I think they should have looked at the cost of buying a new vehicle nowadays, too. Heck, your avg. price for just a middle of the road sedan is $25000+ and for a new truck with all the bells and whistles you can damn near buy a Lexus or Mercedes nowadays.....or a fixer-upper older home. Of course, they raise the msrp and then help you with a factory incentive program that works like a down payment to help more people with the downstroke to qualify for financing, but it's all ficticious movement of dollars just to help sell the vehicles. The bottom line is you are still paying a hefty price (and insurance premiums) for a product that loses half of its original value in just 3 years, on avg. Add in the cost of fuel to run it down the road and you have probably the most expensive cost coming out of your pocket nowadays. At least with a home mortgage you can get a hefty tax break and build some equity....it's an asset. Automobiles are just puredee costs by comparison and hefty ones at that. We all love them, and they account for the way we live our lives, but still you have to take a hard look at the dollars spent by the avg. American on automobiles percentagewise to their total income to get a real grasp on what we spend here in American to drive down the street. I don't know what the numbers are, but my guess is that the vast majority of Americans own a vehicle of some sort and pay alot yearly to have it.

I just borrowed books from friends and got PDFs of the rest and never paid much for books at all throughout my 4 years in college

The online rental sites are always cheaper than renting it from the bookstore as well. I had five books one semester from four different sites on semester. Got one used off Amazon for $1.29 when the bookstore wanted like $80 for it.

Based on the inflation rate that averages about 3% a year it would be normal for consumer goods to increase in price at least that much. The Rule of 72 indicates that at this rate a product should double in price every 24 years..............
