Madisonville girls upset Navasota
NAVASOTA -- Her given name is La'Neique. No doubt some people think of her as Lisa Nealey's little sister. She'd prefer to go by Tootie.

La'Neique Nealey deserves to make the call after the Madisonville sophomore scored the winning basket with 3 seconds remaining as the 16th-ranked Lady Mustangs knocked off top-ranked Navasota 49-48 before a nearly packed house at Rattler Gym on Tuesday night.

Tootie Nealey and her senior sister Lisa combined for 37 points, producing all 10 of Madisonville's second-half baskets in a tense, hard-fought battle between District 18-3A leaders. Tootie Nealey scored 19 points, including the basket that allowed the Lady Mustangs (19-5, 4-0) to withstand a ferocious comeback by Navasota.

The Lady Rattlers (29-2, 3-1) trailed by as many as nine points late in third quarter, but charged back to take a three-point lead. Tootie Nealey pulled Madisonville within 48-47 on a short jumper with 1:48 remaining.

With the crowd roaring, the teams combined to miss five shots, four free throws and commit two turnovers during the next 90 seconds. Navasota standout Alexus Freeman missed the front end of a one-and-one with 11 seconds left, and Tootie Nealey grabbed the rebound.

Tootie passed the ball to her sister, who was pressured near mid-court and gave the ball back to Tootie. She drove down the right side of the lane and made a running 6-footer with 3 seconds left.

"It's amazing stuff, but Tootie has a passion for the game," Madisonville coach Shana Taylor said. "She had one of her best games. She never quit. The game could have been different if not for her. It was her night to shine."

After the go-ahead basket, Navasota called a timeout, and the officials reset the clock from 1.2 to 4 seconds. The Lady Rattlers' desperation inbounds pass was intercepted by Jasmine Shaffer to bring an end to Navasota's program-best 27-game winning streak.

"It was a typical Navasota-Madisonville game," Navasota coach Tommy Gates said. "It was a battle. I thought our effort was outstanding. We made a lot of mistakes. We did a lot of things that are uncharacteristic of us. A lot of that has to do with who you play."

Taylor felt much the same, even though Madisonville stretched its winning streak against Navasota to six games.

"We were never comfortable in our offensive sets because of Navasota's defense," Taylor said. "Hats off to them. We just had to make do. Luckily we have kids that can create their own shots."

Lisa Nealey, who as a freshman played a key role as Madisonville reached the state tournament, made a couple of 3-pointers on her way to 18 points. She had a three-point play to push the Lady Mustangs ahead 44-37 early in the fourth quarter, but Freeman (13 points) ignited Navasota's comeback when she answered by banking in a 3-pointer.

Lady Rattler freshman Tashyra Banks, also known as Tootie, produced the next six points for a 46-45 Navasota lead. Banks finished with 12 points.

Harley White grabbed a rebound and scored with 2:01 left to put the Lady Rattlers up 48-45, but the last two baskets and the league lead belonged to Madisonville.

"Before the game I told the girls that we were going to find out what we're made of," Taylor said. "It's the heart of the kids that brought us this win."

The game was close in every statistical category, including free throws made (11-8 Madisonville). The difference was provided by Lady Mustang junior post Amber Byrd, who hit 8 of 12 free throws. She and Navasota's Denisha Ford (4 of 6) were the only players to make more than half their free-throw attempts.

The teams will play at Madisonville in the second round of district play on Feb. 1.
