Whomever Sweeny hires will have a big impact on the program's future.

SWEENY — With Athletics Director and football coach Brett Sawyer set to leave the district this summer, the Sweeny ISD school board decided they’d like to be a bit more involved in hiring his replacement than they have had in similar situations in the past.

The move was made at a special board meeting Tuesday when trustees met to discuss the hiring of a new athletics director and a few other personnel issues.

Being more involved equates to having a couple of board members — Jan Reddoch and Gary Woodard — serve on the district’s hiring committee, board member Donna Bohlar-Schroeder said.

“They won’t have a vote,” she said, about the winnowing process of choosing semifinalists and a finalist for the position.

But the final yes or no vote to hire whoever is picked is a different story, because all school district employees are hired by the school board.

“Our athletic director is an administration position,” Superintendent Randy Miksch said. So in addition to coaching experience, he said, the district will look for a candidate to also have things like an administration certificate and perhaps a master’s degree.

As of now, the feeling is they’ll likely have the field of candidates narrowed down to a finalist by late January or February, Miksch said.
