EDNA — A comfortable 20-point lead wasn’t enough as the Sweeny Bulldogs had to come from behind to pull out a near-impossible 51-47 win against the Edna Cowboys on Friday night.

The almost monumental collapse by the Bulldogs was saved by a 16-play drive as senior Dorland Fields scored his fourth touchdown of the night to pull out the exciting win, much to the dismay of the hometown crowd at Cowboy Memorial Stadium.

“This was just a great, great high school football game,” an exhausted Sweeny coach Paul Kilby said afterward. “It was their homecoming and two small towns just battling it out. We prevailed in the end, but you have to give them tremendous credit. What a football team. They were the better team in the second half.”

And Sweeny (4-1) needed help in that final drive, a muffed punt from Marquis Broussard after a fourth down and 33 from their own 12-yard line, as the Bulldogs continued toward their goal line. Ten plays later Fields (17-205 rushing yards, four TDs) went around the corner with 51 ticks on the clock.

“There at the end we were just telling each other that we had to pull together and get this win or else that bus drive home would have been a long one,” Fields said.

Sweeny still needed an interception by senior linebacker Brendan Frankum with 21 seconds remaining to finally seal the win and save themselves from a tough two weeks contemplating the loss.

“With a week off to think about it, this would have been very, very hard to stomach,” Kilby said. “That is just what is so incredible about this team. They battled through adversity.”

Edna trailed 34-14 at halftime after an incredible first quarter by Fields. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound tailback romped for 169 first-quarter yards in just four carries and scored three times as the Bulldogs bolted to a 20-0 lead.

The Bulldogs increased that lead by halftime after a couple more scores from Anthany Simmons and a 7-yard scoring run by Ross Nairn.

But Fields wasn’t seen much of in the second quarter, mostly because of a possible dislocated finger. In fact Fields was probably done but decided to come back late in the second half after the Cowboys kept getting closer and closer.

Edna (2-2) needed just two plays to score to start the third quarter after a 38-yard run from Marquis Broussard and a 19-yard jaunt into the end zone by Austin Kelley, 34-21.

Dallas Blackstock stretched the Bulldog lead to 37-21 after a 27-yard field goal with 5:08 left in the third quarter.

Simmons (14-136 rushing yards, 2 TDs) then made it 44-28 after a 48-yard run up the middle after breaking a few tackles to stretch the lead to 44-28.

But in that crazy fourth period, with just a couple of minutes gone, Cowboys’ Darnelius Norman came up with an interception at the Sweeny 4 yard line. After one play the Cowboys were within 10 points, 44-34.

Fields then fumbled on the Bulldogs next series and five plays later, Broussard plunged in from the 4-yard line and just like that Edna was within a field goal, 44-41.

On the ensuing kickoff by Edna the ball slipped through three Bulldogs and a Cowboy pounced on it with the ball winding up at the Sweeny 5 yard line.

After trailing the first three quarters, Kelley gave the Cowboys their first lead with 7:02 remaining in the contest, 47-44.

Sweeny will have a bye next week but then open up District 24-3A play at home on Oct. 11 against La Marque.
