SNAPPED 'NECKS: Bay City stuns Columbia 61-36 to end 19-game skid

By ANTHONY MAENZA sports@thefacts.com | Posted: Saturday, October 5, 2013 2:00 am

WEST COLUMBIA — Getting out of a hole can be difficult. Digging out of a 20-point hole in the first quarter proved to be impossible for the Columbia Roughnecks.

Momentum at the end of the first half didn’t hold up in the second half as the Roughnecks fell to Bay City 61-36 Friday night in their final nondistrict game of the season.

“We were down in a hole and the kids got us back within six at the half,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “Second half, we couldn’t get anything started on offense or defense.”

Bay City, which earned its first victory in two full years, didn’t need to punt the entire game as the Blackcats ran through the Columbia offense for 500 yards.

Columbia’s offense tried its best to keep things closes, rolling up 442 total yards. Running back Dakarius Bell finished with 254 rushing yards and four touchdowns, but could muster only 17 yards in the second half.

It looked like the Roughnecks (2-3) would make a big comeback after trailing 27-7 after the first quarter.

Bell scored on runs of 4, 13 and 10 yards in the second quarter to pull the Roughnecks within 41-29.

Kalen Williams intercepted a Bay City pass to set Columbia up at its own 36 with 1:41 left in the first half.

Williams stretched out to make a spectacular diving catch in the end zone on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Jarius Kesee 12 seconds before intermission to leave the Roughnecks down 41-36 at the half.

The Columbia defense had no answer for the Bay City offense in the second half, though, and the Roughneck offense didn’t do much either as the Blackcats outscored the home team 20-0 in the second half.

Stacy Monroe caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zavien Gartica with 9:35 left in the third quarter to stretch the Bay City lead to 48-36.

When the fourth quarter started, Bay City started to pound the ball on the ground against a tired Columbia defense. Da’Shaun Smith, who rushed for 134 yards, scored on a 7-yard run with 9:05 left in the fourth quarter.

Stacy Monroe capped off the Bay City win with a 38-yard touchdown run with 2:24 left in the game.

Gartica hit Marcus Pointer with a 58-yard touchdown pass with 9:36 left in the opening period to put the Blackcats on top 7-0.

Columbia then fumbled away the ensuing kickoff to put Bay City in business again. Pointer caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Gartica to cap a 21-yard drive to put the Blackcats up 13-0.

After Bell scored on a 10-yard run to cut the Bay City lead to 13-7, Pointer caught his third touchdown pass of the opening quarter on a 20-yard toss from Gartica with 3:34 in the period to put Bay City back up by 13.

Bay City’s Jonathan Arriaga stripped the ball away from Bell and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to put Bay City up 27-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Roughnecks have to put the rough loss behind them as they prepare to play Stafford to start the District 24-3A season next week.

“This part of the season is now over,” Lynch said. “Now the second part of the season starts.”

Haha I think we just need our old coach back :(

So typical of internet know-it-all fans. If I'm not mistaken, you and the rest of the Roughneck crew, were excited that Coach Lynch was given the job (which he deserved by the way). For you to say that the talent is "equal" to the semi-final runs of a couple years ago shows exactly how little you actually know about high school football. Randy Lynch has forgotten more football than you will ever know.

But since you're the expert here and a dyed-in-the-wool fan of the Dub C (and since its a free country) you can openly talk about firing a man because the 15, 16, 17, and 18 year old kids that he's attempting to win games with aren't producing at the rate you would like. AND, I can vividly remember when Leland was on the "internet hot seat" because his teams weren't winning like Coach Lane's teams won the previous few years. Oh, but then, they go to the semis twice and he was no longer an idiot that needed to be fired. Fairweather fans disgust me.

And if you're a real fan, your quote about not going to the games because you didn't want to watch crappy football disputes every "I'm a Roughneck fan" statement you can possibly make.

Support your team or get off the bandwagon.

And trust me, I have no horse in this race. I have zero affiliation with WC or Coach Lynch. I just cannot stand front-runners.

Hahaha I was a bandwagoner?? Lmao

I'm just saying there is no excuse to be this bad. You guys might accept young and inexperienced as an excuse to get throttled every week, but I see plenty of talent... A crapload more offensively than we've had in the past...

