Don't u know? They are fast. Whole team has speed. And when I say speed, I mean speed. East Texas speed at that! U haven't seen speed until you have seen east tx speed. West tx speed cant hold a candle to east tx speed. Do you know what I am saying? I almost feel like I have speed after talking about all that speed! LMAO

In my opinion, Gilmer is more battle tested than Graham has been. If you look at each team's schedule, Graham's opponents, not including Gilmer, are a combined 88-73. Gilmer's opponents however are 99-69.

Pre-District: Graham had 6 games with all but 1 being a playoff team. Only 1, however, made it past the 1st round (Abilene Wylie). Gilmer had 4 games with all 4 being playoff teams, one in 4A and one in 2A. 3 of those teams made it to at least the 2nd round with Daingerfield (2A) still playing in the 5th round.
Advantage: Gilmer

District: Graham plays in a 5 team district and only 2 of those teams finished with winning records. Burkburnett was a playoff team and finished (2-9). Gilmer plays in a 7 team district in which all 3 playoff teams made it to at least the 4th round, the only district that can claim that. Bullard (7-3) and defending Div. I state champions Chapel Hill failed to make the playoffs in the same district.
Advantage: Gilmer

Playoffs: Both teams face off against good competition when it comes playoff time. Graham has played teams with better overall records, but I would bet teams like Argyle and Henderson would have a pretty good chance of winning that region as well, both are teams that finished a combined 0-3 vs. Gilmer this year.
Advantage: Slightly Gilmer

I expect a close, hard fought game Friday in Mansfield. I wouldn't expect more than a 14 point win for either team, whoever that may be.

Gilmer's defense has held some good offenses well below their season averages this year.

Atlanta has 2 D-I running backs on their team and I'm willing to bet they had a total of 200 yards rushing combined over both games we played against them.

Argyle has a very good offense and have put up some big offensive numbers. Our defense held them to 21 points (7 after a turnover giving them about 25 yards to score and 7 in mop up duty), under 100 yards passing, and held their leading rusher to under 40 yards.

Against Henderson, our defense allowed quite a few yards in the 1st half (about 240), but shut them down to about 75 total yards in the 2nd half.

Against Kilgore, we held them to their lowest point total of the season at 14 (Henderson also held them to 14 the week before) and about 295 yards of offense (195 rushing, 100 passing).

I'll try to compile Gilmer's game-by-game stats and post them and you can see how good, or bad, Gilmer's defense has played this year.

Honestly speed is important but execution is the key. Graham can execute and we are so playing great ball right now. Gilmer, not taking anything away from them, have been lucky on 2 playoff wins by teams not executing and finishing games. The Steers finish the game with great execution, smart handling of the ball, and aggressive defense. This may have a basketball score at the end of the game, not hinting Gilmer, but I feel the red, white, and blue well be playing at "Jerry World" next weekend!!!!!!!!!!

I have only been following Gilmer closely for a couple of years now, married into the family, and now I can't get enough haha! But honestly at the beginning of the season I didn't think they would make it out of the district intact. Those boys impressed me with their growth throughout the season and their ability to execute and stay disciplined. Yes, they have speed but that is only one facet; they know how to run the offense and buy into the system. Nobody on the field tries to be a one man team. They keep their heads where others would fall apart. They have been outweighed all year but I promise they deliver just as hard of hits as anyone out on the field. I look forward to an exciting game Friday night!

What two games are you hinting at? Gilmer beat Canton 51-36, Atlanta 57-13, Argyle 42-21. You could make that assumption in the Henderson game, beating them by 7 points, but their entire offense was based on two people and that will only take you so far. The way I see it, Gilmer beat all those teams by two or more touchdowns, and that is not luck.

Go through and read who started the speed talk in this thread. You will find that it is from those who aren't from Gilmer. We just happened to agree with them.

And we have seen Reg. I teams shouting about how they will smash Gilmer with their "bone-shattering" hitting and have only had 1 close game against those teams. If you expect Gilmer to be on the same level as those "lightning fast, explosive" teams that you have played so far, you will be sadly mistaken. I promise, you have not seen a team with as many playmakers as Gilmer has this year. Take a look at our stats on Max Preps and you will see just how spread out our stats are over several players.

