La Marque and Westbury Christian qualify for state tournament.

HITCHCOCK — It didn’t feature the bright lights and chanting crowds of a Friday night game in the fall, but Saturday’s 7-on-7 football tournament at Hitchcock High School saw eight area teams battle it out in a series of all-day, grueling games for two qualifying spots in the Division II state tournament.
After dropping their first game, the La Marque Cougars came back strong, taking home the tournament medal and qualifying for the state competition July 11-12 in Leander.

Westbury Christian nabbed the other qualifying spot. Both teams went 3-1, and the Cougars won a coin-flip to determine the tournament champion instead of playing another game on the long day.
The tournament kicked off at 9 a.m. and drew to a close almost eight hours later, testing players’ endurance and fortitude.
“It’s just our kids digging deep,” head coach Mike Jackson said. “It was a long day.”
This is the third year in a row that La Marque has qualified for the state tournament, but it was an uphill battle this time around.
The Cougars came to Hitchcock short-handed, with three receivers out participating in combines, but Jackson said the team had risen to the challenge.
“We want to win everything we do,” he said.
La Marque has been a running team for the last several years, and Jackson said players were quick to adapt to new roles on offense and defense.
Ladarrian Ellis-Jones, Val Allen and returning all-district safety Reggie Franklin were key to the Cougars’ victory Saturday.
Jackson said playing 7-on-7 was also a great way to prepare for the fall and build up the team.
“We use 7-on-7 to work on our weaker arm,” he said.
The hosting Bulldogs came up short, but Hitchcock will have another chance to qualify for state competition at a tournament in Palacios next week.
High school coaches are prohibited from interacting with players, but family members didn’t hesitate to shout advice from the stands.
But for the most part, players were on their own, calling plays and struggling to get open. A snapper for Lutheran South Academy kept a small playbook in his left hand while he hiked the ball with his right.
As the day wore on, the temperature rose and the sound of distant thunder forced officials to hustle to ensure the tournament finished on time.
After eight grueling hours of play, celebration was muted as the Cougars posed for a group picture, and the Bulldogs trudged
off to the Hitchcock field house.
Any celebration will likely come later, as La Marque prepares for the state tournament and Hitchcock gets another shot at qualifying next week.

Typical garbage from the Galveston Daily News. Several others and I have been volunteering as coaches, drivers, water and ice facilitators, gophers, fundraisers, and mentors for the past few years. And thing about struggling. LEJ threw several nice passes for completions. Perhaps if said writer had gotten up of his butt and come over and asked questions to the people who were there, he'd would have written a more accurate story.

BTW-I emailed this reporter about the inaccuracies here but I've yet to get a response.

Yes sir. Actually got free and made my way down from Houston and watched a little. QB looked good, especially if you throw in the fact he's moving over from TB. Defense looked quick.

Sounds like you and I need to hook up this coming season. You must be the individual Dr. Jax mentioned that made a surprise visit. You would do us an honor by visiting us during one of the broadcasts this season. ;)
