WHARTON — First half momentum turned into a second-half nightmare for the Columbia Roughnecks on Friday night as they lost to Wharton 44-28 in a non-district game.

After a first half in which the Roughnecks dominated possession of the football, things fell apart.

Wharton outgained Columbia 273-155 in the second half. Of those yards gained by Columbia in the final two quarters, 50 came on a touchdown pass from Jarius Kesee to Brock Bailey with 50 seconds left in the game.

“In the first half special teams really hurt us,” Columbia Coach Randy Lynch said. “In the second half, we had to play catch-up. But the kids continued to battle to the end. We have to do that every game.”

Wharton’s Toney Rogers gained 168 yards rushing and scored on touchdown runs of 15, 38 and 42 yards in the second half. Teammate Anthony Ray scored the other Wharton touchdown in the second half on an 8-yard run.

Kesee finished the night with 226 yards passing. He completed 15 of 27 passes on the night and had one interception.

Columbia running back Dakarius Bell had a good night running the ball as he rushed for 129 yards.

Columbia dominated possession of the ball in the first half, but only clung to a 22-15 lead at halftime. The Roughnecks outgained the Tigers 264 to 19 in the first two quarters, but Wharton’s special teams play kept the game close.

Wharton took the lead with 10:57 left in the first quarter when Dontay Bell returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown. Rogers caught a two-point conversion pass from Joseph Krenek to give the Tigers an 8-0 lead.

The Roughnecks battled back later in the first quarter to tie the game. Dennis Moody caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Kesee with 6:14 left in the first quarter. Moody then caught the two-point conversion pass from Kesee to tie the game 8-8.

There were two big plays on the 71-yard drive. Punter Zach Dodds completed a 30-yard pass to LaMarquis Fields on a fake punt with 9:25 left in the first quarter to keep the drive alive. Then Kesee completed a 27- yard pass to Kalen Williams to the Wharton 4 yard line to set up the touchdown pass.

Columbia took the lead with 41 seconds left in the first quarter when Dakarius Bell ran the ball into the end zone from 19 yards out. The play capped an 88-yard drive.

On the ensuing kickoff, Wharton’s LeeShad O’Neal returned the ball 65 yards for a touchdown with 27 seconds left in the first quarter. Columbia regained the lead with 8:58 left in the second quarter. Brandon Harris caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Kesee. The two-point conversion pass was good and gave the Roughnecks a 7-point advantage.

The Wharton Tigers relied on big special teams plays in the first half to stay in the game and a dominating offense in the second half to take a 44-28 victory over the Columbia Roughnecks Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

The Roughnecks were forced to punt on their opening possesion, and Dontay Bell returned it 65 yards for a touchdown.

Joseph Krenek connected with Toney Rogers for the 2-point conversion making the score 8-0 with 10:57 left in the first quarter.

On Columbia’s next drive on fourth and7 from the Tiger 31, Jarius Kesee connected with Kalen Williams for 27 yards to the Tiger 4. Three plays later, Kesee connected with Dennis Moody from 3 yards out for a touchdown.

Kesee connected with Moody again for the 2-point conversion, evening the score at 8-8 with 6:14 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers were forced to punt on their next possesion, and the Roughnecks took advantage.

On third and 11 from their own 41, Kesee connected with Dakarius Bell for 40 yards to the Tiger 19. Bell ran the ball in for a touchdown on the next play.

Jacob Comer’s kick was no good, making the score 14-8 with :41 left in the first quarter.

Leeshad O’neal returned the ensuing kickoff 68 yards for a touchdown.

Eluid Guajardo’s extra point gave the Tigers a 15-14 lead with 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

Columbia regained the lead early in the second quarter when Kesee connected with Brandon Harris from 39 yards out for a touchdown.

Kesee connected with Steve Perkins for the 2-point conversion, making the score 22-15 with 8:58 left in the first half.

The Roughnecks drove to the Tiger 24 on their next possesion, but a fumble by Kesee ended that drive, and the Tigers took over.

Both teams were forced to punt on their opening drives of the third quarter and the Tigers started their second drive at the Roughneck 49.

On third and 6 from the Columbia 45, Rogers picked up a big first down with 10 yards to the Roughneck 35.

On fourth and 5 from the 30, Joseph Krenek picked up a 15-yard run to the Columbia 15. After Rogers picked up 7 yards on the next play, Anthony Ray Jr. ran the ball in for a touchdown. Guajardo’s extra point made the score 22-22 with 6:21 left in the third quarter.

After another Roughneck punt, the Tigers took over at their own 17. After a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 8, Krenek connected with Ashton Branch for 73 yards to the Columbia 19. Rogers picked up two yards on the next play, and Krenek added 10 yards on the next play. After an 8 yard loss by Krenek to the Roughneck 15, Rogers ran the ball in for a touchdown on the next play.

Guajardo’s extra point made the score 29-22 with 1:31 left in the third quarter.

The Roughnecks turned the ball over on downs after an incomplete pass on their next drive, and the Tigers took over at the Roughneck 45.

Jessie Garza picked up 8 yards on the next play and Rogers ran the ball in from 37 yards out for a touchdown on the next play.

The 2-point conversion try failed leaving the score 35-22 with 10:25 left in the game.

Columbia fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the ball went into the end zone where they picked up the ball and got tackled for a safety, making the score 37-22 with 10:18 left in the game.

O’neal returned the kickoff to the Roughneck 32 and after a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 42 Rogers ran the ball in for a touchdown on the next play making the score 44-22 with 9:44 left in the game.

Kesee connected with Brock Bailey from 45 yards out for a Columbia touchdown.

Kesee’s pass failed for the 2-point converesion leaving the score 44-28 with :50 left in the game.

Bell recovered the onside kick for the Tigers and they were able to run out the clock.

Rogers led the Tigers with 148 yards on 15 carries.

Krenek completed eight of 16 passes for 131 yards.

The Tigers, now 3-0 on the season, travel to Freeport next Friday to take on the Brazosport Exporters at Hopper Field
