Actually, the last time we played in Graham (2011), Wylie won. That game stands out in my mind because it was the first time I ever remember us winning at Newton Field. We haven't had much success there over the years, for sure.

This is a good rivalry and I look forward to the game.

Graham has a really good team, and is on a roll right now, but i can tell you after seeeing Wylie Friday that they are a very good team. The Bulldogs have the most balanced offense the Bulls have played so far this season, and you know they are a well-coached Sandifer team that executes very well and exploits every team's weaknesses very well. I think the Steers by no more than 14 in this one.

You don't have to worry about AW giving Graham a good game. Sandifer will have them ready. Graham is good. If Graham beats AW by more than 21 pts, they are legit.

They are good Luckydawg no doubt. I don't see Graham beating AW by a bunch though. I've been wrong before but usually because of a homer pick. ;) Graham hasn't played a team as solid as AW yet.

Mineral Wells ? Sorry, not a good year for them again.
Brownwood ? Very young and missing a ton of key players.

So far, Graham has dominated 2 very down teams at this point in the season. AW will be a good test.

Uhhh, yeah. The bad calls or missed calls wouldn't have changed the fact that Aledo is that good and still would have won, but would have made a difference in momentum. Would have been a closer game, maybe. ;)

In my opinion they are much bigger and faster, we have a more athletic team the only downfall is some young players that lack the experience but up to this point they have played well. This week will be a good test for graham to see where they are really at.

The offense looks better than it did last year at this point. If I was being picky, I would say that the O-line needs to do a little better job with run blocking. Defense is starting two sophomores, but looks to be about as good as last years. Run defense has been outstanding. Pass defense gave up a couple of plays this week but overall have been pretty solid. This week should tell us a little more on where were at. MW was terrible, but Wood was pretty decent. Wood will be a good team when they get the other kids back. Graham made both teams look pretty bad though. I believe we scored on the first 3 or 4 drives against Wood.

Like I said before, if Graham wins by more than 21, they are worth their ranking. Argyle hung 38 and produced a shutout none the less. Graham, this is probably going to be your toughest test until the playoffs. Springtown may produce enough resistance to make a decent game. Remember, the SC has to go thru Argyle and Gilmer this year again and both look to be very good.

Worth their ranking? Rankings mean nothing to me at this point in the year. A win this week and another deep playoff run is all I want to see. And the state championships run thru Navasota and Ville until proven otherwise.

Like I said, a win is a win! It doesn't matter to me if its by 3 or 30. FYI, what happened in Jr. High has no relevance on the outcome of this game. A couple of the impact players on this team were not even in Graham in Jr. High. And there are a few that have been on varsity since they were sophomores.

Agree that they are a good measuring stick. Very good program, and IMO if we get by them we could finish the regular season undefeated barring any major injuries. At the same time, I don't believe point differential in a game this early on means squat. Wylie kicked our tail last year and know one thought we would make it past a couple of rounds in the playoffs. Turns out that we had a pretty good run.

A little article from the paper about last weeks game and this weeks game.