I'm not certain there is any other place one can really grasp the concept of high school playoff football in its purest form than right here in this 3ADL forum. The size of the schools from the small towns across the Texas landscape that eat, sleep, and breathe football fanaticism for their native sons are the very definition of this sport in its absolute purest and rawest form. NOT at the 4A level, or even the 5A level, does one encounter this same sense of pride and enthusiasm that these size schools and their fanbases portray in support of their respective teams. It seems that the entire town and county, if not district and area, goes AWOL come Friday nite to support their boyz in these playoffs. These final battles on the gridiron of glory between regional champions from across this football-crazed state are about to meet for an opportunity to prove themselves worthy once again to stand on the hallowed ground of State Championship football. These teams are the survivors of a season filled with great plays, hard hits, total all-out commitment to win, and great resolve to persevere even when everything looked like the game(and season) may be lost. This is what Friday Nite Lights is all about. Every player that steps onto the field this week is a champion, regardless of the outcome of this game. As fans of this great sporting spectacle we have here in Texas, let's not forget what we have in front of us....the greatest, most pure form of football to experience on this planet. The quality of play may be to a higher degree at the 5A level, but to witness the game in it's purest form.....I'll take the 3A level every time. Good luck to both schools this Friday, and enjoy the journey. This trip is very special.

Here is an Article from the TRN.

GRAHAM — With a second trip to the 3A Division II state title game in the past four years on the line Friday, Graham is squarely focused on its semifinal opponent Gilmer.

However this season ends for the 13-1 Steers, the long-term outlook is also very bright thanks to the production of several underclassmen.

The 2009 Graham state finalists were a senior-heavy squad that depended on only a few juniors and one sophomore.

Not so with the 2012 Steers, who will be returning their top three skill position players and have utilized seven sophomores.

"There's an old adage that for every sophomore you have on varsity, that's a loss. I've heard that said at a lot of places," Graham coach Kenny Davidson said. "I think we did better than seven losses." Davidson said he isn't worried about what grade a player is in, only whether they can makes the plays needed to be successful. And he pointed out that 14 games into the season, there isn't such a thing as a young player anymore.

But it's still impressive — and scary for the rest of 5-3A — that quarterback Ben Davis (3,124 yards, 26 TDs), tailback Dillon Gonzales (1,865 total yards, 28 TDs) and receiver Bryce Reeves (67-995-9) will all be back in 2013.

"I didn't play a lot, but last year helped a little bit. I saw Errik Ortiz run and I just got better and learned a lot," Gonzales said. "We're one game away from Cowboys Stadium and that's been our goal since last November."

Although they'll miss leaders Jerrod Mahan and Hunter Walls, the Steers' defense will have seven returning starters next season, including leading tackler Spur Hearne (124 tackles) and nose guard Husky Melendez (80 tackles).

"I know that next year we'll be good for sure, which is nice to know. But I'm right now just looking forward to this year," Reeves said. "I think our team is more close together and bonded. Last year we had a lot of fighting going on."

Currently, Graham is starting four sophomores — offensive lineman Kenny Dixon, defensive end Dustin McWhorter, cornerback Landon Gonzales and outside linebacker Mike Freeze. Backups Hagan Hughes at tailback and Colton Langley at linebacker have also contributed.

"All those kids showed up this year and they've played some of the biggest roles on the team," said senior Hunter Jones, who along with Reeves are the team's only two-way starters. "They say senior leadership is what you need. We have the senior leadership and we also have the underclassmen that give it their all every game."

n n n

Much has been written about the Graham defense's penchant for turning turnovers into touchdowns — mostly returning interceptions for scores.

When Jones jumped a rout and picked off Gatesville quarterback Cole Edmiston in the first half, he had 54 yards of open turf in front of him. But Edmiston ran him down after 32 yards, denying Jones Graham's 10th defensive score of 2012.

