Patrick Goodman is now part of an elite club.
Twenty-seven years after helping Sweetwater High School win a Class 4A football state championship in 1985 as a player, Goodman — now an assistant coach at Navasota — was part of another state title celebration on Dec. 21 when the Rattlers defeated Gilmer, 39-3, at Arlington’s Cowboys Stadium to win the Class 3A Division II championship.
Goodman is in his eighth year at Navasota, where he serves as the co-defensive coordinator. He is also the head boys basketball coach as well as the strength and conditioning coach for the entire athletics program, and also serves as an assistant in track. He was the head powerlifting coach before taking over as head boys basketball coach in 2010, where he has led the Rattlers to the playoffs in each of his first two years.
After graduating from SHS, Goodman received a football scholarship to Eastern New Mexico University but transferred to Texas Tech, where he earned his degree and was a walk-on player for the Red Raiders. He also coached at Lubbock Monterey, Brownwood and Georgetown before coming to Navasota, which finished this year with a 16-0 record and outscored its opponents 714-110, with five shutouts including each of the other four teams in its district. The Rattlers won their four district games by an aggregate score of 191-0.
Navasota was almost as dominant in the postseason, beating China Spring 62-16, Jasper 59-14, La Marque 31-20, West Orange-Stark 38-7 and Bellville 24-7 prior to its easy win over Gilmer in the championship game.
During his high school days at Sweetwater, Good-man was a two-time first team all-district defensive back for coach W.T. Stapler. Sweetwater was a state semifinalist his junior year.

Yes sir. Goodman is an excellent coach and a fine man. Sweetwater can be very proud of this native son.
