Why was a flag thrown?

Was watching this. They called unnecessary roughness, hit on a defenseless player. Was a legal hit but I guess the refs felt it was unnecessary. I didn't agree

If they throw a flag on that play ^^^^^^^, why not on this one??

From the same game...

The referee never said anythig about a defenseless player. That was just the talking heads. The referee only said unneccessary roughness. We don't know what excatly the flagging official (and I think only 1 flagged) saw. Did he see it as a deliberate hit to the helmet? Did he see it as a hit initiated by the blocker's helmet? We judt don't know. There is no way a guy chasing a ball carrier in an attempt to tackle him is defenseless.

Would the fact that the player launched himself...leaving his feet have anything to do with it? Just asking.

I suspect that may be what the flagging official saw. But there is no rule against leaving your feet to throw a block (like there is in flag football). Great disagreement in the officiating community about this play and the flag. Perhaps the National Coordinator will weigh in.

I think a lot of these penalties are ridiculous. A lot of the hits are shoulder to shoulder but the whiplash is what causes it to look like helmet to helmet.

The reason it is coming to this is because the NFL is being sued for just about everything they have by former players but the NFL is brainwashing people into this concussion hysteria.

We should see what zebrablue thinks. After all he is an experienced official.
