Pirates had 3 solid drives that produced 3 tds.Last one was called back because of a penalty.Offense cut the fumbles down tonight.defense bent a little but never broke.Great job on both sides of the ball. This should boost their confidence a bunch.Hey 1-3 looks a lot better than 0-4.

This was a good win for the Pirates. I saw some very positive things last night. Pirates did most of it with the running game. Some passing, but mostly rushing. RB Franco is back and looks to be healthy. OC finally figured out you can pass on first down also. Sinton did it four times last night. Two went incomplete. One went for a nice 1st down, the other went for Sinton's first score.
When #33, Rodgers gets some expierience, he could be good later in the season. Heard last night he is a fast as Bubba Heard, but as a senior, never played football before.

Perennial power Pirates upend Bulldogs to avoid 0-4 start to season

By Lee Goddard Caller-Times
September 20, 2003

SINTON - Sinton head football coach Jimmie Mitchell has been waiting for a sign, a play - anything really - that showed that his young team had turned the corner and finally learned how to win.

In the second quarter, Mitchell received his wish in the form of a 15-play drive.

The Pirates earned their first victory of the season, launching the turning point with a clock-chewing drive and a strong defensive effort, beating visiting Orange Grove, 14-3, Friday night at Pirate Stadium.

The victory against the District 31-3A Bulldogs is the first in four games this season for Sinton (1-3), and allows the team to avoid its worst start since an 0-4 beginning to the 1995 season.

It was the best convergence of offense and defense for the team. Running back Travis Franco rushed for 142 yards on 22 carries and a score, while the defense held Orange Grove (2-2) to 37 second-half yards.

And, after back-to-back games against powerful Gregory-Portland and Rice Consolidated, the triumph gives the defending 30-3A champions a confidence boost. Granted, it's a championship with very few returnees to defend it.

"Everybody I talked to said it would take some time," Mitchell said. "We had, basically, five kids (who) played in a varsity game before in their lives. Everybody else is coming from JV, freshman team. We're getting there."

It took some time against the Bulldogs, too.

Orange Grove ripped off a 10-play drive in the first quarter that resulted in a field goal and a 3-0 lead.

It took Sinton a little while to respond, punting on its next possession. But, getting the ball early in the second quarter, the Pirates put together the best drive of their young season. Starting at its own 27, Sinton marched down the field methodically, chewing seven minutes, 15 seconds off the clock and earning six first downs.

Finally, after 14 plays, the Pirates maneuvered to the Bulldogs' 8. Quarterback Daniel Ramirez rolled right as P.J. Salone faded to the corner of the end zone, and Ramirez hit Salone for the score and the 7-3 lead.

"It was one drive where we did everything right," Mitchell said. "We didn't have fumbles. We didn't have penalties. We didn't make mistakes. We put it all together."

Sinton looked like the complete package after that.

"That was a big point, right there," Orange Grove head coach Brent Kornegay said. "They took the momentum in with them at halftime."

The defense, victimized this season by the offense's turnovers, squeezed the Bulldogs in the second half, allowing 37 yards of total offense - five yards passing with an interception - and four first downs.

The offense looked like it found its rhythm following the drive. After a 29-yard first half effort by Franco, the junior cranked out 113 rushing yards - almost triple Orange Grove's second-half output - and a game-sealing, fourth-quarter 6-yard scoring run in the second half.

"(The drive) is what we needed," Franco said. "We knew we just had to take away the mistakes, and do what we do best."

For Sinton teams of the past, that has been winning. It now appears the new guys have it figured out.