BY TRAVIS LISLE
sports@grahamleader.com follow @travlisle on twitter
When people talk about the Brownwood Lions, it’s usually the rich history of the program mentioned, from the prolific career of head coach Gordon Wood to its seven state championships between 1960 and 1981.
The Graham Steers have their own history with the Lions, and a new chapter was written Friday night in the Steers’ 56-15 win over Brownwood. Twenty-one times from 1951 to 1977, the Steers found themselves as district opponents against some of Brownwood’s toughest teams. During that span, Graham managed only five wins to the vaunted Lions. Possibly the greatest of that era came in 1975 when the Steers took a 31-29 victory in Brownwood, a massive victory considering the Lions had the best coach in the state at the time, one of the best teams and Graham was the smallest 3A school in Texas. Between 1986 and 2013 the Steers and Lions have faced each other 11 times, and of those meetings, the Steers have only won three games. In Graham’s 2009 season, their best to date, Graham lost to Brownwood 28-27 in a district game that went down to the wire. Graham hadn’t won consecutivegames against the Lions since the 1950s, that is, until their dominant performance Friday night. The 41-point margin of victory was the second biggest in the rivalry’s history. Brownwood’s 56-13 rout in 1973 still holds that record, but never before have the Steers outplayed the Lions so thoroughly.
Bryan Waggoner, owner of Waggoner Supply and 1974 Graham High School graduate, still remembers playing in that game. “The main thing I remember was being outmatched,” Waggoner said. “They always had twice as many kids, the best facilities and all that.” However, Waggoner does recall that the Steers were doing pretty well against the bigger and stronger Lions in the first half. “The way it played out, they scored and we came right back down the field and scored,” Waggoner said. “They scored again, and wecame back and scored. It was 14-13 at the half. It was a big shock to be that close. They came out in the second half and blew us away.” Not surprisingly, the Steers’ win Friday night was somewhat cathartic for Waggoner and his classmates, many of whom watched Graham put the hammer down on the Lions.
Friday night, Graham received near-perfect performances in several areas, which led to the one-sided victory. Graham has to be happy to have Ben Davis on their team. He threw for 369 yards with a 69 completion percentage, three touchdowns and no interceptions. It was a performance that netted him a 146 quarterback rating. Another standout was wide receiver Bryce Reeves, who caught three touchdown passes during his eight reception, 217-yard game. Dillon Gonzales got things started with four rushing touchdowns in the opening quarter, and Gonzales finished the day with 102 yards and 20 carries. Of Hunter Baca’s six receptions, two of them could easily be ranked as the two best catches of the season so far. One was a diving, 30-yard grab in which Baca had to work around a defender to get the ball down to the two-yard line, and the other was a six-yard circus catch where Baca trapped the ball against his left calf, took a hit, and still managed to hang on to it. Baca finished the night with 66 receiving yards. Derek Sides had a great night at receiver with 84 yards on five catches. An example of the Steers’ offensive dominance came with about four minutes in the third quarter. The Steers had a 63-yard touchdown pass to Landon Gonzales called back because of a questionable chop block penalty. Graham replaced Gonzales with Reeves and ran the exact same play for a 78-yard touchdown. Though the Steers offense continually punished the Lions, the Graham defense deserves equal credit in the win. Graham allowed 18 rushing yards on 17 carries. That statistic alone deserves “player of the game” consideration for the whole defense. Cornerback Hagen Hughes led the team with 11 tackles, sophomore linebacker Bohner Cottongame had a breakout game with eight tackles, several of which resulted in a loss of yardage for the Lions. Dustin McWhorter and Landon Gonzales each had six tackles, and Jesse Ramos recorded the only sack of the game. Weston Womack, Spur Hearne and McWhorter each forced a fumble, and Womack was able to recover two of those three. It was a one-sided game from start to finish for a team that was enforcing their will on every single play. “You always strive to be as good as you can possibly be,” offensive coordinator Casey Dacus said. “I thought our execution was pretty good tonight. Last year everybody kind of played us in their base defense. They really didn’t try to take anything away.” Dacus said that teams have been stacking the box against the Steers in an effort to stop running back Dillon Gonzales, and this has left opportunities for Ben Davis and the receiving corps in the passing game with one-on-one coverages.
Now, the Steers will need to prepare for what will undoubtedly be one of their toughest regular season opponents in the Abilene Wylie Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have a consistent winning history of their own, and last season they handed Graham their only regular-season loss. Dating back to 1984, Graham has played Wylie 26 times, and the two have faced each other at least once a season since 2002 with Graham winning five of the 14 games in that span. Though the Bulldogs are a formidable opponent, 2013 may be a good year for the Steers to put another “W” in the win column for several reasons, one being that the Steers are simply playing exceptional football. They’ve scored more than 50 points in each of their two games this season, while the defense has been an almost impenetrable force for long periods of time. That being said, Wylie is a better team than Mineral Wells or Brownwood, even though they started their season with a 38-0 loss to Argyle, possibly the best team in all of 3A. Wylie quickly regrouped to beat Bridgeport 38-6 last week, and Steers head coach Kenny Davidson has nothing but respect for their ability to be highly competitive every season. “‘Reload’ is a great word to describe what Wylie is able to do year in and year out,” Davidson said. “Sure, they lost a lot of guys last season. Then, you look at their roster and it is all juniors and seniors. The system they have in place is just phenomenal.” Davidson said that people should not be fooled by Wylie’s opening game loss, and he maintains that this is one of the most dangerous teams on the Steers’ schedule. For general fans of high school football, this will be one of the closest matchups of the week, and hopefully, Graham can put another historic game in the record books at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Newton Field.

A little article from the paper about last weeks game and this weeks game.

Worth their ranking? Rankings mean nothing to me at this point in the year. A win this week and another deep playoff run is all I want to see. And the state championships run thru Navasota and Ville until proven otherwise.

