Galveston County
Coach of the Year

Mike Jackson, La Marque

The La Marque Cougars won a district title for the first time in six years and played into the third round of the playoffs — going further than any other Galveston County school — before losing to the eventual undefeated and top-ranked state champion.

With all the success La Marque had on the football field, it’s no surprise head Cougar Mike Jackson has been named The Daily News’ Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

“It’s an awesome honor, one that goes to the kids and the entire staff,” Jackson said. “It was a good year.”

The Cougars played to an 11-2 record in their first Class 3A campaign. The squad was ranked as high as No. 1 in the state and plowed through District 24-3A with a 4-0 record — outscoring opponents 163-7 — and recorded five shutouts during the season.

La Marque went on to win a pair of playoffs games, avenging its only regular season loss to Coldspring-Oakhurst in the second round, before giving Navasota it’s toughest game of the year in a 31-20 third-round loss.

To many, the match against Navasota was really the state championship game. Most thought the winner would roll on to the title, and the Rattlers did. La Marque put up 20 points on Navasota and probably left a minimum of 12 points (not counting extra points) on the field in arguably it's worst game of the year. The combined offensive output of all three of Navasota's opponents after the La Marque game was 17 points. WOS = 7, Bellville = 7 and in the title game Gilmer = 3.

“It’s been really tough the last three weeks to watch Navasota mow down West Orange-Stark, and Bellville and then Gilmer and know that we feel like we done the same thing if we got through that game, but to the victor goes the spoils,” Jackson said. “We have to try to internalize this and use this pain to get better for next year.”

The coach praised the way his roster played together as a team this season to win.

“This was more of a workmanlike group that grinded together through the season, and I’m really proud of that,” Jackson said. “Were didn’t have the very talented home-run hitters in the years past that have been here. We played sound football with good technique and outworked people. They kept chopping wood, and I’m very proud of that.”

We did lose some good players on defense though. This will be Coach Jackson's third year at the helm in La Marque. His program will finally be in place, should be a good year.
