This is the 62nd Battle of the Bernard.

Is Sweeny play's like they did vs. La Marque minus the fumbles Sweeny should get the W. It will be a smash mouth, gritty kind of game full of emotion.

This is a big game for both teams who are long time rivals. Sweeny has too much offense and Columbia's defense is suspect. Sweeny by 14.

Columbia's defense is suspect.

Thats phrasing it lightly, but they did play much better against Stafford, even managed a goal line stand. But the lack of speed will make it difficult to slow down Sweeny. Need to make the first tackle or its over.

WC has been playing their JV on defense so far this season.

I think our coaches are going to suit up the varsity finally this week.

Sweeny-Columbia could be a nailbiter
By JOEL LUNA joel.luna@thefacts.com | Posted: Thursday, October 17, 2013 2:00 am

WEST COLUMBIA — After all the pomp and glamour, there is only one thing that will matter at the end of the 62nd meeting between Columbia and Sweeny — who got the win.

Both Columbia (0-1, 2-4) and Sweeny (0-1, 4-2) started off District 24-3A on the wrong foot and now are looking to get back in the playoff race.
The 7:30 p.m. Friday kickoff at Griggs Field will pit the top two rushers in the district and also the two worst defenses in 24-3A.

Columbia sophomore Dakarius Bell (168 rushes, 1,172 yards, 17 TDs) and Sweeny senior Dorland Fields (137-1,043 yards, 15 TDs) will test those defenses all night long.

“They are a very good ball club who has been good all season on offense and last week played well defensively,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “They limited the La Marque offense to less than 200 yards, and anytime you do something like that, you are doing something right.”

But the Roughneck defense (399.5 yards per game), which ranks last in the district, gave up 28 points in the first half to Stafford last week, but held them to a single score in the final 24 minutes of play.

“That kickoff return to start the second half got our motor going, so they definitley stepped up last week,” Lynch said. “If we can just get that whole unit some more reps, I think we can do something in the coming weeks including Friday.

“We’ve had some injuries on defense and even had Jarius (Kesee) back there this past weekend. But they finally started making some plays and that was the one thing I noticed about them.”

The Sweeny defense hadn’t been that much better until facing La Marque last week at Bulldog Stadium. Though they dropped that matchup to the Cougars, the Bulldog defense kept them in the ball game.

“One thing that we’ve been stressing and building them up on defensively is to play hard and physical,” Sweeny coach Paul Kilby said. “I think our defense finally realized that because they really stepped up and played much better against a La Marque team with a lot of speed. We want to keep building on that mentally, and as long as they play like that their confidence is only going to grow.”

Kilby’s concern all season has been mostly with the Bulldog defense, but that changed a bit last week.

“Offensively we made some mistakes and something we are not used to seeing too much of,” he said. “I thought we really took a step backward last week.”

Sweeny's offense comes into West Columbia averaging 429.7 yards a game. In addition to Field, the Bulldogs also have junior tailback Anthany Simmons (88-776 yards, eight TDs), who has been pretty productive along with Fields in the slot-T.

“This is something fairly new that we will be facing with the slot-T, and for us it is going to be all about executing on defense and gang tackling,” Lynch said. “There is going to be a lot of misdirection going so we must play assignment football.

“One of the things that we didn’t do very well against Stafford was our special teams, so we need to execute there as well and just play well in all three phases.”

Aside from Bell giving them that production, junior quarterback Jarius Kesee (47-for-98, 667 passing yards, six interceptions, three TDs) has been pretty productive in his first season starting under center. But the Roughnecks need a better start then they had in Stafford last week.

“I thought we had some blown assignments on offense and these kids have to understand that they must do what they are being coached,” Lynch said. “We didn’t change any of the blocking schemes, but we just had some mental breakdowns. We need to get a better start in that department.”

The San Bernard battle has the Roughnecks ahead in the series 32-28-1, including the last three meetings between these two rival schools.

“I really do think we got to play keep-away,” Kilby said. “We have to keep it away from their offense. That could be huge for us in this San Bernard battle.”

Columbia offensive line has been very productive
Columbia offensive line powers no. 1 offense

WEST COLUMBIA — Running back Dakarius Bell is getting the headlines, but it is the guys knocking heads in the trenches who are giving him the holes that have helped make Columbia the No. 1 offense in District 24-3A.

As returning starters, seniors Tyler Rathkamp at center and tackle Quinn Hendrick brought experience to the offensive line, which also includes guards Collin Heidaker and Anton Mayer and tackle Phillip Martinez.

Rathkamp and Hendrick downplay their roles as leaders of the offensive line, saying everyone on the line is even on the playing field. That includes them all being less than 205 pounds, giving Columbia one of the smallest lines in the league, but still one of the most productive run-blocking groups in the league.

Bell, who leads 24-3A with 1,172 yards rushing, immediately gave credit to the offensive line.

“These are my boys,” Bell said. “They protect me on the field and I do appreciate them for that.”

The offensive line has been effective due to their strong team mentality.

“We have weird code names for each other,” Hendrick said. “Mostly we have team bonding on Thursday night when we go to a buffet and chow down.”

As much respect as Bell has for the offensive line, the line seems to have just as much respect for their running back.

“We know when we are blocking or even when we don’t block well, he is going to make the play,” Rathkamp said.
Bell also has 17 touchdowns. Despite being just a sophomore, Bell has remained composed and unwavering in the spotlight.

“Get the ball and run behind them,” Bell said about his mentality going into games this season. “I don’t pay attention to the paper much. I try to just play my game.”

This week, the Roughnecks will be facing archrival Sweeny. Bell and the offensive line realize it is a big game as the ’Necks need to get on track in district after losing to Stafford last week.

“Going into the game we know there is going to be a lot of running of the football by both them and us,” Hendrick said.
