LA MARQUE — Ready or not, it’s time for some football — 7-on-7 style.
La Marque will serve as the south site of the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association’s citywide season-opening tournament for pigskin play today. The action begins at 9 a.m.
“It’s not a qualifier to go to the state tournament, but it’s the kickoff for football for the next year,” La Marque head coach Mike Jackson said.
The tournament is a charitable event.
“All of the proceeds go to the GHFCA’s scholarship fund. Wednesday night, we awarded 12 scholarships,” Jackson said. “The tournament’s a great thing because the kids get to go out and throw the ball around, and it’s a great thing because it helps kids go to college.”
Along with La Marque, other tournament sites include Deer Park, College Park and Cinco Ranch.
Playing at the La Marque High School campus are the Cougars, Friendswood, Clear Springs, Dickinson, Clear Creek, Pearland, Brazosport and Pearland Dawson.
“We need two fields going at one time, so we will be using our practice field and our auxiliary field,” Jackson said.
There is no charge for admission.
“People just bring their lawn chairs and watch the kids,” the coach said.
Texas City will take the field at Deer Park.
The 7-on-7 game is quite a bit different from fall football. Players don’t wear pads, and it is touch football. There also are no down linemen, only the skill position players. The aerial game rules, too.
On the field, the athletes, not the coaches, make all decisions.
“We’re coaching them with what we want done during athletics period in school,” Jackson said. “At these tournaments, the kids have to figure out problems for themselves, because we’re not allowed to coach them.”
