GERONIMO — The field was new but the result was customary as the Navarro Panthers grinded out a 27-21 victory over the Antonian Apaches Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
It was the Panthers’ first home game on artificial turf and they broke it in with their trademark rushing attack, rolling up 299 yards on the ground. Running backs Luke Jaroszewski and Jay Leal led the way with 108 yards and 106 yards rushing, respectively.
Navarro also controlled the football, running 57 plays to Antonian’s 37.
Panther senior cornerback James Eveld said his team got exactly what they needed.
“You can’t win them all if you don’t win the first one,” he said. “I thought we played great on both sides of the ball and we’re always happy when we win.”
The Apaches got on the scoreboard first, taking the game’s opening series 66 yards in eight plays. Running back Roland Salazar ended the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run.
Navarro answered quickly, driving 67 yards in just over three minutes. Jaroszewski keyed the drive with a 21-yard run, followed by a 17-yard run from Jay Leal. Quarterback Ty Durham ran it into the end zone from the 1-yard line and Eric Hinklemann added the extra point to pull the Panthers even at 7-7.
The Panther defense held Antonian to three-and-out on their next series. A short punt gave Navarro the ball at the Apaches’ 22-yard line.
They took advantage of the short field. Jaroszewski scored on the fifth play of the drive on a 4-yard run for his first career touchdown. The kick failed, leaving Navarro’s advantage at 13-7.
The Panthers defense held the Apaches to three-and-out for the rest of the half. They only permitted Antonian to gain 12 yards of offense in the first half after their initial possession.
Offensively, Navarro would manage one more score before the break. Taking over at their own 30-yard line with just 1:17 remaining, the Panthers gained 16 yards before a holding penalty forced them backwards.
But a 16-yard run by running back Evan Deleon was followed by a 26-yard pass from Durham to Jaroszewski that set the Panthers up at the Antonian 15-yard line. A defensive interference call moved the ball to the Apaches’ 2-yard line.
Two plays later, Leal crossed the goal line on a 1-yard run with just 13 seconds left in the half. The two-point attempt came up just short and the Panthers took a 19-7 lead into the locker room.
Navarro head coach Les Goad said the last score was “huge.”
“I felt like we really, really needed to find a way to score then,” he said. “The main play was the long pass to Jaroszewski. We had set that up and got him wide open along the sideline.”
With the Panthers getting the ball first to start the second half, they looked to be in a position to blow the game open. But penalties prevented that. On two series in a row, they had first downs wiped out by flags that proved to be drive-enders.
Meanwhile, Antonian started to find some room on the ground, led by running back Daniel Rosenfeld. He led them on a 46-yard drive, which he capped with a 12-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-2.
With the lead down to five points and the momentum shifted, Navarro’s offense needed one of the long scoring drives area fans have learned to expect from it. That is precisely what the Panthers got.
Taking over with 39 seconds left in the third quarter, they marched 75 yards in 12 plays and chewed up seven minutes in the process. A 32-yard run by Leal got the drive started and a 4-yard run on fourth-and-3 by Deleon kept the drive alive.
The touchdown came on a 5-yard run by Jaroszewski, who also added the two point conversion to give his team some breathing room.
But the Apaches did not quit. They responded with a 4-yard touchdown run with 2:32 remaining in the game, cutting the Panther lead to 27-21.
The Panthers recovered an onside kick attempt on the ensuing kickoff, however, and then ran out the clock for their first victory of the season.
Goad said he was satisfied with the win but knows his team has work to do.
“I was really pleased, considering how young we are and how much of a quality program Antonian has,” he said. “I especially liked that we didn’t turn the ball over.
“But at the same time I see a lot of things that we need to improve on. We’ve got to cut out the mental mistakes, like the penalties.”
The Navarro victory avenges a 35-21 loss to Antonian in last season’s opener. The team had focused on not repeating the bad start they got off to last year, according to Goad.
The Panthers will next hit the road for San Antonio where they will face the San Antonio Christian School Lions. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
