WEST COLUMBIA — A third-quarter nightmare engineered by a Hempstead quarterback was too much for Columbia as they fell 44-36 on homecoming night Friday.

Hempstead quarterback Will Smith ran roughshod over the Roughnecks (2-2) as he rushed for 316 yards and led the Bobcats to 27 straight points in the third quarter to put them in control heading into the final quarter.

“We took kickoff in the second half and went down and scored to put us up by eight,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “Defensively we needed to make plays. We had guys in the right position, but they needed to make plays. Offensively, we had a lot of yards, but we left some points on the field, too.”

Both offenses ran over opposing defenses, amassing 475 total yards off offense. The only difference was on the scoreboard.

Dakarius Bell, who rushed for 209 yards for Columbia, helped put the Roughnecks up 22-14 with 10:24 left in the third quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run.

Adam Banks caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Smith just more than a minute later to leave Columbia up by one.

Hempstead then recovered an onside kick at the Columbia 48 to put them in business again. One play later, Deondre Toler caught a touchdown pass from Justin Marin to put the Bobcats up 27-22 with 9:07 left in the third quarter.

Two minutes later, Smith broke loose on an 82-yard run to the Columbia 2 to set up the next Bobcat score. Smith went in from a yard out with 5:29 left in the third to put Hempstead up 34-22.

Columbia mounted a drive of its own and got down to the Hempstead 14, but penalties and negative yards stalled the drive at the Hempstead 22.

Not long after that, Smith broke loose on a 79-yard touchdown run with 1:15 left in the third to put Hempstead up 41-22.

The Roughnecks tried to mount a comeback. Bell capped a 40-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 10:55 left in the fourth quarter. Jacob Comer’s kick left Columbia down 41-29.

Kicker Mario Malagon accounted for Hempstead’s only points in the fourth quarter when he kicked a 25-yard field goal with 7:20 left in the game to put Hempstead up 44-29.

Columbia quarterback Jarius Kesee scored the final Roughneck touchdown on a 25-yard run with 1:42 left in the game to make it close.

In the first half, LaMarquis Fields caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Kesee to help put the Necks up 8-0.

After Hempstead took a 14-8 lead, Dennis Moody caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Kesee to leave the Roughnecks with a 15-14 lead at the half.
