Wylie takes this game easily. Sets up a showdown With Stephenville or Kennedale (though I'm betting it's Stephenville). Any thoughts as to where and when this game would be played?

Did Andrews go thru some games during their season without a key player, or have they just finally gelled toward the end of the season to make the playoffs? I think DCTF had them as one of the playoff teams out of their district from the git-go.

They had a returning starter at QB this year that had a season ending injury of some kind early in the season. They have been playing a Sophomore that has come through for them in some clutch situations to get them into the playoffs. Their last district game against Seminole was a must win to get in for both teams, and Andrews was down 27-0 at one point, and this Soph threw for 4 and ran for 2 to come back and win the game.

BULLDOGS STELLAR PASS DEFENSE SET FOR CLASH WITH ANDREWS AIR ATTACK

By Daniel Youngblood
Published Tuesday, November 20, 2012
Over the past two weeks, Andrews quarterback Jase Hammack has passed for 627 yards and eight touchdowns in season-extending wins over Seminole (49-33) and Borger (49-28). For the 6-foot-2 sophomore to match that production this week, he'd need to exploit the Wylie defense in a way no quarterback has all season.

Fueled by a strong pass rush and a ball-hawking secondary, the Bulldogs have defended the pass as well as any team in the state, surrendering just 908 yards through the air in 11 consecutive wins. Entering its regional-round matchup against Andrews at 7:30 p.m. Friday at San Angelo, the Wylie defense will look to continue that trend against a Mustangs offense that's bound and determined to test it.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 in the state, have passed all such tests to date, holding all 11 of their opponents under 150 passing yards and all but three to 92 or fewer. Should Wylie do the same to Andrews (7-4) this week, it could find itself back in the Region I-3A finals for the first time since 2009.

Senior safety Patrick Walker, who leads the team with five interceptions, believes the Bulldogs are up to that task. And he and his teammates are looking forward to the opportunity to prove it.

"We think we have a fast secondary back there, and that's something we can use to our advantage," he said. "So when we see a team that can throw the football, it doesn't really intimidate us.

"I think we take pride in being one of the best defenses in the state and limiting some of the best teams under 100 yards in offense. That's kind of a big deal for us to just keep doing that week after week."

Not only has Wylie limited opponents' production, holding its opposition to 201 total yards per game, the Bulldogs have also shown a propensity to take the football away through forced turnovers.

That's especially true in the passing game, where Wylie has snatched 18 interceptions in 194 pass attempts, while allowing just six touchdown tosses. The Bulldogs also have broken up 31 passes, having a direct impact on 49 of the 102 incomplete passes their opponents have thrown.

Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer said that's just a tribute to his players for putting themselves in position to make plays. And it's something his team has worked to improve upon over the course of the season.

"I think they've gotten better as the year's gone on at going after the football," he said. "I think as the year goes on, their confidence level goes up, and as they study film and study opponents, they start picking up on some things where they can go at the football a little bit better.

"When we have a good rush and they know the ball's coming out quick, they can go make plays, and I think that's led to some of those interceptions."

Wylie's pass rush has been a key — and often overlooked — factor in its dominance against the pass. Despite rushing three most plays, the Bulldogs have come up with 23 sacks and 78 quarterback hurries, affecting nearly half of their opponents' 217 dropbacks.

That's allowed the eight players in coverage — or fewer on blitzes — to make so many plays on the ball.

Senior defensive end Jonathon Bott, responsible for eight of those sacks and 15 hurried passes, said no one segment deserves the credit for Wylie's defensive success. It's a product, instead, of everyone's collective effort.

"We've done a great job on both sides," Bott said. "The pass rush in some games has stepped it up, and other games it will be the secondary stepping up. When we both get going, we're really hard to move the ball against. That's something we take a lot of pride in."

The Bulldogs also take pride in their consistency — both on defense, where they've stifled opponents, and on offense, where they've worn them down.

That's been a winning formula so far. And the Bulldogs — particularly those on the defensive side — don't plan on making any changes to it this week.

"Defense wins championships, so the whole defense has put it on us that if we can shut them down, our offense has the firepower to go score," Bott said. "We've had that mindset every down we've played. When we get those big stops, it just goes back to that little slogan, I guess."

No. 2 Wylie (11-0) vs. Andrews (7-4)

7:30 P.M. TODAYHSAN ANGELO STADIUM HKEAN 105.1 FMWhat's riding on the game: An opportunity to play in the Region I-3A final against the winner of No. 3 Stephenville (9-1) and Kennedale (9-2). Both teams are seeking their first trip to the third round of the playoffs since 2009. Wylie made it to the Class 3A Division I state championship game that year. Andrews lost to Wylie in the state semis.

Last week: Wylie scored the first 42 points in a 49-21 bi-district win over Clint Mountain View. Andrews overcame a one-point halftime deficit to beat Borger 49-28. This is the third meeting between the Bulldogs and Mustangs in the playoffs since 2007. Wylie beat Andrews 28-14 in the 2007 state quarterfinals and won a 42-0 decision in a 2009 regional-round matchup.