"I got that pick and I was running down the sidelines and I saw him there and was like, 'Dadgum it,'" Jones said. "He's a stud. They told me I should have hurdled him or gone around him, and I was like, 'That's crazy.'"

The last Graham team that played this deep into the season had a prominent coaching father and son behind it.

While the McCoys have moved on, senior wideout Braden Lang is enjoying this playoff ride with his father, assistant coach Brad Lang.

"Being with my dad, having him as a coach and going through a state run, it's just been a really fun year," said Lang, who has 23 catches for 308 yards.

Assistant coach Robert Sides has had a sophomore son on varsity both three years ago and now. Derek Sides is a backup quarterback and receiver, while his older brother Brian was the only sophomore who played in 2009.

n n n

Usually Fox Sports Southwest sideline reporter and postgame show host Emily Jones can be found near the Rangers dugout or in front of the camera after the Mavericks play.

But Jones was in Stephenville last week watching the Steers' exciting 40-35 victory over Gatesville.

The reason? She is the aunt of Graham linebacker Hunter Hughes and his younger brother Hagen, who is a tailback.

n n n

In the past decade, an area 3A program has won the region four times. The first three went 1-2 in the state semifinals.

In 2009, Graham defeated Pittsburg 27-20. Vernon lost to Atlanta in 2003 (32-14) and to Celina in 2006 (30-13).

Yes Henderson and Argyle. You east Texas folks talk lots of crap... Your football there is not any different from any other football in Texas. Texas high school football is awesome in TEXAS! One region from another doesn't make a difference. So keep talking your smack because the smack down is coming to you guys friday night!!!!!!

Yes, Argyle was supposed to beat Gilmer, but they had no discipline when it got tough. Yes, they were a very good team, but they didn't know what to do against a team that actually put up a fight. They came into that game "knowing" they had the game in the bag before the bus was even unloaded. Maybe if they had been better coached to not be so cocky, they would not have fallen apart. It was not luck that beat Argyle by 21 points, it was being outplayed and outcoached. Our guys look past nobody, focus on the task at hand, and play their game. Any team that makes it to this level is talented, so I absolutely believe Graham is a very good team. At the same time, I promise we are more than just lucky to have made it here.

Incorrect on almost every point. Argyle was not outcoached. The coaching staff at Argyle is one of the best in the state. The offense struggled and the defense missed their best player, who would have stopped the up the middle scores by Tanner Barr, and, at the very least, slowed the edge runs. Trust me, Wilson is a legit 10.1 hundred guy who would not have been outrun by either running back and especially the qb. You might want to check your facts before posting next time. This same Argyle staff beat Gilmer in the previous 2 years something like 41-14 and 51-35.

All that being said, Gilmer will beat Graham by at least 3 tds this week. Then they will lose by at least 2 tds to Navasota. Navasota would beat Stephenville.

I didn't mean anything against the Argyle coaches, just that they let their players have this cocky attitude. When they get knocked off their high horse they had no idea how to react and imploded. Their guys were so hotheaded they couldn't be kept under control, and because of the two previous years' scores, they thought they just deserved to roll on by Gilmer. I am sorry to hear they didn't have their best defensive player; I don't wish for anyone in high school to be cut short for injury. Aside from that, Gilmer's defense held Argyle to 21 points which is a pretty good feat in my opinion.

Dude, we can do this all day. The bottom line is, come Friday night, you will go home saying, "Well, crap."

You played in, quite possibly, the worst district in the state, which include 3 8-loss teams. Plus you played Bridgeport, who, while they made the playoffs, were terrible (no offense, Bulls). You lost to Wylie 31-7. Argyle lost 31-14 in the 1st game of the season, with a qb with 0 experience, before changing their entire defensive scheme.

I realize all this is apples to oranges. I am just letting you know that you are going to get a heavy dose of reality on Friday night. Region II is better than Region I. Just let that be known. Right now Gilmer is the best Region II has. Graham can do nothing to stop them, unless Gilmer loses both RBs, their QB, and the NG #13. Then, Graham may have a shot.