But our defense can't find their ass with both hands. I call it like I see it. You don't have to like my opinion. When we're good, we're good. When we suck, we suck.

Lol I didn't say fire him, go back to being OC... I just want a little of our old defense back. I wasn't "excited" that lunch was hired, but if surv was going to leave who better to give it to? I didn't forsee our defense going to absolute ****.

This team doesn't have as much talent defensively as in years past, but has quite a bit more offensively. Overall, it's about equal. The talent defensively is much better than the on-field product.

I didn't go watch them because I knew we'd lose in an embarrassing fashion. It's hard to watch.

I haven't stopped supporting them and never will. I just have high expectations... Or ATLEAST higher than this crap lately. I'll still get my hopes up every week that they can turn this around.

I honestly don't care what any of you think. I call it like I see it. Might be right, might be wrong, but I'll say what I wanna say. I'm not blaming any of the kids, I think we've got a fairly talented bunch, just not being used correctly, defensively... Which is painfully obvious.

Yes, you're right about one thing...you can say whatevery you want to say. But what you're saying shows that you are a front-runner. There is no denying it. At least be honest with yourself. You're not a true fan at all. Period. End of debate.

I fixed your post above.

Well what's worse, me blaming the coach or the kids? I'm not going to blame the kids. I realize the talent might not be as good, but it's definitely not bad. WC is playing to about 20% of their potential. Getting pounded by inferior teams, and getting absolutely owned in the 2nd half every week... Tell me that's not on the coaches

Lol alright guy

Didn't you know? "True" fans don't have the right to complain. I'm gonna try to remember that if there isn't a change at starting QB for the Birds next week. LOL

I would love for you to share with us the algorithm that allows you to figure the percentage of potential the current Columbia players are playing to.

Second half has not been kind to Columbia.

Necks have been outscored in the second half of every game.

A total of 114-54... :ack!:

Lol are you honestly arguing that WC is playing anywhere close to their potential?

Our players are unprepared, out of position, blown assignments, extremely penalized, out of shape and they quit when they get behind. All reflections of the coaching

So you know their preparation level, where they should be playing, what their assignments are, and how much they're conditioning the team? And I would summise that when kids quit when they're behind, its usually a reflection of the KID rather than the COACH. Oh, and if we're talking about "quitting when behind" what exactly do YOU do when your team isn't doing well? You don't show up and support them...that's what you do (your words, not mine). Maybe the quitting when behind is a WC thing to which you would be obviously very schooled in....

Yo, you watch your mouth, bro. Quitting when behind is a Saggy Aggie thing, not a West Columbia thing. :p

As opposed to years past, yes I can tell this team is unprepared. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure when there are blown assignments. Wide receivers running wide open down field is normally a good indication.

I would agree, if it were just one kid, but not an entire team.

And no, I haven't quit. Me not going to the game had more to do with the fact that I live in northwest Houston and my family was coming over. I still could've went, and almost did, but all of the above, coupled with the fact that it was obvious we're going to get drilled lead me to stay at home. I've missed maybe half a dozen games in 6 years, TWO of which were good. I'm as diehard of a fan as there is, I'm just also realistic. I don't put lipstick on a pig.

But I'm glad you've got it all figured out bud.

I'm clearly a bandwagoner/fair weather fan who isn't a true fan because I complain when we get our asses kicked.

That's why I'm a fan of the Aggies, texans, Astros, roughnecks and rockets.... All perennial winners...

Yeah right man... I was an Aggie fan before A&M was cool. I was here defending the Aggies when they got their asses kicked in the 2nd half every week 2 years ago. I post about the Astros constantly... 51-111... Yep... Front runner...

Rockets haven't been anything more than mediocre since the 90s... Texans have been decent the last 2 years and that's it... I was right there during the 2-14 year... Obviously complaining a bit.

WC has only been good 3 times in the 12 or so years ice been associated with them... Clearly a fair weather fan....

Only good three times? We were good three of the four years that I was there, just got unlucky with playoff matchups (Cuero in '05 was a tough one).

Let me rephrase, made it past area round 3 times in 12 years...

We had good teams scattered throughout but not even for fair weather fans to hop on the bandwagon
