So I've never been to Lockhart but I've heard so much about their Big 4 BBQ joints....I plan on making a weekend out of it before football season and visiting all 4 establishments...

BUT I think I'll be in San Antonio this weekend and on the way home I was thinking of making a detour and having lunch in Lockhart...

So I need a breakdown of the 4 spots...whats' good at each, etc...I know one place gets mad if you ask for sauce so I need to know this in advance...ya'lls help is appreciated...

City Market in Luling is my favorite. Just a few miles south of Lockhart.

Smitty's Market is the best in Lockhart- Went to Black's in February and brisket was dry.
Also went to Kreutz and it was fair
Luling City Market is great too especially with their sausage and ribs, Barbecue sauce is mustard based and tastes fantastic. Brought a pint home with us. Their potato salad is also top notch

Smity's is best now. It is Kreutz Market of the past. My dad used to take me and my brother to the old Kreutz (Smitty's building now) back in the 60's when only the one side was open with old wood tables lining the wall and knifes to use were chained to the tables. He started me on "hot gut" and a slab of shoulder when I was a young boy and I haven't quit yet! Blacks and Chisum trail does nothing for me. I would go Smitty's and Kreutz in that order.

Luling >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lockhart

I have been to Kreuz's about four times and have never had a good piece of meat. I would agree that Smitty's is the best of Lockhart.

You could also do better than Lockhart by stopping at Cooper's in New Braunfels (or Llano if you're going up 281).

Sausage and ribs at Luling

Ribs and pork chop at Cooper's

I hope Coach Kilby brings BBQ from Smitty's to Sweeny. :2thumbsup

I have been to Black's in Lockhart and was not impressed. It kind of had a tourist trap feel.
I want to try the other Lockhart spots, especially Smity's some time.

Luling City Market is real good. They have a separate pit room inside of the restaurant where you get the meat.
Luling BBQ about a half block south of Luling City Market is worth a stop. The brisket and links are good, and I think
their bbq chicken is pretty good if I remember right. Luling BBQ is open later and City Market is often
closed when I roll through Luling........Luling BBQ ain't a bad alternative.

There are a lot of best places to get bbq in Texas, probably my favorite best place is Coopers in Llano.
Giddings City Meat Mkt is another must stop, get the sausage.

There's a Cooper's in Ft Worth so I've experienced their BBQ already...since I'll likely be passing through on a Sunday it limits my options...Luling City Market isn't open on Sunday from what I heard and Kruez's is closed on Sunday also...maybe it'll be Smitty's....might stop in Elgin at Meyer's and get some sausage to go

I am not sure if their is more than one Elgin sausage. I stopped at what seemed to be a destination bbq spot in Elgin a few years back and I didn't really like the sausage either.
I also saw an Elgin sausage package in HEB and it had grain fillers listed!
Don't know about over that way, but around here, grain fillers in sausage is frowned upon.

I usually stay home with my own cooking. This hit 10th out of 44 teams last week that included the GC from SA Stockshow and the Grilled Chopped Food star. They placed 3rd and 9th in brisket as well!

The Luling City Market BBQ sauce is very simple and easy to make and last a long time!

Matt,

You might as well stop in Taylor and eat at Louie Miller's and Taylor Cafe.

Get the beef ribs at Louie Millers and get the chicken at Taylor Cafe.

Now that you're back in Texas, you'll be wantin' to make a chicken fried steak run, too. There's room for that kinda talk on a whole separate thread, lol.

Coopers in llano is the sh*t
Excellent food and great atmosphere. THOUSANDS of people would disagree with your "review" so you must feel they are all incorrect. It's one thing to prefer some other place, quite another to bad mouth a place just because your prefernces are elsewhere. When I used to fly my own airplane, I flew to Llano more than once just for the BBQ.

Having read many of Saggy's posts, I don't think complimentary was his intent. Saggy can correct me if my thinking is incorrect.