Like I said, it is really a moot point anyway, because, even if you somehow win, Navasota will shut you out the next week. They will beat Gilmer by at least 2 tds and Gilmer is 3 tds better than you. Book it!

With all due respect to the other teams in Region 1, Stephenville is on a whole 'nother level than any other team in Region 1. Kilgore had some turnovers, and gave the high-octane offense of Stephenville a short field for a couple of their scores. If not for that it might have been different. Stephenville was the better team and won it fair and square against Kilgore. By the way, we beat Kilgore, too.

Graham will definitely try to contain us, and might do a good job of it, but if any of about 7 or 8 of our players gets a step, it's goodbye. Just telling you the truth. Our defense is fast, too, and has attitude. #20 and #13 will be in the backfield all night, along with #2. Just saying.......buckle up those chin straps tight. You played in, quite possibly, the worst district in the state, which include 3 8-loss teams. Plus you played Bridgeport, who, while they made the playoffs, were terrible (no offense, Bulls). One region from another doesn't make a difference. So keep talking your smack because the smack down is coming to you guys friday night!!!!!!

I don't doubt that one bit. SOME people here do tend to take the "East Texas is the only place" pedestal, and while we have had many state champions in recent years, I don't ever like to discount any team because of location. For Graham to make it here y'all have obviously played some real good football. The only thing I have seen on Graham is the highlights from last week vs Gatesville, and that looked like an awesome game to be at. This Friday should be even more exciting and Gilmer will not underestimate anybody. We will show up ready to play and expecting a battle.

Take this post for what you will.

Graham is a very good team. Offensively, they execute precision passes and run the ball very effectively. The QB is a smart and composed player that has a solid arm. Can throw a very good deep ball and has sure handed receivers that run good routes. Runs a play action very well and can scramble. He's protected by a good sized O-line that plays hard every play. The RB isn't very big but is lightning in a bottle so to speak. Very quick and has great speed especially around the corners. Defensively, they play hard and swarm to the ball. D-line is strong and has good technique. The LB's and DB's thrive in making big plays, big hits and are ball hawks in the secondary. Overall a very good team that has gelled over the season and has a refuse to lose attitude. Quick overall team speed.

Gilmer is a very good team as well. Offensively, they execute a balanced attack by getting the ball in the hands of their speedy playmakers through the command of their QB. They don't have just 1-2 speedy backs, but a platoon of them. The QB has a solid arm and is very elusive in the pocket. They have speed at every skill position and more speed. They thrive on getting the football into the hands of their backs and receivers in open space to make the plays. QB is composed and doesn't get rattled much at all. Very fast overall speed from the O-line to the RB's. Defensively, they play hard and swarm to the ball. They have very fast LB's and DB's that will light it up. D-line is strong and very fast that can close down on a fast RB. Overall a very good team that has also gelled over the season and have that refuse to lose attitude. Not just quick, but very fast overall team speed.

The edge goes to Gilmer on film, on paper and strength of schedule. BUT, Graham has as much of a chance as any team in the playoffs to win this game. They have a group of players that are true gamers. They rise to the occasion each week and look adversity in the face and continue to overcome. They will be a tough team to get passed and believe they have what it takes to compete and win.

Good luck to both.

Got to go with Graham in this one. They've proved me wrong one to many times this season.

I believe that they will win!

I've watched Gatesville and watched Gilmer on film. Let me let you in on a little secret. Gilmer's team speed will be greater than anything that Graham has seen all year. ;)

I've watched Graham, Gatesville, Glen Rose, Waco La Vega, Brownwood, Alvarado, Abilene Wylie, Kilgore, Stephenville, Kennedale, and Aledo this season... a few more but not worth mentioning. From what I've seen on video, Gilmer will be the fastest team out of all of them and Kilgore was FAST brotha. I mean fast! Stephenville is the best team out of all of the mentioned and Kilgore gave them all they wanted to the very end. Gilmer beat Kilgore. For Graham to win, they will have to play their best game of the season so far. I believe they can. Best of luck! Truely mean that.

