College Station High School sophomore Jacob Simmons, 15, died Tuesday afternoon after he fainted during gym class, school officials said.

College Station Independent School District officials have notified the family, but are withholding details surrounding the death.

The student was in the gym during fifth period, which runs from 1:05 p.m. to 1:55 p.m., when he collapsed. A school spokesman said students were playing dodge-ball in the gym, but would not comment on Simmons' activities.

CPR was immediately administered and a defibrillator was used on the student until an ambulance arrived.

The student was transported to the College Station Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

CSISD will have the crisis counseling team available Wednesday morning for students and staff seeking support.

A spokeswoman for the College Station Police Department confirmed the agency is investigating the death and is waiting on an autopsy report that could take up to six weeks. The spokeswoman said the investigation is procedural, and police do not believe foul play was involved.
