

Because your dealing with some excited, pumped teenages. Keep them down and waiting for someone to say go! Keep them in their lanes and not jumping up and down and looking at the return set up? I think you have some good running horse's who need some blinders :)