Scouting Andrews: The Mustangs, who finished third in District 2-3A, have won their past two games — coming from behind in both to earn season-extending wins. Andrews overcame a four-score deficit to beat Seminole 49-33 in its regular-season finale and scored 22-unanswered points in its win over Borger. Sophomore quarterback Jase Hammack, who replaced injured starter Shane Dolgener early in the season, has passed for more than 2,000 yards, including 627 and eight touchdowns in the his past two games. "They do a great job of spreading the field," Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer said. "They're kind of an up-tempo, no-huddle team. They snap it about 70-plus (times) every game. ... They're not afraid to throw it on any down."

Bulldogs update: With its 27-point win over Mountain View, Wylie is now outscoring its opponents by an average score of 39-15. The Bulldogs have defeated 10 of their 11 opponents by 18 points or more. Only Monahans, which is plays Shallowater (11-0) this week in a Class 3A DII area-round matchup, played Wylie closer, losing 20-17 on Oct. 19 in Abilene. Wylie, which is averaging 405.2 yards per game, is allowing 201 per contest, just 82.5 through the air.

What the Bulldogs need to do to win: Defend the pass as well as they have all year. Wylie has held opposing quarterbacks to a 47.4 completion percentage and has three times as many interceptions (18) as touchdown passes allowed (six). If they have similar success against Hammack and the Mustangs, Andrews will be hard-pressed to stay competitive for four quarters.

Daniel Youngblood's prediction: Wylie 42, Andrews 20.

GFN FOR IPADQV
NO. 2 WYLIE ROUTS MUSTANGS 56-0

By Joey D. Richards richardsj@reporternews.com 325-670-5213
Published Friday, November 23, 2012
SAN ANGELO — This was almost over before Andrews touched the ball.

Garrett Martin returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, and the defense forced turnovers on Andrews' first three possessions — all leading to scores — as the No. 2 Bulldogs blasted the Mustangs 56-0 in a Class 3A Division I area-round playoff game Friday at San Angelo Stadium.

Wylie had a 35-0 lead before Andrews even picked up a first down. In fact, the Mustangs didn't get a first down until Joey Prieto ripped off a 12-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the second quarter.

But the damage had been done.

"The kickoff return was big," Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer said. "We got off to a good start. I thought we played real fast. Understand, we made some things happen. But everything went wrong that could for them.

"But I was proud of the way our guys took advantage of it. Every time we got great field position, we went and scored. We got on them fast and got a chance to play a lot of guys the second half. It was a good win for us all around. It puts us in the round of

eight, the quarterfinals, you couldn't ask for any more than that."

Wylie (12-0) plays No. 3 Stephenville (10-1) at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Wichita Falls' Memorial Stadium for the Region I title and a berth in the state semifinals.

Stephenville beat Kennedale 56-24 Friday in Mineral Wells.

Martin, a senior tailback, got the Bulldogs off to the fast start with the kickoff return for a touchdown.

"You always want to start the game off fast," Martin said. "I think we did that. Great blocking up front sprung me open. It was awesome to start the game off like that."

Then on the Mustangs' first play from scrimmage, Patrick Walker picked off a Jase Hammack pass and returned it 3 yards to the Andrews' 41-yard line. That would lead to a 3-yard touchdown run by Martin.

"It was the first play of the game for them," Walker said. "We had just scored on the opening kickoff. I was just trying to get the momentum back for us even more than we already had."

The Mustangs got off one play on their next possession — and then fumbled the ball away.

Three plays later, Martin scored from 12 yards out.

"Garrett, with special teams play, returning the opening kickoff back, and then we pick off the next play, then a fumble on their third play, I think," quarterback Taylor Grant said. "They (defense) just gave us good field position, and we just had to finish it off and punch it in."

The gifts kept coming. On Andrews' fifth play from scrimmage, Sterling Bristow picked off Hammack and returned it 8 yards to the Andrews 7. Two plays later, Grant threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Robertson.

Just like that, Wylie had a 28-0 lead with 5:11 left in the first quarter.

Grant added a 1-yard touchdown run, just two plays after a 53-yard pass to Zerrie Mack, to close out the first quarter with a 35-0 lead.

The offense played well, but the defense made it easy.

"We got some nice plays from the defense," Sandifer said. "More importantly, with the picks, we got to play on a shorter field. We had worked very hard this week. We had a great week, and we're getting better every week. Preparation is the key."

The Bulldogs got a 29-yard touchdown run from Martin early in the second quarter, and Grant threw a pair of touchdown passes to Tye Calhoun for a 56-0 halftime lead.

The latter TD came after the Mustangs fumbled the ball away at the Wylie 22, and Martin ripped off a 53-yard run.

Martin finished with 138 yards rushing on 13 carries, and Grant completed 10 of 11 passes for 143 yards. Neither played in the second half.

"We played great," Grant said. "The offensive line dominated like it has all year. Defense always plays great, and they showed up big in a big game. I think they'll continue to do that in the playoffs."

Wylie finished with 481 total yards, including 338 rushing. The Bulldogs didn't attempt a pass in the second half, after rolling up 331 total yards in the first half.

Andrews finished with 198 total yards, including 98 passing by Hammack.
