Well that would be a treat toddg. Just FYI... Aledo was tough last year! When are they not a tough opponent? They're always tough and you can always count on the Sville vs Aledo match ups to be entertaining. It's in their house this year. My $ on the Ville but you never know. But it will be a good game.

I'd love to see Stephenville defeat the Bearkats of 4A fame. You didn't exactly tell us where this game will be played. In my mind this game should be considered a toss-up due to the history between the 2 schools. Stidham will have to bring his best game this week, but maybe he's not ready yet....I dunno. Can the rest of the Yellowjackets help take up some of the slack til he starts hitting on all cylinders....I dunno. Does Stephenville's defense have enough to stop the Aledo offense this season....I dunno. Is Aledo better this season than last season....I dunno. Guess what...there's a lot of things not known yet about either team. You just gotta figure it will be a good game because of the history of the two schools and their programs. Go get em Yellowjackets.....hooray for 3A.

Stephenville @ Aledo Friday 9/6, 7:30 KO

Ville bounced back from a 10 point loss to Prepa Tec last season and beat Aledo who was favored. We'll see how the Jackets respond from a very physical 1 pt win this year. You're right regal, a lot of unknowns so far. How good is Prepa Tec? How good is Ville? How good is Aledo? Ville plays 6A Ft. Lauderdale (Florida) Dillard High in week 2. Aledo plays Highland Park tonight, then Monterrey Prepa Tec week 2, I think.

We'll find out in the next few weeks how each team is. That's a fact Jack! ;)

After the 1 point win that tells me the Ville may be better this year than last. As far as this game, I believe it will be a close game with the Ville winning it in the last minutes of the game. The O line of the Ville will determine this game. Just my 2 cents worth.

There were a couple of plays last year that were called back that would have made the game closer. I think it be a one possession game if we progress offensively from week 1 to 2 like we did last year. It will be a tall task to go into bearcat stadium and win. We hold one of only 2 victories in that place and that was earned back in 2007.

Aledo is alot better on offense this year with the additions of a couple of Big lineman and QB/RB Ryan Newsome..and the switch from LB to RB Daythan Davis..who is big (6'2" 225lbs)..and Anders is still back there as well.

This should be good. Early assessment looks to be Ville's defense looks to be better this season. More overall speed. A little harder to gauge how good against the 11 time national champs of Mexico and how it translates to Texas HS football. :D

Aledo is always a good test.

Well it's like this.....I'm all for 3A #2 putting a whooping on 4A #2 any day of the week. Whether that be Stephenville vs. Aledo or whomever else it happened to be. I'm really not in love with the Yellowjackets, per se......but this is outright pride on the line>>>>3A pride. So I hope the Yellowjackets will represent well this Friday nite against those highly ranked and talented Bearkats from Aledo. In this case, a win for Stephenville will be a win for 3A. It will be tough sledding, but if there's a 3A team that can get the job done against Aledo, I reckon it's the Yellowjackets. Put the stinger on em.

Yall shouldn't put much stock into the Jackets starting slow. Coach G is only 2-4 in season openers yet his teams have made it to at least the 4th round 4 out of last 5 years. Last year the offense struggled just as much against Mexico and then came out after that and lit it up. I haven't seen the tape yet, that will be tomorrow but it is my experience that 9 times out of 10 it is an execution (rhythm) issue. The talent is there it is just a matter of how long it will take to get it all on the same page.

Lets put some perspective into this, last year the state champs managed 259 yards of total offense with 3 turnovers and 17 pts against MT. Aledo was coming off a dominant performance against HP (31-12). I not gonna lie the Jacket OL struggled in that first game, whatever it was they figured it out the next week in practice and the rest is history. Fast forward to today, the 2013 Jackets managed 298 yds of total offense 2 turnovers and 17 pts against MT and Aledo dominated HP even worse. What will happen this go around? We will all find out Friday.

Besides I have been watching this series long enough to know, that it is fools gold to try and predict what will happen. There has been several times where I thought one was better than the other and the opposite result happened.

It looks to be a daunting task for the more inexperienced Yellow Jackets according to the blog below. But one thing that has been evident throughout the history of the series between Aledo and Stephenville is the fact that over the course of 14 games played between the two, each game has the atmosphere of a playoff game and most often lives up to the hype. Both teams and communities rise to the occasion of the competition. Whether one is heavily favored over the other going into the game, it doesn't always end how most think. Last year’s game is proof. These games are worth the penny regardless if you support Aledo or Stephenville or neither.

Is this the Best Senior Bearcat Class in the Tim Buchanan Era at Aledo?

Coach Tim Buchanan is in his 21st season as Bearcats head coach. He has amassed 212 wins and graduated 20 senior classes in his tenure at Aledo. Included in the 212 wins are 55 playoff victories, four state championships, 17 straight seasons in the playoffs, and a perfect 16-0 season in 2010.

The motto of the 2012 season was called the “Reload Mode”. Indeed it was having to replace a senior-heavy Senior Class of 2011 coming off three straight Class 4A Division II state championships.

