Wow. Good Luck to Coach Nelms at Weatherford. This surprised me. I would look for Wimberley to get a ton of coaching applications. Great Program, Community and Fan Support. Code Red is Awesome.

Surprised too. Wonder what they pay the head Kangaroo with his credentials?

I would hope that he's just looking to get paid (for his retirement) or better yet moving closer to home or parents/children.

Hopefully, it's no sign of the state of Texan football. I wonder if he might recommend one of the assistants or better to leave that to the board?

This is a shock!
One thing that is constant is change.
Best of luck to him in his new position.

I am sure there will be a flood of great applicants for the Wimberley job.
With the community support and tradition, it has to be one of the top spots in the state.

I just went to Weatherford for the first time ever on friday regarding work. It looks like a small town growing like CRAZY as the metroplex moves west.

I also went through Stephenville on the way from LH, first time there, It looks like a good place to raise your kids.... they meet the criteria: (1) good schools, (2) good community and (3) the big one, great football program..... what else do you need...... :)

Well after the Bellville game I went and stuck my head in the dirt. lol But I had to come back out someday!

I heard coach Smith and coach Fikac are going for sure as DC and OC. Also heard there might be another.

I am so glad that my son got to be coached by Nelms and his entire staff all the way through his Jr High and High School playing career and I am sure many other parents feel the same.

Wimberley has been blessed to have such a fine coach with a great winning program from top to bottom. It is sad for the underclassmen, BUT I can only hope they will hire from within and keep some of the Nelm's ideas and attitude in place. The great thing about Nelms program is the staff. There is not 1 or 2 coaches that are head coach caliber, but probably 3 or 4. Not kidding either! I really hope the school board thinks real hard before they would hire from the outside.

I don't blame coach Nelms one bit for taking such a great opportunity and I wish a very fine Man and Coach the very very best in 5A and if anyone can go from 3A to 5A and be successful it is Coach Weldon Nelms. His record and loyalty to Wimberley for all these years will be very hard to ever be matched. Good Luck coach!

Smith just said he was going with him!

That's what I was afraid might happen. Those two are close and understandably so.....so now what? Regardless, it will indeed be a tough transition. I believe the school board needs to look hard and heavy both in and outside the box.

After reading the article in the local paper today, for me, it clears up a lot of things. Coach Nelms did not apply for the job but was actually recruited. It also mentioned he would be closer to family. As far as Mitchell...no waaaaay!!

What I heard...

Weatherford had already brought in three "finalists." The hiring committee decided they didn't like any of them.

They called Weldon and asked, "What would it take to get you here?"

Weldon named an absurdly high number and they said, "OK."

Dick Smith is going because he has spent the last 23 (?) years working with Weldon.

Frankly, I'll miss them both, but I think I'm going to miss Dick more than Weldon.

I've been to Weatherford. You'd have to just about triple my salary to get me to leave Wimberley for there.

My son had his sideline, but I can tell you from our pre-game meeting he is a class indv. I wish him the best of luck in his new job, his new school is very lucky to have him...

Wimberley Market Days to Weatherford's First Monday Trade Days. That's something in common but I think that is about it...lol. I think we'll all miss Coach Nelms and I was also hoping Coach Smith would take over but you have to admire the loyalty and the bond they share. It's going to get very interesting in the days ahead.

Btw, I also heard that Weldon's wife was offered a job there. Apparently she wasn't employed by WISD.

I am sure that Dick could have already been a head coach if he wanted, but that's not him.

No question Nelms is a winner and top notch coach, however, you have to have all the ingredients to make a program work, especially playing 5A (soon 6A) in the DFW metroplex.... thats a tuff row to hoe...

No matter where or what level you coach, you must to have:

Good Coach + Good Staff + Community Buy In + Player Commitment (100% year round dedication/buy in)+ Internal Team Leadership (among the players) + Talent + The Catalyst (ie. X-factor, team chemistry and cohesiveness, intangibles)= Success.

All the above is/was present in Wimberley, I dont know much about Weatherford, but time will tell, they are definately getting a Good Coach.

There is a tremendous amout of pressure on head and assistant coaches in Texas High School Football. They are the chemist in charge of developing and putting all of the above together. All the elements have to be present. Some of the above you can control and cultivate, however, others may or may not be available during any given cycle or group.

Talent (unless you recruit) is the least controlable, but the rest of the factors will produce a winning program, that will be deep run/championship material during the seasons when you have an ample consentration of talent.

However, without question, It all starts with the right Coach: He has to maximize all factors in the groups potential: (The groups potential is the sum of all of the above factors for that given season):

- A good Coach will add wins to the groups potential

- An average Coach will only win at the groups potential

- A below average Coach will subtract wins from the groups potential.

Again Coaches are under an extreme amount of pressure and that only gets worse when they achieve a high level of success. What I mean is if the Coach comes in, builds a strong winning program, maybe even gives you a few state championships, that becomes the expectation no matter what the SUCCESS EQUATION is looking like that year. A community that would have once been happy with a winning season is furious with anything other than a deep run. I can only imagine the pressue this puts on the good Coaches. As for communities that have been blessed with a good Coach implementing a winning program we shouldnt forget where we started and where we have come.

Good Luck Coach Nelms, Wimberley and Lampasas...... choose wisely.....

I have met Coach Nelms a few times when I called his games. Having graduated from Weatherford, I wish him all the best. However, he is not the first really good coach to go there in the last 10 to 12 years. Mike Sneed, a Weatherford grad, went there after bringing Aledo to the forefront and then taking Grapevine to two class 4a state titles.

Weatherford has always been in a district with preennial powerhouses. Back in my day it was Brownwood, Hirshi, & Vernon. More recently it has been the likes of Abilene and now the Arlington schools. Good luck Coach Nelms.

All coaches on this high of a level think they have been cheated, know they have been cheated, have bad calls, no calls, you name it they probably all have been through it many many times with their teams. I said nothing about his ability to coach. Im sure he is very good. I only have two games to go on, how could any of us WT's have an opinion on that. Why would anybody think a very successful program like Sealy would have a bad coaching coach. BUT, most would have a problem with the actions he showed that night in Wimberley AND I'll say it again, "in the million sporting events i've seen in Wimberley, I have never seen a coach act so un professional and out of control". (oh and if you look at the different angles he did not get in either!) LOL

I’ve been to Weatherford only twice, last time was before Christmas, kind of out of the way from here and south Texas. My opinion is Weatherford, and towns like it are like Denny’s, no one really goes there they just end up there, , , , , or (this case) get paid a lot to be there. Very fast growing and busy community.
