SNYDER — Entering Day 1 of the District 4-3A meet on Monday, the Wylie boys and girls track and field teams had not been able to celebrate together as district champions for a couple of years. But that all changed Thursday night at Snyder High School, where their fates aligned for the first time since 2010 and both won team titles.

The boys took first place with 148½ points, 16 more than second place Midland Greenwood (132½). On the girls side, 210 points earned the Lady Bulldogs the victory, while Big Spring came in second with 126.

The boys held a four-point lead over Greenwood entering the 1,600-meter relay, the final race of the night. They executed smoothly on exchanges en route to their first-place time of 3 minutes, 27.12 seconds. Greenwood finished fourth with a time of 3:37.1.

“They did a great job,” Lang said, “The kids competed well. We’ve got a tough district. Greenwood really competed well today, Big Spring, Snyder, it’s a tough district.

“It was a long day from this morning at eight o’clock till now, a long day for them. But, it’s a long day for everybody. No excuses. That’s what we came here to do and that’s what we ended up doing. I’m just proud of the kids.”

The Bulldogs received huge boosts from their performances in the 110 hurdles and 400 relay, each of which provided 20 points. In the 110 hurdles, Kyle Dodd and Patrick Walker got out of the blocks side by side and finished that way, with Dodd placing first (14.76) and Walker second (14.89).

Walker also won gold in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.09. He understood the magnitude of the Wylie sweep.

“It’s something we’ve done before but haven’t done for a while,” Walker said. “It’s good to get that streak going again and it’s something we hope to continue over the years.”

His sister Kenzie Walker was a notable performer for the Lady Bulldogs. Aside from running on the first place 400 and 1,600 relay teams, she got the gold in pole vault (10-6) and 100 hurdles (14.6).

Kenzie Walker spoke of the program’s tradition of winning district titles, and said she hopes Thursday’s performance will spark another long streak.

“We had a lot of extra energy this year because we wanted to go out and keep the tradition up,” she said. “A new tradition starts now, and we hope to carry on that tradition for many more years.”

Snyder’s Miccah Wesley was another standout on the track, getting gold in the 100, 200 and 400.

The Lady Bulldogs were aided by sweeping all of the relays. Coach Kerry Hibbitts said there was a little more motivation entering this year’s meet.

“They take that personal,” Hibbitts said of losing to Big Spring last season. “They came ready, focused and competed real well, I thought. The majority had the best times of the year today. I think that was a big part of it. They were just focused and ready to compete.”

The top four finishers in each event will now advance to compete at the area meet April 19 in Pecos. The top three performers there will advance to the Region I-3A meet April 26-27 in Lubbock.