The Senior Bearcats of 2011 were top heavy on offense with Matt Bishop, Johnathan Gray, Michael Mann and Michael Wilson all playing college football now. The defense had a mix of seniors and underclassmen led by Dayne Davis, now playing at Harvard.

Looking over the roster of the 2013 Aledo Bearcats, this squad may have the most overall talent from top to bottom than any senior class coached by Tim Buchanan.

The defensive side of the ball had only one underclassman, Johnathan Durham, starting on Saturday against Highland Park. The offense started seven seniors and four underclassmen. Only two offensive starters are juniors, Luke Bishop and Ryan Newsome. It is extremely rare for the Bearcats to start offensive linemen who are not at least in the junior class. Aledo started two from the same family Saturday night in freshman Wes Harris and sophomore Hunter Harris.

Since 17 of Aledo’s 22 starters against the Scots are seniors this season, a case is being made for at least this Bearcat team being the most dependent on a senior class as starters on a fantastic team.

My hunch is this group of seniors feels like they have something to prove in Friday night’s home opener against Stephenville. The Yellowjackets have stung the Bearcats two years in a row on their home field by a combined score of 89-75.

Especially for the senior starters on defense, this is their third and final crack at bringing home a victory over Stephenville. They will help to right the ship at Bearcat Stadium Friday night.

Aledo has seven varsity defensive starters earning their third varsity letters. Jordan Mittie and Tyson Mauser at linebacker; Zach Hyles, Cory Stitle, and Ray Hart up front; and Brock Parker and Jonny Carter in the secondary.

Jonny Carter had a dynamic game against the Scots breaking up passes, returning kicks, and racing to the end zone on a blocked punt on special teams. If you recall, Carter was injured early in last year’s game against Stephenville and the Yellowjackets exploited his side of the field when he was gone.

Aledo’s all-senior defensive line and linebacker corps were the difference makers in Aledo’s 44-3 victory over Highland Park. Besides the seniors listed above, Tristan Stary started on the line and Matthew Hawkins started at linebacker.

The much larger Highland Park offensive line could not contain the stealth, quick, and strong Bearcats up front. After a couple of series, the Scots started keeping backs in to block but it did very little to stop the relentless Bearcat pass rush. When the starters left the game late in the third quarter, Highland Park had negative rushing yards in the game.

Yes it’s early in the season and this Bearcat senior class has only one victory under its belt. The one victory and the way this senior class of Bearcats dominated a state-ranked team is at least a way to start a conversation.

As for Stephenville vs Aledo, I hope so. It's games like this that make each other better win or lose. It's a win win IMO.

Second season is what really counts until the third season starts. A repeat is in line for Stephenville. '93 SC was followed by a '94 repeat. '98 SC was followed by a '99 repeat. Let's see if history stays it's course. :D

I don't see the ville keeping this a close game! Aledo whooped Highland park! Their RB is supposed to be another J.Gray! But if the ville pulls this one out not only will I eat my words but that means the ville is the real deal!

HP isn't their normal strength this year. Even Aledo fans said they were much softer this year than last. Too much finess and not enough hard nose. This is erie how many are giving Aledo such a huge advantage over Stephenville again this year. Naive I guess.

State-ranked rivals square off in Aledo By BRAD KEITH brad.keith@empiretribune.com Stephenville Empire-Tribune

As long as they are in separate classifications, their days of meeting twice a year - in the regular season and again in the playoffs - are over.

No longer will they settle district championships, as they did seemingly each year from 2003-07. No longer will they play state playoff games with the winner instantly becoming the favorite to capture a state title, as they did each season from 2009-11.

But it's still Stephenville. And it's still Aledo. And sixth year Stephenville head coach Joe Gillespie still expects a war come 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bearcat Stadium.

The rivals are meeting for the eighth time in five years, this time with both ranked No. 2, Aledo in 4A and Stephenville in 3A. Stephenville won 41-28 at home last year, but last won at Aledo in 2007 when Gillespie was still the Yellow Jackets' linebackers coach.

Aledo won three straight championships in 4A Division II from 2009-11, eliminating Stephenville from the playoffs each time. The Jackets also won a 48-47 home thriller to open the 2011 season, but lost openers in Aledo in 2009 and 2010. Aledo has won six of the last eight meetings, and the powers have evenly split 14 meetings since 2002.

"I know Aledo almost as well as I know us, and I'm sure (Aledo head coach Tim Buchanan) would tell you the same thing the other way around," Gillespie said. "I know they are very well coached, they are extremely sound and their kids play hard. I like to think that's what people would tell you about Stephenville, too."

This time around it's Stephenville that's fresh off a state championship and Aledo seeking revenge.

"I know Coach Buc and his kids haven't forgotten last year," said Gillespie of the night his Jackets built a 35-14 lead and cruised past the Bearcats to touch off what is now a 14-game win streak. "They remember, and I'm sure they are eager to wipe that taste out of their mouths. I like playing Aledo once each year instead of twice, but because you only play once, the winner gets those bragging rights for a whole year and the loser has to live with it for the next year."

