SWEENY — Taking on Aldine Davis, the Sweeny Bulldogs will try to defend the home turf at Bulldog Stadium on Friday night.

The second-year Falcons (1-0) and Bulldogs kickoff at 7:30 p.m. as the Bulldogs will attempt to make it a 2-0 start to the season.

Sweeny is coming off a performance with 377 yards rushing in first-year coach Paul Kilby’s slot-T offense. Kilby was impressed with last week’s win over Bay City (48-27), but says the team has room for improvement.

“The players have really bought in,” he said. “They are working on what they need to work on, and there is improvement.”

The win against Bay City gives Sweeny a 6-0 record in the last six openers.

“We don’t really know a lot about this team, but they look big and fast,” Kilby said. “They run the spread offense, which is similar to Bay City, so we won’t have to change much about our approach on defense.

“It is really too early in the year to change much,” he said. “We mostly need to show improvement in what we’ve been working on. We need to play ‘til the whistle echoes, have clean exchanges and move the ball.

“On defense we need to stop the quarterback,” Kilby said.

The Bulldogs also need a mistake-free kicking game, Kilby said.

The Bulldogs got some great performances on both sides of the ball in the opener, especially in the running game. One of the keys to Sweeny’s success against Bay City was senior running back Dorland Fields, who rushed for 120 yards on 20 carries with three touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff 87-yards for a score.

But he wasn’t the only one to go past the 100-yard plateau as Anthany Simmons ran for 110 yards on 12 carries to average 9.17 a carry. Dante Lemons also added 82 on the ground and Jamarkus Averhart had 46 yards.

On defense, junior Dallas Blackstock had two interceptions, returning each one for 39 yards. The defense still gave up 357 yards to the Blackcats, including 210 through the air and 147 on the ground.

Aldine Davis took care of business against Hugh Boyd from Canada, winning the game 58-0. Falcons coach James Showers said it was in large part due to his running back Lex Thomas and his defense, which did not allow a score all game.

The young football program will be looking to make a name for themselves against Sweeny, Showers said.

“They are a powerhouse 3A school with a new offense and a new coach,” Showers said. “This is a good opportunity for us to see how good we really are. They have a great running game, and our defense will have to find a way to stop it.”