Lol. Hey, just having some fun with you guys. I still am a Brownwood fan. Maroon is still in my blood. Nothing has changed about that. It can't. When you play for a program that rich in tradition, it doesn't just leave. I'll support them til the day I die. It's kinda funny if you think about it though. I've actually lived in the Ville much longer than I did in Brownwood, even though I went to high school there. I was only there for 5 years, 9-12 then a year after in college. I've been in the Ville for 17. Beleive me, it took almost the entire 17 years living here to get to where I could muster supporting the Ville full fledge. I just couldn't keep confusing my kids anymore. Anyway, here's to a great game this Friday. I honestly think Graham will have a great game but wouldn't surprise me one bit if Wylie comes out with the W.

First of all, the Noodle Poodles are undefeated, we have blown out Bunger and Megargel. So watch it mister. Don't worry about how Wylie will play 12 players, not too many coaching staffs can pull it off and get away with it. The sad thing is, that I will be able to tell who you guys are at the game, because you will be the one's counting the number of players every play.

Being a "broadcast Journalist", my partner and I are always looking for "cool names" of the opposing teams. The best name we have ever come accross in 15 yrs of radio was a kid that played for Graham a few years back named Pecos McCool. Awesome. However, I just saw the Graham roster and the name "Husky Melendez" is pretty cool. That young man had no chance of growing up to be anything other than a nose guard. At 5'11 275, I think he was properly named.

From reading all of your posts, I'm gettin' mighty homesick to go see my Argyle Eagles, lol. It's just a fer piece of highway to be travelin' this early in the year. Ima thinkin' them Graham Steers fans have every right to be expectin' their native sons to do the damage tonite in a big way....and them Wylie Bulldoggie fans to be expectin' nothing but a supreme effert outta their boyz as well. So y'all have yurselves a mighty big time tonite under them Graham lights....these are special times. Good luck to all.

With that name I'm guessing it wasn't exactly a Copper Creek like experience that you Wylie folks are used to was it?

Being a "broadcast Journalist", my partner and I are always looking for "cool names" of the opposing teams. The best name we have ever come accross in 15 yrs of radio was a kid that played for Graham a few years back named Pecos McCool. Awesome. However, I just saw the Graham roster and the name "Husky Melendez" is pretty cool. That young man had no chance of growing up to be anything other than a nose guard. At 5'11 275, I think he was properly named.

Husky is a beast for sure, and as nice a guy as you'll meet!!! And Pecos is still around!!

I think we had more penalty yards than Wylie had offensive yards.

Congrats to Graham. Good team, great secondary... get the mistakes and penalties under control and you'll go far. We (understatement) have a lot of work to do...

Sounds like Graham is kinda like I thought they'd be in this game, and for this season. Now you guys have a "good" win under your belts. Of course, every win is a big one, and helps the team gain that much more confidence.

Solid win for Graham, but the O-line has got to get better! Wylies D-line gave us fits all night. Some very hard hitting went on in this*game along with a lot of penalties. This game could have been worse if the pick 6 Graham had wouldn't have been called back. We wasted a lot of good field position on bad penalties. Overall though a pretty good effort against a gritty Wylie team!

Most games have some plays either called back or penalties called that have an impact on the final score, Deuce. It happens nearly every week in our Argyle games as well. That kinda comes with the territory. Some games more than others....some none at all. But when the opponent is competitive, those plays stand out more.

...Wylies D-line gave us fits all night...Mostly our right DE #89. He ate your LT up--until ya'll started double teaming him (and frequently holding him). Baylon is a 6'4", 240 lb specimen and can run (frequently plays TE on offense). A Junior and already getting some serious D1 looks. Very quiet and gentle guy off the field... a beast on it.

I was at the game and your right we held a few times and got called for it. Our defensive ends were held a lot and never got called for it.

Our defensive ends were held a lot and never got called for it.Maybe we teach proper holding technique better than ya'll LOL... trust me--ya'll got away with holding (obvious) more times than I could count--like nearly every play on our #89. Water under the bridge now--ya'll won, you had the better team and executed your game plan better than we did. Nothing but respect for the Steers.
After facing both and seeing each in action, I would pay to watch a matchup between Graham and Argyle. Argyle is much better in the trenches, has Sadler (one man high light reel) and can run and throw equally well. Graham has a better precision passing game and an exceptional defensive backfield. Would be a classic...
