Heard great things about Franklins but haven't had a chance to go.

I highly suggest getting there about 830 or 9 am on a saturday that way you are first-20 in line. Franklin is worth every penny. Brisket, ribs, and turkey is where it is at. They cut the brisket and after about 10-15 minutes of sitting on the butcher paper it was still oozing juice.

The newer BBQ place in Giddings has good BBQ, I think it's called Lost Pines ???

I don't go there often because the side dishes are so expensive. I can understand potato salad being a bit pricey because of ingredients and labor, but come on, a quart of beans for like 4 or 5 bucks? Coopers in Llano gives beans away for free.

Old Tiger, I was figuring you for a Bone Daddy's type...:)

We travel and eat BBQ all over And the country tavern has been the best ribs by far forever. City market has top brisket or near the top as well. I think if I could have one last meal it would be at the tavern with a large plate of ribs. Don't bother with anything except the ribs.

When I think BBQ I think ribs for some reason. Brisket is something totally different, and I've tasted really good brisket at many places, but when it comes to ribs the Country Tavern is the best I've ever eaten. If I had a "last meal" on this earth my request would be a rib plate from the Country Tavern. I like their beans, tater salad, and cole slaw, too.

Is Taste Woods BBQ still open in Wharton? That used to be good stuff.

Mustang Creek in Hillje has the best ribs anywhere-and it's all you can eat.
Mikeskas is he most established place in El Campo-but to compare it to other places around the state would be a crime

Yes Taste Woods still open, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday
The new place in Hungerford (Reyna's) has BBQ from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday's but haven't tasted it yet. We only go there for Mexican food and burgers
There is also a new BBQ opening in downtown Beasley soon

Don't mean to answer out of place but that was called "Harlow's"....I think it closed and is now a "Belles Chicken" but I'm not 100%.

I think they are closed now but there used to be a place called Harolds that was a little hole in the wall down near Walnut St. that had some real brisket.

I've always thought brisket was much harder to get just right than ribs, so I tend to weigh the BBQ places I go heavier on the brisket. The right tenderness and consistency without drying it out is tough to work. I have five-to-ten-minute window to take it off the smoker to get it just right, and I'm not good enough to get it right every time.

Only truly good BBQ I've had in the greater Houston area is Dozier's out in Fulshear. Goode Company, Hinze's, Mikeska's, and Carl's get good press, but I'd rate them a few notches below the best. I'm not big on Mikeska's, but they definitely have a following.

Best I've had is Luling City Market. I prefer it to all the places in Lockhart, but have heard that I also need to give Luling BBQ across the street a try.

Salt Lick and Cooper's are also good, but IMO aren't quite on par with Luling City Mkt, Dozier's, and Smitty's. Cooper's is more pork chops and ribs, Salt Lick has the ribs and rub down, and has the best atmosphere of any BBQ joint I've been to.

Never had Snow's, Louie Mueller's, or Franklin's, but they sound like they're worth the drive. Also heard some good things about Cousins in D/FW (don't know which town). I can also add that place in Kilgore to the list of places I need to try.

In the Corpus area, I always thought Mac's in Gregory was underrated. Back when they were still going, Charlie's in Ingleside was great.

Haven't had truly great Q in B/CS, though Junek's in Wellborn was pretty good. Martin's was more of a good story, but they hit it right from time to time.

I thought the same of New Zion Church during my time in Huntsville. I went there maybe five times, just didn't care for it much. Consistency in the meat was never great. It was typically tough on the outside, more tender towards the middle. A lot of wasted meat. I preferred MacKenzie's, which was above average. Better than any place I had in B/CS, and better than any place I've eaten in Houston.

But there's a thing about "terrible BBQ" (some of which has come from my pit)--it's still good food. I can go to Rudy's (which I'm not a huge fan of) and still enjoy the heck out of my meal.

big daddy russ
02-18-2013, 10:20 PM
Forgot to mention, even though I think some places do a good job with their meat, I'll be the first to admit that I choose the better flavor (MacKenzie's and Salt Lick) over the better meat (Kreuz) most of the time. And that's just personal preference--nothing you can quantify.
