I know this is in the back of the folks at West's mind
Just wondering how they will alter their baseball and softball schedule?
Also when will they get back to having school?

From what I understand, West baseball will play China Spring next Friday. If they win, then there will NOT be a make up game with us because the outcome would not affect the district standings. However, if they lose to CS, then they will at us the next day, TBA.

Their 7v7 group is registered for our SQT tourney. I checked to see where their parent/coach lives and fortunately it was out in the country. We'll give them a couple of weeks and see if they still want to participate in the tourney, and if they do, we'll send their registration money back.

Situation is West... Thier ballfields are on the southside of town and not impacted by the blast. The highschool was not very far from the blast site and sustained damage and is within the DPS perimeter. The primary problem right now is that a large part of the residences are still behind the DPS perimeter and the homeowners are unable to get to their homes. The DPS is supposed to reduce the perimeter slowly this weekend allowing more people to return to their home. From my source who has been working in the perimeter for the past two days, what they will find is pretty much massed distruction. How many of the team members live in this area , I don't know. I do know several of the team member's homes lost all the windows and doors. Rocketman and FBF may have more information on others.

The elementary school was undamaged. They are moving the 4th, 5th and 6th graders to that campus. The 7th and 8th grade is moving to the old Connally middle school campus in Lacy Lackview. I have heard the High School will be reopened on Monday.

Correct, China Spring will play West in China Spring this Friday at 7:00 pm. Special activities to benefit the team and town are being planned for the game.

If Rocketman or FBF have addtional information, please feel free to add.

My wife and MIL drove out to West this morning and just spoke to DPS. They are going to let a limited number of folks back to their homes today. Will probably allow folks 3 blocks deep from Oak street (the main street feeding from I-35 to downtown). These homes have been deemed safe and probably livable. This does not let us even get close to her home near the football field. If the remaining homes are inspected an deemed "safe", those residents will probably be escorted in tomorrow and allowed to remove a limited amount of contents. Those deemed unsafe will be escorted in, but a DPS official will enter the home and get few things. The rest of the contents will remain and the home will be classified unsafe and possibly demolished. That is what we are hearing today.

I was asked earlier, whose Insurance is going to have to pay for this? Im not sure this is covered under a standard home owners policy. I hope that plant had a lot of insurance, because I think they are probably going to need it.

Depending on which carrier a person has their home insurance with - it is my understanding that the "explosion" wording makes this a covered peril...... but then again - there are numerous different policies and all kinds of coverages and exclusions.. If my home was damaged, I'd file a claim under my policy 1st and foremost - let them handle the damages or deny the claim - the carrier will "subrogate" against the fertilizer's GL policy and hopefully they have a Hazardous (is that spelled right?) Spillage/Explosion policy in addition to their GL policy. It's going to be a cluster"you know what" ... and for heaven's sake, DOCUMENT everything - the extra mileage put on your car due to other living arrangements, expenses for temporary lodging, repairs, etc.

I can tell you what ISN'T covered - that is SINKHOLES.. that's some scary stuff now

No. The High School and JR. High will finish the year going to school at the old Connally Middle school campus which is adjacent to Connally High School in Lacy Lakeview. Some of the high school's classes are in the Connally High school campus. They will be going on abreviated schedule with only the required corp course being taught.

Pre-K through 6 are at the elementary campus. Grades 7-12 are at Connally Intermediate and a wing of the Admin building. This will remain for at least the rest of the school year. As far as our sports schedules it will be getting back to as closte to normal as possible. Baseball will be playing Robinson, Thursday night at 7 in West (Varsity Only). We will then play China Spring in CS on Friday. JV at 4:30, V at 7. Softball will be traveling to Temple JC for a best of 3 series vs Taylor. Game 1 on Friday at 7 pm. Games 2/3 will begin Saturday at 1. Regional Track also this weekend. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

Hearing that all football, basketball, and volleyball games for West will have to be played on the road next year. Football field has biomedical hazard waste from all the medical attention that was given on it, along with having no dressing facilities due to damage at 3 of the 4 schools in West ISD. The only gym that is available now is at West Elementary and is not designed for sporting events.

West football was looking so forward to getting a good spring start of football. Had signed up for a number of 7v7 tourney's and were ready to open up their offense. Their AD's house was destroyed. They had already purchased 7v7 uni's, but are in the high school and can't be gotten to. Before we had time to organize and maybe do an "adopt a player" with our group, B&B Sporting Goods in Waco had already started the process of replacing them. Hope they can get things together to continue some sort of off season program.

It was broadcast that the owners only have a 1 million liability policy. Basically a drop in the bucket.

They are hoping to find the cause by May 10th but they said if they can only narrow it down to 2 things it will go listed as "undetermined".

Many are reporting that the local speed freaks were "regulars" at stealing anhydrous ammonia from the site to cook their ****. The locals would call the after hours guy when they'd smell the "leak" and the after hours guy would go and close the valves tampered with by the thieves. Unfortunately the "after hours guy" was killed in the explosion, so he won't be able to testify. Another rumor that there may have been a smaller fire earlier in the day is floating. Many of the people who could testify are dead. God Speed. What a terrible tragedy. Especially if the insurance companies figure out a way to get out of paying. Even hundreds of millions probably wouldn't be enough to cover everything.

Bill,
I'm in if this materialized. Let me know and I'll bring you the money or take it to B&B.
