Oh great! First Carl Padilla and Jerry Forrest pick us to beat Brownwood and now we're being mentioned in the AP poll.
So much for flying under the radar before district play starts.

Gilmer was 4A in 1996 and 1997. They skewed the numbers in the 1996 realignment badly. Except for those two years, Gilmer has been 3A since the 1980 realignment. When they changed Class B to Class A, Class A to AA, AAA to AAAA, etc. Gilmer remained in 3A instead of moving up to 4A. Interestingly enough, Carthage was in Gilmer's district those two years. Gilmer shut them out both seasons.

I take it Sweetwater may not deserve a mention, are there others?

Which poll do you think reflects actual rankings better?

There's not a poll that is the best IMO, but Sweetwater does not deserve votes...they are 2-2 with losses to 2A teams.....last week a 5A school got votes in the 4A poll....just a couple of examples of AP writers who have a vote and simply don't pay attention

Polls are subjective and I'm not going to debate whether or not Sweetwater belongs in this poll. But I do have an issue with the above statement.

I posted this in the SW/BW thread and I'm going to post it here also.

Hey guys, for what it's worth here is a look at the two 2A schools (Wall and Eastland) that Sweetwater has lost to in it's first four games.

Here is pigskinpreps 2A Division I top ten based on their power ratings system.

1 2A - 3 Wall (4-0) 160.60
2 2A - 11 Franklin (4-0) 160.57
3 2A - 13 Cameron Yoe (3-0) 160.42
4 2A - 9 Tatum (3-0) 160.10
5 2A - 10 Newton (3-0) 159.16
6 2A - 14 Hallettsville (4-0) 157.32
7 2A - 8 New Boston (4-0) 156.37
8 2A - 13 Lago Vista (2-1) 152.60
9 2A - 4 Eastland (4-0) 151.05
10 2A - 7 Malakoff (4-0) 147.57

Currently they project Wall to finish 16-0 by beating Eastland (13-1) in the quarter-finals and then winning the 2A D II state championship by beating Franklin. Point being these two schools ain't no slouches as some on here seem to think they might be, 2A or not.

They aren't slouches by any means, but there's no way a 3A team with 2 losses, both to 2A opponents should merit top 10 consideration.

Right. Gilmer was in 3A from 1968 to 1979 when 3A was what is now 4A and there was only one class higher than 3A. Those were lean years. The frustration of being one of the smallest schools became a negative reinforcement loop and participation levels in the program crashed. My team in 1976 had about 19 players left as the season wound down. It's the only reason I got to play so much in those last few games. It certainly wasn't my superior talent. Coach Green was scraping the bottom of the barrel. Anyone with any sense had already quit.

By the way, in the league in Arlington where my U12 girls team plays, some teams are from way out west and east Texas... Midland/Odessa, Lubbuck, San Angelo, Abilene, Tyler, Longview. I've seen teams as far as Amarillo play in this league! Now that's taking soccer serious. I thought we had it rough at 170 miles round trip. lol

So if the season ended today. Who is a lock for big school?

1. Carthage - Could go either way. Lufkin Hudson making the playoffs would drive Carthage to small
2. Gilmer - Looks like a small school lock unless 2 of Chapel Hill, Hendeerson, and Kilgore miss the playoffs
(tie) Navasota - Pretty solid big school unless College Station HS and Taylor both make it
4. Argyle - Could go either way dependent on Aubrey. If Aubrey is in Argyle goes big
5. Kilgore - Lock for big
6. Graham - Goes small unless Iowa Park or Vernon steps up
7. Stephenville - Lock for big
8. Celina - Lock for small
9. Port Isabel - Either way
10. El Campo - Lock for big

For Graham, I would bet pretty heavy that Vernon will get in. It will just be a matter of if Iowa Park can keep Hirschi or Burk out.
