By Jim Levesque Galveston County Daily News HUNTSVILLE — Defense got the Cougars to the regional tournament, and defense now has the Cougars one win away from the state tournament.
The La Marque boys basketball team shut down the La Vega Pirates’ offense and dominated under the hoop Friday en route to a lopsided 67-51 win in the Class 3A Region III semifinals at Sam Houston State University.
“We knew we needed to stick to our game plan,” La Marque head coach David Montano said. “We had to play tough defense — not give up open 3-pointers and keep them from penetrating, and we had to play big inside and rebound. The guys did a great job.”

La Marque’s guards kept the Pirates from driving the lane and closed out on almost every long-range shot. The Cougars (26-10) allowed only 11 points in the first half and led by 17 at the break.

The Pirates (21-13) never threatened in the final 16 minutes. La Vega fell behind by as much as 23 points in the third quarter and shot 3 for 26 from behind the 3-point arc in the game.

Using a rotation of players spearheaded by Jerome Ward and Al Cury, the Cougars shadowed Austen Bradshaw, La Vega’s top scorer. Bradshaw had only three points in the first half and finished with 25 points in the game, scoring 13 in the fourth quarter with the outcome already decided.

The Cougars’ offense was a balanced, three-headed attack of inside and outside play.

Senior wingman Demun Mercer led La Marque with 18 points. Senior point guard Paris Clayton scored 17 with nine assists and three steals, and senior forward Lawrence Montegut also had 17 points.

“That type of balance is what we want to see,” Montano said. “We don’t want to rely on one guy, and we want to get as many guys as we can involved. When we play like that as a team is when we’re best.”

The La Marque trio of Mercer, Montegut and senior Kwenten Griffin dominated in the paint. Mercer grabbed 17 rebounds, Griffin had 10 rebounds and four blocks to go along with four points, and Montegut pulled down six boards.

“We knew we had the advantage inside and we wanted to use that,” Montano said. “We rebounded like we wanted to and controlled the paint.”

La Marque will return to the Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville today to place top-ranked Houston Yates (30-4) in the regional championship game at 8 p.m. The winner moves on to the state semifinals in Austin.

“We’re in the Elite Eight, just one win away from the state tournament, but now’s not the time to celebrate,” Montano said. “It’s been a great season, but we’re still on a business trip. We know we’re going to have to come out and play our best game to win. That’s what we have to be focused on.”
