View Full Version : Padilla's 7A Proposal

Carl Padilla put out a pretty interesting realignment idea for 2014 where we add a Class 7A....I just looked at it and the districts look for the most part reasonable....in 4A (most of current 3A) there's lots of five team districts, but travel is kept reasonable and non-district scheduling will be OK because most everyone is in a five teamer..the cut offs are below

7A 2550+ 134 schools
6A 1730-2549 207 schools
5A 870-1729 201 schools
4A Div. I 578-869 83 schools
4A Div. II 400-577.5 84 schools
3A Div. I 292-399 91 schools
3A Div. II 205-291 91 schools
2A Div. I 155-204 87 schools
2A Div. II 100-154 91 schools

Wish the UIL would go with something this sensible and simple. I would take it one step further in nomenclature only---Why continue to confuse things with split classifications, just number the classifications 9A thru 1A and be done with it.

What is the rationale behind the 5A division and its disparity from top to bottom?

You can't use those two words in the same sentence with the UIL. Cut it out! :tisk:

From what I read 5A and 6A would still split into D1 and D2 based on size of top 4 teams. (just like 4A and 5A now) 2A-4A would be "pre-split" divisions.

With this there would be 11 state champs.

7A
6A Div. I
6A Div. II
5A Div. I
5A Div. II
4A Div. I
4A Div. II
3A Div. I
3A Div. II
2A Div. I
2A Div. II

Maybe I misunderstood...

Nope you got it right!

Not sure why the biggest gap is in 5A, but even so its smaller than the biggest ratio out there..

Dr. Beithupt (UIL head honcho) sent Padilla an e-mail at 12:30 today stating they were going to take a good look at the proposal and will likely have Carl present it this spring..

Yep--lots of room between top and bottom in 5A. Maybe trying to keep most metro schools in 5A for travel.

The travel in 7A districts 1 & 2 would be brutal.

1-7A could easily add San Angelo and zone it....travel issue solved....but remember

Odessa to Abilene 170 miles
Odessa to Lubbock 146 miles
Odessa to Amarillo 263 miles
Odessa to El Paso 285 miles

So its not THAT much of a difference...if 2-7A keeps San Angelo the DFW schools just make one trip out there every 2 years...for San Angelo, they will travel any way you slice it no biggie for them

To keep the so called district of doom from playing the 4A drop downs from this year? LOL

So under this Proposal the top 3 classifications would not have two divisions meaning 1 state champ while others will stay with 2 champs.....correct?

This looks like a good idea, LH would teeder on the divider of 4A-DI and 5A , for the first alignment, Then would remain 5A for a long time there after.

Yeah I was thinking of maybe Liberty Hill and Wimberley in the same district, but that is just a dream match-up I would like to see; I don't know how realistic it would be though?

They are in the 600's and we are in the 800's. We are growing fast. LH will open a new High School in the fall, we outgrew the fairly new one that was built around 10 years ago to hold 600 kids. The new one will hold 1600.

In the near future, I see us in a district with Marble Falls, Burnet, Lampasas, and Brownwood for a long time.

I wish some of that growth would come here. Been a while since we've had an enrollment boost. (Mid 90's)

What is the big advantage to adding another classification?

With this proposed breakdown, it seems like a large percentage of teams in a classification would make the playoffs.

Got it, $$$$ for UIL.

Advantage is more playoff games, more $....another advantage is reducing the enrollment ratios in the larger classes...under this proposal the only class w/more than a 2:1 ratio is 7A (which with schools like Plano East will always have a 2:1)

right now here's the enrollment ratios

5A: 2.87
4A: 2.07
3A: 2.23
2A Div. I: 1.50
2A Div. II: 1.48
1A Div. I: 1.32
1A Div. I: 1.50

Under proposal
7A: 2.35
6A: 1.47
5A: 1.98
4A Div. I: 1.50
4A Div. II: 1.44
3A Div. I: 1.36
3A Div. II: 1.41
2A Div. I: 1.31
2A Div. II: 1.54

Yeah, that area isn't growing much other than Angleton and Lake Jackson. I was an Exporter and grew up in Freeport in the 80's. Back then we were on the larger end of 4A, now they are close to dropping to 3A.

The old folks will still bitch about having "too many state champions" and the playoffs being "watered down", but there definitely needs to be added classes. The disparity in 5a is ridiculous. When you can have Rowlett(2300) playing Allen(5000+) in the first round, something needs to change.
Carl will definitely make them an offer they can't refuse. Charlie will kiss the ring.

This all looks good when you are talking about just football. What do you do with the other sports? Lots of travel isnt bad when its once a week on a fri or sat. What about Tues dist road games in all the others? Also, lots of sports have state tournaments, how would you play a state tournament with 9 or more classifications? The UIL hates all the sports other than football. Those other sports will just get screwed over or maybe the UIL will just get rid of them all together.

My junior and senior year we (Comanche) were in a district with Sonora - 3.5 hour drive one way. Long basketball season. Games were an all day thing.

Terrible range of attendance in the top divisions.
