SWEENY — Sweeny’s offense put it in overdrive in the second half Friday, just like they did a week ago.

The Bulldogs (3-0) came out of the locker room with a vengeance, scoring four touchdowns to finally pull away from a tough Brazosport Exporter squad en route to a 48-30 win Friday night at Bulldog Stadium that put the Exporters at 0-3.

“I am very impressed with our kids with the way they did it because we didn’t make many adjustments at the half but the few points we did, they absorbed it,” Sweeny coach Paul Kilby said. “And to come out and execute it, they just played with tremendous heart.”

The second-half barrage started with the opening kickoff as junior Anthany Simmons ran the ball back for 52 yards to the Exporter 21-yard line. Four plays later senior Dorland Fields busted in from the 7-yard line as the Bulldogs had some breathing room with a 27-18 lead.

Brazosport, who stayed with Sweeny in the first half point for point, came right back with a drive that eventually was stalled because of penalties. The Exporters Jeremiah Credit scored on a 36-yard run, but that was called back because of holding. Eventually the Ships just ran out of downs.

Meanwhile, Sweeny continued to grind it out on the ground as the Bulldogs scored on their next possession, which went eight plays for 78 yards as Simmons (20-196 rushing yards) scored his third touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run.

Sweeny’s defense stopped the Exporters on the next drive and on the night only threw the ball twice in the game. On Taylor Robertson’s second throw, he connected with Derek Davis for a 33-yard pass. But Davis, who was being held by an Exporter defender, broke away for the final 15 yards and another score.

Fields (21 carries, 160 yards) finished the scoring for the Bulldogs with his third touchdown on a 22-yard run with 10:17 remaining and the Bulldogs comfortably ahead, 48-18.

It was a great night for the Bulldog offensive line as they rushed for 435 yards on the ground.

“They have really bought in, and we feel blessed to be around these young men,” Kilby said of his offensive line. “You hate to single anyone out because they are all doing a great job, but we do have three seniors, Josh Jones, Justin Ferguson and Jeoffrey Montalvo who are just leading the way.”

Brazosport again fell short of their first win of the season but the Exporters had what it took to pull this one out.

In the first 24 minutes there were 27 first downs and more than 400 yards of offense by both teams as the Bulldogs held a slim 20-18 lead.

Brazosport senior Emond Hobbs led the way for the Ships as he threw for 83 yards, including a 34-yard strike to Claude Lowe in the first period that brought them within a point of Sweeny, 13-12.

Hobbs had opened the scoring for the Exporters with a 17-yard run, and in the second quarter Jeremiah Credit added a 2-yard score. The Ships accounted for 221 offensive yards in the first half but failed on all three two-point conversions.

Sweeny broke a two-game Brazosport win streak in the series as the 25th meeting was a Bulldog night