I like your assesment of the teams, can't vouch for Graham but I believe you on it. I think the game will come down to whichever team is better conditioned, and thus far I have not seen a team as conditioned as the Gilmer Buckeyes. They play all four quarters just as hard and fast as the first kickoff, and most opponents I have watched were sucking air into the third.

All kidding aside, Gilmer fans believe Gilmer will win and Graham fans believe Graham will win and that's the way it should be. Graham is going into this game as the underdog, which they do in most playoff games. I believe our kids will find a way to get it done and come out with the win. It will be a back and forth game, just like the Gatesville game. I think our D will get a few stops and hopefully a few turnovers. Good luck Steers!!

Yep. He's been held so many times this season it's ludicrous that there hasn't been more holding calls. If the refs would call it just every once in a while he would have had probably 30 sacks, and about 40 tackles for losses. He still has quite a few of each anyway.

Graham has been to the big game once and got a taste of it. These young men know, that goal is within grasp again and have taken it upon themselves to attain it. They will fight with everything they have to get it, just as we all know yours (gilmer) will also. It all comes down to who wants it the most and who makes the big plays and fewest mistakes! In 35.5 hours we kickoff to decide who go to the big house for all the marbles!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure if you look back we have... Why do you guys think east Texas teams are so great. I see east Texas as a bunch of bad teeth (if they even have any in there mouth), stinky, red necks... Just saying

Now we have been called "redneck" and "Yankee-like" in the same thread....wow!

I am pretty sure it has been said before in this thread, but don't lump all of the Graham posters into one bunch. Most of us are pretty good fellas. Heck, there are plenty of rednecks in Graham for sure.

Does anyone from Graham think they will or even might lose?
Does anyone from Gilmer think they will or even might lose?

I bet the answer is the same for both questions!

Just like there are probably some pretty good posters in or around gilmer. Just picking lol, everyone supports their own and sometimes they get a little carried away with their excitement and enthusiasm. Can't fault them for the pride they have in all these high school young men. Just remember it's about the memories that are being made.

Well as it stands right now, the weather for kick of time is, cloudy, 30% chance of rain, this chance starts earlier in the day also, so most likely it will be alittle wet! 55 degrees at game time, winds out of the sse at 15 mph. chance of thunderstorms will be looming around end of game! Better prepare for rain!

Here goes my prediction.....

Graham win the toss and defers to the second half.

Gilmers first drive ends with a punt.

Graham takes the ball and drives the field for a score.

Gilmer take the ball and drives 50 yards and turns it over with a bad pass.

Graham takes the ball and drives the field for another score.

Gilmer takes the ball only 30 yards and is stuffed on a 3rd and long with a qb sack for a 9 yard loss.

Graham takes the ball 40 yards and scores again!

halftime

Graham get the ball the second half and scores again..

Gilmer goes the passing game and trys and catch up and it only get worse from there.

Gilmer scores 14 in the second half but Graham rolls with the win.

Here's my prediction: The same team that beat Henderson and Argyle will show up for this game against the Graham Steers, and they will be more than up for the task at hand. Get ready for a team filled with athleticism and speed. Argyle is no slouch, but they outplayed us in every facet that nite. Our qb was not ready for the speed that pressured him all nite in the backfield. Henderson will attest to the same kind of problems they had in maintaining the ball on offense. Both teams will score, but the Buckeyes will out-athlete the Steers and that will again be the difference here. I look for a very similar score to the Argyle game....about 42-21 Gilmer. Maybe the Steers can keep it closer with some turnovers, but they must make those turnovers cash. I don't think Graham will be able to stop Gilmer on offense, but I think Gilmer will be able to stop Graham on defense. Good luck to both teams. BTW, I think Gilmer can play with anyone is DII this year, and win! Just my take on this game.

Tempers flare a bit from time to time as expected!!! But they all know its a long ride to the house with a coach that is a freak about that kind of stuff!!! If we win a game it's because we played good ball! that's what I like about our coaches , they ain't putting up with that crap, it makes everyone look bad!!!
