I have waited long enough for some Big Blue Playoff games!! I hope it don't stop here but I do see this as a great game, both teams match up well. Both are similar in having balanced attack even though PI does favor the run, especially with the Bevy of the backfield the Tarpons have.

Lets Go Big Blue!!!

Regarding our crowds, they haven't been the same the past few years. HOPEFULLY now that this is going to be "Thanksgiving Football" there will be a larger crowd from Port Isabel. There will be a lot of Alumni coming in from around the state for sure. I know my sister wants to go (PI c/o 1982) and possibly one of my brothers.

Sinton football has been really clicking as of late. There are still some miss fires on defense, but still much improved for earlier in the season. Mainly, they seem to be making good adjustments. The other team may score first, but that one drive is all our boys need to make the needed stops. Of course, I think our boys will take this game too. Go Pirates! :cheerl:

My bet is the advance ticket will save you a couple of bucks and time at the ticket gate.

Kingsville is the closest thing to a "halfway point" with a halfway decent stadium that isn't in the valley, but isn't too close to Sinton.

I say Sinton wins a well played close game 26 to 21. But you have to remember that Port Isabel beat us there about 16 years ago 40 -20. Also the Pelican West Band at South Padre Island plays just across the bridge from PI. That increases the risk.

Also Root may even show up at that game.

We both beat Rio Hondo, but PI lost to Raymondville and we beat the crap out of them! Not that that means anything NOW!!!

Brownsville Veterans Memorial is a good size 5A and is currently in the 5A playoff. Being from McAllen, I have only seen PI once this year and from what I can see, PI is no wimp. PI team seems unpredictable except for the running game. As for using a schedule to determine a team ability to win is miss leading. I myself do not know who will win. No one expected PI to give the 5A & 4A problems this year, but they did. It also most seems that they play at the level of team playing them. As for a crowd I was shocked, did not see many people at their game with Lyford, and friends have told me that their fans have not been showing up. No matter what happens Friday Night, these kids have worked hard and earned the right to be seen as Friday Night Heros, both Port Isabel and Sintion. Both schools have made High School Football history at one point or another. While valley teams are always seen by teams upstate to be weaker that has been changing. Valley schools are going farther and farther into the playoffs. I just hope both schools have a great game and that no one is injured. These games bring out alot of great memories centered around the holidays, so with that Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Great first post! and Welcome McHi

Just wanted to bring out that I too was at the Lyford game, I felt there was a good size amout of PI fans especially in comparison to the Lyford fans, the point I wanted to bring out was that - Bobby Morrow Stadium is HUGE so it might have not seem that there wasn't that many fans there. I looked up and around me I saw quite a few people. Like TFINT, I too think due to the Holiday, we might see some of our out-of-town fans come out and support the Tarpons. :)

Thank you, It is a great time of the year with football playoff's filling the air in the Rio Grandy Valley. There will be some great match up this weekend. Port Isabel vs Sinton, Harlingen vs Sharyland and many others. I wish all the valley teams best of luck on their upcomming games. I have been hearing that Rain may come into the forcast for Friday Night games. Hope this does not create issues for teams, but when a football get wet is like holding on to a greased pig, and what is a football called? Answer is pigskin! So look out! Hope the Rain stays away, but they keep calling for a 50% chance of Rain Friday. It is nice to chat on this form you get so many different view point, some good and some not so good, but hey it is the holiday's so enjoy!

Living in McAllen, and not quite following PI makes it a little hard to size up this game. What I did find out is that PI has 5 running backs, most average about 7.3 to 8.1 yards per carry that in itself is scary! I have a friend in Mercedes that stated Mercedes (4A) gave Harlingen (5A) one heck of a scrimmage, and then Port Isabel (3A) came in and beat them in there scrimmage. He stated that the Mercedes players found Port Isabel difficult to grasp. Because of the running game Mercedes loaded up the box, and then Port Isabel passed on them, but they were not afraid to run either. PI speed is deceptive and the running backs are tricky and hard at times to get down. According to my friend Port Isabel is not a flashy or a flamboyant team. He stated that PI has had some trouble with Penalty. The defense can be beat, but you have to watch out for Port Isabel defense, they can at time put a big hit on players. He stated that their QB took some big shots from the Port Isabel defense end. According to my friend that this player is about 6’ 2 and around 230 or 235, and has deceptive speed and will at some point create issues in the backfield. I can vouch for that, I saw this player put several large hits on the Lyford QB, however this is after he ran out of the pocket to throw, and then he really got it. As for a crowd factor, PI crowd seemed small from other years when we caught them in the Playoff with Lyford, do not really no why. As of the quality of team Port Isabel has faced, has varied, Brownsville Vet which is a (5A) and currently in the playoffs did have problems with Port Isabel running game and passing game. Add the upcoming weather to the game, and just about anything could happen. Sinton is a class act team, and Port Isabel will need to be ready to go full speed in order to stay with Sinton, and Sinton should know better than to under estimate Port Isabel. Sound like a great game, but I will be able to go. So to all of you PI & Sinton fan’s enjoy this should be a great game depending on the weather.

