SAN ANTONIO — Since 2006, the Navarro Panthers have played in seven games that were determined by a margin of two points or less.

Four of those games have been against the San Antonio Christian School (SACS) Lions.

The teams will continue their rivalry on Friday night when Navarro (1-0) journeys to Lion Stadium in San Antonio for a non-district contest.

SACS (0-1) and Navarro have met every year since 2008. Of those five meetings, the teams were separated by more than two points only once — a 49-19 Panther victory in 2009.

Navarro head coach Les Goad said the tightness of those games is no coincidence.

“Both are well-prepared, evenly-matched teams,” he said. “The staffs get them ready to play and make adjustments while staying within their own philosophies.”

Last year’s contest at Erwin-Lee Field was typical of the series. The teams combined for almost 800 yards of total offense, with the Panthers, who have won three of the five meetings, holding off a late rally to take a 36-34 victory.

The Lions will be happy to know that Zane Conlin, who ran for 201 yards in that game, has now graduated from Navarro. Likewise, Panther defenders must be delighted that Cory Robinson, who caught nine passes for 160 yards and four touchdowns in last year’s game, is now running pass patterns for Notre Dame.

SACS also lost seven starters on each side of the ball from their 2012 district-championship team. The Lions are off to an 0-1 start after falling to Austin St. Michael’s 32-24 last Friday — a game they led at halftime.

Goad does not see a big drop off from previous SACS teams that gave his squad fits.

“They can work on their offense year round because they don’t have the same practice restrictions as public schools,” he said. “So their kids have their offense down regardless of experience.

“And they have a lot of athletic and solid players on both sides of the ball.”

The Lions have moved last year’s quarterback, Turner Goudge, to slot back and now line up Andrew Hawkins behind center.

Goudge was the team’s leading rusher last week with 68 yards on 12 carries, while Hawkins completed 14 passes on 27 attempts with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Goad said the opposition’s scheme is “similar to before,” with the Lions operating out of the spread formation.

“They try to balance between the pass and the run,” he said. “They have a very efficient passing game but will throw deep because they have a lot of good receivers.

“We will have to put pressure on their quarterback and bottle him up so he can’t scramble. We also cannot afford to let them run the ball effectively.”

Defensively, the Lions run a 3-3 Stack, though Goad expects they will show a five-man front against his run-heavy offense. He said they are more active and aggressive than a year ago. He is especially impressed with middle linebacker Logan Waters, whom he says is “real tall and a good athlete who comes to the ball really well.”

While the Panthers ran up 461 yards rushing on the Lions’ defense last year, the story was different in 2011. In its 10-8 victory in that game, SACS held Navarro to its second-lowest point total since the end of the 2007 season.

The Panthers are coming off a 27-21 victory last week over Antonian. Goad said he liked what he saw on both sides of the ball in that game, especially that Navarro did not turn the ball over. He did say he is concerned about the eight penalties the Panthers were called for on the night.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

PANTHER NOTES: When linebacker Jake Wright took the field last week, he became the first freshman to start a game for Navarro since 1999. Two other freshmen — Tanner Law and Jared Leal — also saw action in the game.

Running backs Luke Jaroszewski (108) and Jay Leal (106) each topped the 100-yard rushing mark last week. It was the 13th straight game in which the Panthers have had at least one rusher gain more than 100 yards on the