Aledo made quite the impression in its season opener, blowing away traditional power Highland Park 44-3 in the Tom Landry Classic at SMU Saturday.

"They are as good as the score indicates," Gillespie said. "People talk about maybe HP isn't as good this year, but I think a lot of that was Aledo making them look that way. HP is good year after year."

Gillespie says there isn't one area of Aledo's team that impresses him more than another.

"When you watch film the real question you ask yourself is 'Where are they weak?'" he said. "They're just solid all over the field. They're offensive line may be a little green, but they're huge and they did a great job against HP."

Aledo allowed just 38 rushing yards and 177 yards total against Highland Park, which is typically an offensive juggernaut. The Bearcats intercepted two passes and Zach Hyles was named defensive MVP with a sack and three tackles behind the line.

The offensive MVP in the Landry Classic was Daythan Davis, a 225-pound running back who converted to offense this season and rushed for 111 yards and three scores. They also picked up 74 yards rushing, 34 yards passing and a 14-yard catch from versatile quarterback and receiver Ryan Newsome, a move-in from L.D. Bell.

The Bearcats also picked up turnover-free play from junior quarterback Luke Bishop in his first start. The younger brother of three-time state champ Matt Bishop was 15-22 passing for 153 yards. He hit Taco Anderson eight times for 89 yards.

Aledo even appears to have solidified its kicking game that has cost the Bearcats in the past. Parker Shaunfield made three short field goals last week, and was 5-for-5 on extra points.

Gillespie said Aledo continues to be a barometer of where his own team is.

"Aledo, just like Stephenville, is a huge measuring stick for your program," Gillespie said. "You can play outstanding and beat a team like Aledo and it gives you momentum that could carry you a long way. But you can also lose to a team like Aledo, or a team like Stephenville, and learn a lot and get better because of it."

Gillespie expects Stephenville to be better Friday than the Jackets were in their 17-16 win over Prepa Tec Monterrey (Mex.) last week.

"We have to be, because that's the formula. You have to improve each week," he said. "Last year we were a completely different team game two than we were game one. The first game is where you learn the most about yourself, because you're finally doing everything full speed with no quick whistles or coaches on the field to correct things in real time.

"I know we learned a lot about our football team, and I know we've had a good week of practice correcting things we did wrong and continuing to improve on the things we did well. We will be a much better football team Friday. Will that be enough to beat Aledo? I guess we'll see Friday night."

21-7
Half.
So far there has been a fumble called against stephenville when the runner was on his back, a non-fumble called against aledo when the runner was still on his feet, a 4th and long complete pass called when aledo wr was 2 steps out of bounds, a thrown punch by aledo player that didn't draw a flag, and a blatant clip/tackle as a sville defender got near the aledo qb. The last play resulted in dead ball fouls against both teams.
So far aledo has not committed a penalty.

I agree with vtskneb... one series Ville looks unstoppable, the next look like its their first game. That's inexperience coming out. Yes, give credit to a very good Aledo team. But... Ville showed they could move the ball with ease at times and made stops on defense. The inconsistency will get better. Not sure if anyone remembers but it took mid season for the Ville to look polished. This years team has the talent and potential without doubt. It may take until Oct 18th until they hit their stride. Good things to come. Aledo may be the best team the Ville plays all season... Even if Ville were to make it deep again. We'll see.

By the way, Aledo played the dirtiest game I've seen in a while. An OL pulling a soccer flop several times and taking cheap shots behind the refs back. Never have seen an OL do a soccer flop! Lol

This Aledo team has beat this age group from Stephenville from junior high on. They are very talented and very physical. They have a great team and was expected to win. Stephenville had a few bad breaks and a few bad calls but did not determine the outcome by any stretch of the imagination. My hat goes off to Aledo for the hard physical play and the will to win. I expect them to beat every team they play this season and run the table. They have depth at QB and they are loaded with talented kids and great coaching.
Stephenville is a great program and will get things rolling. There are no excuses for what I saw last night. The Same Stephenville fans who love to talk and brag about Stephenville and its football team WALKED OUT. I was ashamed of our fans last night after the score started to get ugly. This is your team and your players and coaches. Support them good or bad win or not. Like Coach G said we got humbled and that is a fact but most importantly we got weak when our kids needed us the most. It's not like you had to beat the traffic or whatever excuse you want to throw out there. Put the shoe on the other foot and not one fan would have left early had we been up by 40. I hope the coaches use this to show the players that we don't believe in them and they become stronger for it. Remember that we got inexperience all over the field and just because we as fans and coaches want to win don't mean it's going to happen overnight. Show some respect for the coaches and players is how I see it.

I anticipate them to turn it around but fans leaving early during a six score variance at a stadium notorious for having horrible traffic leaving is not something anyone should apologize for. Aledo had less fans in the fourth than we did. Stephenville fans have left early under both occasions many times over the last 10 years. Winning cures all and right now everyone's nerves are sensitive. Those boys better not need that to motivate them or forget it the rest of the way. Pride should be all they need to get after it this week.