Tarpons ready for Sinton

Armando Garza/Valley Morning Star

KINGSVILLE —....Having that belief and confidence is important as the Tarpons will have to be 100 percent on their game tonight when they face the 9-2 Sinton Pirates in a Class 3A Division II area round playoff game at Javelina Stadium.

Port Isabel (8-3) has played arguably its best ball over the past three weeks and they’ll face a stiff challenge in the 30-3A co-champ Pirates. The winner of tonight’s game advances to the regional round next week to face either Wharton or Navarro. A win would also mean PI’s first trip to the third round of the postseason since 2004.
.........

The Tarpons will have to contend with a well-rounded Sinton squad, which dispatched of Lytle 53-16 last week. Sinton is 2-0 against Valley schools this year, defeating Rio Hondo and Raymondville in non-district.

Pirate quarterback Tyler Handson has racked up 3,000 total yards (1,641 passing, 1,338 rushing) in Sinton’s 11 games and is the nucleus of the offense. He totaled 305 yards last week (226 rushing) and ran for four touchdowns in the big bi-district win.

“He’s a good one and we’ve gotta slow him down. Everything revolves around him,” Stumbaugh said of Handson. “He had a big game last week. But they’re more than just the quarterback. They’re a complete football team, so we’re preparing for everything.”

That would be wise, as tailback Keith Garcia (843 yards rushing) has been a key factor as well despite being in and out of the lineup with injuries. Garcia did not play last week and John Gabriel Guzman can step in with his 457 yards and five touchdowns rushing under his belt. Wideout Derek Shedd (700 yards, 13 TDs receiving) is the big-play target in the passing game and is a threat to go the distance on special teams as well.

.......

Since last year’s stinging loss to Orange Grove in bi-district, this year’s Big Blue team has been on a mission and Stumbaugh said they’ve got the stuff to keep it going.

“That’s been all we’ve talked about since last year’s loss,” he said. “Those are the feelings you remember if you care about the game. The thing about these kids is that they fear nobody and respect everybody. They’re not going into this game intimidated.”

Difference might be if the Pirates can stop the PI passing TD's. You can't cheat in this round of the playoffs. Sinton Pirates will have to play "lights out" to beat PI now! You know your Tarpons will run out the clock if they can.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention PI's running game wears down defenses, as there is always fresh legs in the game. And going to the passing game also helped PI do that even more. Good game plan by PI coaching :-)

Great game by Port isabel! Sinton's weakness all year has been the defense and it got donkey stomped tonight!no chance in Sinton stopping that offense. PI would kill themsevles with penalties and wouldn't matter as they would just break one for big yardage to get all back.

Sinton needs to address that next season, last year defense was bend but dont break and this season every game the defense would get run on and pass on for big yardage and the offense would save them by scoring alot of points. Really hope they stress defense next season otherwise well be in the same boat of trying to play a shoot out.

This sounded like a great game, would love to have seen it. I knew the weather was going to be an issue, just was not sure how much of a roll it would play. It is clear that Sinton has a very good team and a very outstanding QB with some very good receivers. Like I said in an earlier post, I do not like using strength of schedules as a rule. I had read how tough Port Isabel played Brownsville Vet a (5A School), and the Brownsville Vet coach stated it was tough getting PI running game slow down. His comment was it is bad enough to attempt to stop 1 or 2 back, but 5 will wear down your defense especially when they average over 7 to 8 yards a carry. I have to admit no team fumble a single ball the entire game! That is just flat amazing considering how foul weather was. While I know how tough a loss for Sinton and their fans must be believe me when I say I know Sinton will bounce back. While I live in McAllen and support McAllen Teams my hat is off to the Port Isabel Tarpons. I know that the media has down played Port Isabel and has backed teams like La Feria and Rio Hondo over Port Isabel to such a point that I believe it helped this PI team just play that much harder to prove them wrong( the media). From a McAllen Bulldog fan to Port Isabel team and their fans, congratulation on a well-played and well-earned game. Port Isabel you truly have earned it, now on to the next round.

But I guess that's how it goes, on to the next game.

Yeah Shedd never came off the field and was basicly in a track meet the entire game. Can only imagine what he could have done on offense if he only played one way. We will really miss Shedd on kickoff and punt returns, I have not seen anyone that dangerous and quick since Marky! Not sure who will fill that slot next year. Nick will be back so that will help.

Shedd will definitely be missed. :( He was so much fun to watch these past few years & I wish him all the best. Love that kid!

Going forward these underclassman have to decide how they want to be remembered. We need to take a hard look in the mirror and change some things. We do have some talent coming up through the ranks, but if you don't fully COMMIT 100% of yourself to the team and program you aren't gonna win very many games. It begins Monday. Get your mind right!
