Lots of talent. Crapload of over pursuit though. They spread us out 5 wide, and the QB was extremely mobile and good at extending the play and either running or finding the open receiver. Bport was about twice as good as I thought they'd be. They're significantly improved

Damn BPort QB was a beast like I said...

219 passing yards with 3 TDs and 214 rushing yards with another TD.

Meanwhile, WC SOPHOMORE RB Dakarius Bell had 274 yards and 4 TDs....

Like I said... WC D was garbage and the Bport QB is legit.... Bport would've won this game if not for penalties.

Columbia vs Brazosport

By Chris Greene sports@thefacts.com | Posted: Saturday, August 31, 2013 2:00 am

FREEPORT — An annual battle between familiar foes came down to the wire Friday night at Hopper Field in Freeport. Fittingly, it was a turnover that put things to an end.

Columbia held off Brazosport 35-33 in the opening game for both teams, riding the strength of running back Dakarius Bell on offense and forcing turnovers on defense.

Bell scored a touchdown in each quarter of the game and totaled 274 yards on 42 carries. The Roughnecks also recovered three fumbles, and Hunter Grayson’s interception of Brazosport quarterback Emond Hobbs with 15 seconds to play effectively ended the contest.

“It was a great effort on both sides of the ball,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “I am proud of our coaches and our kids. Bell, being a sophomore, did extremely well and a lot of credit needs to go to the offensive line and Brodney Thomas. He blew up their linebackers all night long.”

Despite the interception near the end of the game, Hobbs had a strong outing for the Exporters. He passed for 219 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 216 yards and one score and had an interception while playing defense.

It was Hobbs’ touchdown run and two-point conversion with 4:44 left in the game that brought the Ships within two.
But his lone interception came in desperation time with the Exporters at the Columbia 29.

“They say that early in the season turnovers and special teams’ mistakes will cost you,” Brazosport coach Ben Rudolph said. “We have to do a better job of hanging on to the football and maybe this would be a different story.”

Rudolph said it was a young Exporter team on the field.

“Lots of sophomores who were playing freshman football this time last year grew up a lot tonight,” Rudolph said.

Columbia expanded its lead early in the second half on Bell’s third touchdown run, but a Khalil Myers 44-yard touchdown reception brought the Exporters within 28-19 after the point-after was blocked.

Brazosport’s Jeremiah Credit scored later in the quarter to make it 28-25 following a missed PAT.

Columbia went up 35-25 with 9:19 to play when Bell scored from the 1-yard line.

After his interception to end a later Columbia drive, Hobbs completed an 82-yard pass to Credit to get the Exporters down to the 1-yard line. Hobbs then scored on a run on the next play.

Columbia killed a lot of clock from that point, but the Exporters got the ball back late in the game and went from their own 36 to the Columbia 29 when Grayson came up with the clinching interception.

Columbia held a 21-13 advantage at the half, thanks in part to three Brazosport drives that ended in turnovers.

Credit fumbled at the Brazosport 27 on the first play of the game and Brandon Harris picked up the ball for the Roughnecks. Four plays later, Bell scored his first touchdown with a 10-yard run.

The Exporters responded with a nine-play scoring drive. Jordan Jackson caught a 16-yard pass from Hobbs and the point-after tied the score at 7-7.

Columbia coughed the ball up on its next drive, but Brazosport gave it back on a fumble of its own that ended an 11-play drive just seven yards from the end zone.

Bell capped a 12-play drive with a two-yard run to put the Roughnecks back on top 14-7 early in the second quarter.

After its third turnover — a Caleb Angel fumble following a 35-yard reception from the arm of Jody Virgil — Brazosport held Columbia to three-and-out. The Exporters then scored when Claude Lowe caught a 26-yard pass from Hobbs, but a two-point conversion attempt failed and left the home team down by a point.

Columbia increased the lead to eight with just 16 seconds before the break. Jarius Kesee ran the ball in from the 3 to cap an 11-play drive, and Jacob Comer kicked the PAT.

Two good things here. One, you revealed the work needed to be successful going forward, and two, you won. Congratulations to the 'Necks.

Necks are young but very talented. They will get that defense turned around. I think they have nine sophomores on varsity.
