LA MARQUE — It’s do or die for 7-on-7 football teams that hope to qualify for the upcoming state tournaments.
This weekend, the final qualifying tournaments will be held. Division II teams — those in Class 3A and lower — have a Saturday tournament in Whitney, while Division I teams will have their last gasp at a massive tournament in Houston.
“It’s the biggest tournament in the Houston area because it is a two-day event,” La Marque head coach Mike Jackson said.
The Muscle Milk tournament will be Saturday and Sunday and feature 32 teams, with 16 playing each day in four pools.
Two squads will qualify for the state tournament each day.
The tournament will be held at Houston Amateur Sports Park, 12131 Kirby, Houston, where the Houston Dynamo soccer team practices.
Play will begin at 9 a.m. both days on the complex’s six fields. Semifinals are set for 1 p.m. with the championship games following at 2 p.m.
Four Galveston County teams will be in action at the tournament. Clear Falls, Clear Springs and Dickinson will play on Saturday, while La Marque takes the field Sunday.
La Marque is the only team in Galveston County that has qualified for the state tournament.
“We’re playing in it because we are hosting it,” Jackson said. “We couldn’t qualify even if we hadn’t qualified for state because it is a Division 1 tournament and we are Division 2.”
The tournament has long been associated with the Houston Texans and was played at the team’s practice facility, but when setting playing dates became troublesome, the Houston Dynamo stepped in.
“They have been courting us for awhile,” Jackson said.
The tournament is an attractive one.
“You could sign up on January 28,” Jackson said. “We take the first 32 teams that send their money in. The tournament was filled on February 1. It filled up that fa.”
