Mine was 1978 Class B. Wheeler and Union Hill in Abilene. Wheeler rode in in Greyhound buses riding a long winning streak.........but left with a 14-7 defeat to the hands of the Bulldogs. The "Hill" went on to win another title in 82 and a runner up in 84...........my how those times have past. They may have sported the worst Class A teams in history over the last 5or so years.

Mine was Wheeler vs Bremond at Shotwell Stadium 1987. Wheeler won on a last second field goal from inside a extra point. The kick went straight up and hit the cross bar right at the center and rolled in. It did not bounce hardly at all. It was one of those breathtaking moments like a last second basketball shot that rolls around the rim. Very exciting game. 23-21

Class 3A 1982 Refugio vs Littlefield in Brownwood! I lived in Refugio then and was up visiting grandparents for Christmas break that weekend. Stadium was just a couple of miles from their house. Now that's convenient.

BTW, Refugio beat Navasota something like 23-0 the week before. My have times changed. lol

Celina and Liberty Hill in 06 at Floyd Casey. I just remember it was Celina's first year in 3A and we had lost to Liberty Hill in the first round that year so I felt obliged to go. It was an awesome game that ended on a FG by Liberty Hill. I remember hearing it was only like the second FG he had attempted all year.

Judson Rockets vs Westbrook - 1983. We lost, but is was a not a blow out. They Played in the Astrodome. Me being the dumbass teenager at the time decided girls, cars, and money were more important than finishing out my senior year on the team. I was the starting tackle. Kudos to my old team mates for a very successful year. At my 30 year HS reunion I still got asked, man why did you quit? All i can say is - stupidity. GO ROCKETS! I went to a few of their SC appearance after graduation, might of heard of them as they have racked up a few in 5A!

I have to correct myself (getting old) - in 82-83 we made it to the quarter finals and lost to West brook. In 83-84 school year, we went on to SC game and won against Midland lee. That was in Texas Stadium. That year we had all state running back Chris Pryor. He could run the ball but was dumb as a stump. LOL.

Okay, I'll have to admit..., the first state championship game I ever went to was in 1981. Gilmer got spanked by Cameron Yoe, 26-3. It was a very cold and windy day at Floyd Casey stadium that day in December, with an occasional flurry. That was the days before we discovered the forward pass, and Yoe stacked the box with 9 to 10 players nearly every play. Interestingly enough, we grabbed the lead in that game at 3-0, just like against Navasota this past season, and it all went downhill from there...

First one I ever went to in person was December 20, 2004 Stratford vs. Shiner in Wichita Falls. Shiner won 33 -14. I had never went to see another team play other than one I played on or one my boys played in before or after that. I saw 2 games for titles in 2006 and 2007 for Celina. My youngest was on those teams. They lost in 2006 in the last 6 seconds to a field goal by Liberty Hill and they won against China Spring in 2007 and completed an undefeated season. Watched a lot of championship games on TV though.

The school is named for C.H. Yoe who donated the land for the school. There is only one school in Cameron. I really don't know why media has taken to referring to the school that way. People from Cameron never refer to it in that fashion. I think that it is a recent trend of referring to multiple schools in larger cities. They have even started to refer small 1A schools with larger nearby towns, Temple Academy and Corsicana Mildred comes to mind.

Sorry, it is just a pet peve.

So, is the high school building itself named after Mr. Yoe, and not the school, or neither? If the school building has been named after Mr. Yoe, I can understand the confusion. Whoever started that trend in the media needs to be taken behind the woodshed! If the people in the town don't call it Yoe High School, and it's the only high school in town..., the media needs to drop the "Yoe" part. There's several schools around the state that have a larger town nearby that is put in front of their school's name, and some get upset about that. It happens. There's a 2A school about 8 or 9 miles to the west of Gilmer called Harmony. Much to the chagrin of the people in the Rosewood area (where the school is located), they used to call it Gilmer Harmony. Now, it is Big Sandy Harmony, when Big Sandy is a whole lot smaller town, and a whole lot further away. Makes no sense to me.

I have actually been to every Classification State Championship at least one time in my life. First State Championship was the 8-man State Championship in 1972 Chilton beat Windthorst 6-0, followed by Class B Celina vs Big Sandy 1974, then I saw Richland Springs beat Rule in 2006 in the 6 Man State Championship. I actually just lack the Super Bowl and the BCS National Championship game are the only two left on my bucket list. I have seen ever NCAA National Championship Division except the BCS. Probablly will never make it to my final two on the list, but I almost climbed the top of the mountain.

and PI fans short sleeve shirts. Right before kickoff a
Blue Norther blew in and it dropped from 70 to mid 20's by
Kickoff. Yoe captains messed up and kicked off against
The wind. Did not matter Yoe was ahead by 30 points
at halftime so I left even thou I did have a jacket. Those were
The days when weather forecasts were not very good.

The first one I saw was in 1965 Plano 20 Edna 17 both were 2A. However the real state championship game was a few weeks earlier in Corsicana when Plano beat West 6-0, this was the best high school game I have ever seen. West should have won that night but had two fumbles inside the 10 yard line that killed their drives.
