The Tigers will have a short week of preparation with the Thursday night contest. In addition, Monday was Labor Day. Although the team worked out Monday, the schedule was a little different since there were no classes that day.

“The Thursday game and the holiday makes it a double whammy,” Wharton Coach Tim Finn said.

Finn said the normal preparation schedule will move up a day, and the Monday and Tuesday workouts went a little longer than normal.

Finn said Scarborough has a big offensive and big defensive line, as well as a good linebacker and skilled kids who can run. But since it’s a non-district game, Finn doesn’t concentrate that much on the opponent.

“We use the game to make ourselves better,” Finn said. “It’s more about us getting better than the opponent.”

Scarborough enters the game with an 0-1 record after losing its season opener last Thursday to Houston Lee.

Meanwhile, the Tigers opened the year with an exciting 23-22 victory over Cuero at Tiger Stadium.

“Beating Cuero on your first game is a very satisfying win,” Finn said. “We played very well for three quarters and then held on to win.”

Finn said he was pleased with the play of two newcomers who took the place of key leaders last year — quarterback Joseph Kreneck and kicker Eluid Guajardo. Kreneck completed 14 of 19 passes in his first start.

“The offense threw the ball well,” Finn said. “We had a good night throwing and catching.”

Finn added that the two running backs combined for 100 yards rushing and that the offense had a balanced look running and passing.

Guajardo connected on a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter when a Tiger drive stalled, giving him his first points on the varsity.

“It was very nice for him to get a field goal in his first game,” Finn said. “From that point on, he kicked off well. He did a good job with field position.”

Finn said he was pleased that all three phases of the game — offense, defense and special teams — came out prepared to play.

The coach also praised the play of Taylor Skinner.

“He had a heck of a night,” Finn said. “He had two touchdowns. He forced two fumbles. He saved another touchdown. He had 10 tackles.

“He had a pretty stellar night.”
