SWEENY — A third quarter surge allowed the Sweeny Bulldogs to pull away from a gutsy Aldine Davis team that had no seniors on its squad.

A second-year program from Houston, the Falcons just could not contain a daunting slot-T attack by the Bulldogs on Friday.

With more than 400 yards on the ground, it took three third-quarter touchdowns as the Bulldogs beat the Falcons, 56-40 in a non-district matchup Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

The win gives Sweeny an early 2-0 record, and from all indications it seems the slot-T has taken hold in Sweeny.

Leading 30-28 at the half, it took Sweeny just one play to extend that lead as junior Anthany Simmons ran past the Davis defense for a 60-yard romp into the end zone as he went in untouched.

It was Simmons’s second score of the night as he also had a 42-yard score in the first half.

The Bulldog defense, who had a hard time with the Falcon offense in the first half, most notably with junior quarterback Anthony Malone and junior tailback Ryan Lexington Thomas, made a big stop on the Falcons’ first possession of the second half.

It took Sweeny four plays as Hermand Holmes got his first carry of the game and he promptly went in from the 22 yard line. Just like that the Bulldogs had a bit of breathing room, 42-28 with 8:29 remaining in the third period.

Sweeny got to score once more in that third quarter, this time with Holmes going in from 76 yards out. After the two-point conversion from Cody Erikson on a pass from Dorland Fields, the Bulldogs led 50-28.

Davis scored twice more, but the deficit was too much for them to overcome in an almost four-hour contest.

Sweeny’s run game finished with 460 yards as three running backs broke the 100-yard barrier. Simmons led the way with 11 carries for 152 yards and two touchdowns; Fields followed with 21 carries for 141 yards and three touchdowns and Holmes with just four carries for 111 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

There were two ties and two lead changes in the first half as both teams combined for 58 points with the Bulldogs holding a two-point lead, 30-28.

Sweeny ran the ball 27 times for 220 yards with Zedrick White and Simmons scoring a touchdown each.

Junior quarterback Anthony Malone led Davis, and he also scored twice but ran the ball for 157 yards on 10 carries. Included in those carries were runs of 20 and 68 yards. No paws touched Malone on either one of those scampers into the end zone.

The speedy quarterback was held to just 30 yards in the second half as he totaled 187 yards and three touchdowns.

Sweeny will host Brazosport at Bulldog Stadium on Friday.

The article forgot another kid, Cody Erickson who ran some last night as well and the fact that another RB Jamarkus Averhart did not play.
